bhimashankar Temple

Bhimashankar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located in the Sahyadri Hills of Pune district, Maharashtra. Surrounded by dense forests and serene hills, the temple is not just a major pilgrimage center but also a natural and wildlife-rich destination.

“सह्याद्रि की घाटियों में गूंजता है — हर हर महादेव, क्योंकि वहाँ विराजते हैं स्वयं भीमाशंकर शिव।”

― bhimashankar Temple

The temple is especially revered for its tranquil spiritual atmosphere and natural beauty.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to be built during the 13th century, with later additions by Nana Phadnavis in the 18th century.
According to Shiva Purana, the demon Bhim, son of Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana), terrorized the region. To protect his devotees, Lord Shiva appeared and defeated Bhim, thus the name Bhimashankar.
It is said that after killing Bhim, Shiva manifested in the form of a Jyotirlinga, making it one of the twelve sacred abodes of Shiva.
The temple area was also influenced by Maratha rulers and saints, contributing to its religious and cultural heritage.

Significance of the Temple

Sixth Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas mentioned in the Shiva Purana.
Worshiping at Bhimashankar is believed to remove all sins and grant liberation (moksha).
The source of the River Bhima, which merges into Krishna River, originates here.
It is also located inside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, making it a mix of spirituality and nature.
The temple is a starting point for many Shiva devotees during the month of Shravan and during Mahashivratri.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the Nagara style of architecture, the temple showcases ancient stone carvings and sculpted pillars.

The Jyotirlinga here is placed in the Garbhagriha (sanctum), and devotees can have close darshan.

The temple is constructed from black basalt rock and retains a rustic, sacred charm.

A large bell, installed by Chimaji Appa after defeating the Portuguese in Vasai, is present in the temple courtyard.

The temple complex is surrounded by thick forests and waterfalls, especially during monsoon.
