Paschimesvara Shiva Temple

The Paschimesvara Shiva Temple, nestled in the Old Town area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Dating back to the 8th century CE and attributed to the Bhaumakara period, it stands as a testament to the city’s deep-rooted temple culture.

“जहाँ पश्चिम की ओर मुड़कर भी शिव पूर्ववत कृपालु हैं – वह है पश्चिमेश्वर का धाम।”

― Paschimesvara Shiva Temple

It is situated on the south-western embankment of Bindusagar Lake, earning it the name “Paschimesvara” (“the lord of the west”), thanks to its westward orientation—a rarity among Hindu shrines.

Mythological Significance & History

Constructed during the Bhaumakara dynasty, likely in the 8th century, it aligns with Bhubaneswar’s development as a temple-dense region. Although partially ruined now, the temple remains active, with the sacred Shiva Linga still venerated amid the fallen structure.

Significance of the Temple

Despite its dilapidated state, Paschimesvara continues as a living place of worship. Locals affectionately refer to it as “Big Shiva”.
The temple plays an active role during major Shaivite festivals, such as Mahashivaratri and Makar Sankranti, drawing devotees to its sacred precincts.

Architecture of the Temple

The original superstructure has collapsed, but plinths, idol fragments, and the sanctum (linga) still survive amid fallen stones.

Notable are the detached sculptures of Kartikeya, Ganesha, Parvati, and Narasimha, which offer valuable clues about its artistic heritage.

Built from sandstone and laterite using dry masonry techniques, the temple reflects the early Kalinga architectural style through its plan and remnants.
