Patalesvara Shiva Temple

The Yadadri Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, also known as Yadagirigutta Temple, is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Located in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, the temple is perched atop a hillock and attracts lakhs of devotees every year.

“जहाँ पाताल में भी शिव बसते हैं, वहाँ अंधकार नहीं, दिव्यता होती है।”

― Patalesvara Shiva Temple

It is considered one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in South India and is managed by the Telangana State Government.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was constructed during the 13th century CE in the Ganga dynasty period.
It may also reflect architectural roots extending to the 6th–7th centuries, potentially linked to the earlier Sailodbhava dynasty

Significance of the Temple

A Svayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Linga is enshrined deep within a circular yonipitha, emphasizing divine mystery and sanctity.
Known as one of the Asta‑Sambhus, it serves as one of the eight guardian shrines of the Purusottama Kshetra (Puri) region, highlighting its historical and spiritual importance.
Several 13th-century inscriptions around the entrance record generous offerings—milk, curd, rice, clarified butter, flowers—made under King Anangabhima Deva III’s reign

Architecture of the Temple

Only the gandi (tower body) and mastaka (crown) of the vimana are visible above ground—approximately 3.0 m and 0.7 m tall, respectively. The base (bada) is submerged below ground.

Designed in a pancharatha plan, the temple features classic Kalinga elements: bada, gandi, mastaka, and plain mingled with modest ornamentation.

The doorjambs are exquisitely carved, with three vertical decorative bands (puspa, lata, patra sakha), Saivite dvarapalas, Gajalakshmi at the lalatabimba, navagrahas on the lintel, and a later‑added Nataraja in the gandi.

The subterranean placement and descending stairway emphasize the “netherworld” feel, beautifully aligning with the temple’s name.
