Keesaragutta Temple

The Keesaragutta Temple, also known as the Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple, is an ancient Dravidian-style Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva (installed as a Swayambhu Linga) along with deities like Goddess Bhavani, Sivadurga, Lord Rama (with Sita), and Lakshmi Narasimha.

“जहाँ श्रीराम ने शिव को नमन किया, वहाँ कीसारगुट्टा तीर्थ बन गया।”

― Keesaragutta Temple

Situated on a small hillock in Keesara Village, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, Telangana—around 35–40 km from Hyderabad—the temple is a notable pilgrimage destination.

Mythological Significance & History

Legend recounts that after Lord Rama defeated Ravana, he sought to atone for the sin of killing a Brahmin. He asked Hanuman to bring a Shiva Linga from Varanasi, but as the auspicious moment approached, Lord Shiva Himself appeared and gave a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Linga, subsequently installed by Rama and known as Ramalingeswara. When Hanuman returned with 101 Lingas, disappointed, he scattered them across the hill; these are still worshipped around the temple. Rama named the place Kesari Giri (Hanuman’s father’s hill), which over time became Keesaragutta.

Significance of the Temple

The temple draws thousands of devotees during Maha Shivaratri, Karthika Masam, Sri Rama Navami, and Hanuman Jayanti, featuring Brahmotsavam, Vedic chants, processions, and night-long vigils.

The hilltop location and the scattered 101 Lingas make it a powerful site of Shaivism, Ram Bhakti, and Hanuman devotion.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in Dravidian style, with a prominent gopuram (towered entrance), the temple architecture is distinctive.

Surrounding excavations have revealed Chalukyan-era ruins, including brick structures, Shiva Lingas, forts, Yagasala, prayer halls, and even remnants of Jain and Buddhist presence, along with one of the earliest Telugu inscriptions (5th century CE) discovered on a rock-cut cave at the site.
