Kalighat Kali Temple

The Kalighat Kali Temple, located in southern Kolkata on the banks of Adi Ganga, is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India.

“जहाँ काली माँ का वास होता है, वहाँ अंधकार भी उजाले में बदल जाता है – यही है कालीघाट की महिमा।”

― Kalighat Kali Temple

It houses the fierce yet compassionate Goddess Kali, worshipped in the Kali-kula (tantric) tradition. Devotees flock from across the world to seek her blessings and maternal protection.

Mythological Significance & History

According to legend, during Lord Shiva’s destructive Tandava, Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra dismembered Goddess Sati’s body, and her right toe is believed to have fallen at Kalighat, making it a sacred spot.
The temple is referenced as early as the 15th century in local compositions, with the current structure built between 1798 and 1809 by the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family.
In 1835, the Nat Mandir was added, and later, additional shrines such as ShyamRai were built, enriching the temple complex.

Significance of the Temple

As a powerful Shakti Peetha, the temple is visited for protection, spiritual upliftment, salvation, and emotional solace.
It remains particularly significant during major festivals like Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Navratri, Poila Boishakh, Snana Yatra, and festivals marked by new beginnings or lunar phases.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in classic Bengal Ath‑chala (eight-sloped) style, the main temple features curved roofs and a truncated dome. Multiple spires crown the structure, richly decorated with terracotta motifs depicting deities and nature.

The central sanctum houses a 3‑ft black stone idol of Kali with three eyes, a golden tongue, and four hands holding symbolic implements. Flanked by Shrines for Shiva and Radha-Krishna, and complemented by a spacious Nat Mandir.

The temple courtyard opens onto a sacred tank (Kundupukur), used for ritual dips and pilgrimage rites.
