Kaal Bhairava Temple

Kaal Bhairava Temple is one of the most famous temples in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairava, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. The temple is especially revered because of the unique ritual of offering liquor to the deity as a part of worship.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s origins are traced back to the Paramara dynasty (8th – 13th century CE).
References to Kaal Bhairava worship are found in ancient texts like the Avanti Khanda of Skanda Purana.
King Bhadresen, a Paramara ruler, is believed to have built the original temple.
Over centuries, the temple has remained an important pilgrimage site and is closely associated with the Aghora sect, who consider Bhairava as their principal deity.

Significance of the Temple

Liquor offering (Madira Prasad): Devotees offer alcohol to the deity, which is believed to vanish mysteriously when poured into the mouth of the idol.
Spiritual Protection: Kaal Bhairava is regarded as the guardian of the city of Ujjain, ensuring safety and warding off evil forces.
Astrological Importance: Devotees worship Kaal Bhairava to reduce the malefic effects of Shani (Saturn) and Rahu-Ketu.
Connection to Mahakaleshwar: The temple is part of the spiritual circuit of Ujjain, along with the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in Maratha style of architecture, the temple has an imposing entrance.

The sanctum houses the idol of Lord Kaal Bhairava, adorned with garlands and smeared with sindoor (vermilion).

The temple walls are decorated with paintings of Bhairava manifestations and tantric symbols.

The structure reflects the simplicity yet spiritual intensity associated with Bhairava worship.

By Air: The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore (55 km).

By Train: Ujjain Junction is well connected to major Indian cities.

By Road: Ujjain has good road connectivity with Indore, Bhopal, and other cities of Madhya Pradesh. Local buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws are easily available to reach the temple.
