Mythological Significance & History

The Chaturdasha Temple (Temple of the Fourteen Deities) is located in Old Agartala, Tripura, India. It was built in 1760–1761 CE by King Krishna Manikya, the first ruler to establish his capital in Agartala.

Legend recounts that the temple houses the heads of fourteen tribal deities known collectively as the Chaturdasa Devata, worshipped by the Tripura royal lineage. Originally, these idols were in Udaipur but were moved to Agartala when the capital shifted

Significance of the Temple

The temple honors the Chaturdasa Devata, gods whose worship dates back to the Mahabharata-era and was preserved by the Manikya dynasty as their familial and regional pantheon.

It plays a central role in the state’s renowned Kharchi Puja, a week-long purification and thanksgiving festival held in July, when devotees gather and the temple idols are publicly displayed

Architecture of the Temple

The structure features a Tripuri-style dome inspired by traditional village huts, topped with a stupa-like element that reveals Buddhist influences.

The temple includes a Nat Mandapa (prayer hall) and Garbhagriha (sanctum). Inside are only the upper halves of the deities’ idols — tribal-style head carvings—and one Shiva head is crafted from silver.
