― Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple

It is believed to be the very place where Lord Shiva appeared before Arjuna in the guise of a Kirata (hunter) during the Mahabharata era.

Mythological Significance & History

According to legend, during the Mahabharata period, Arjuna performed intense penance at this site to please Lord Shiva and obtain the Pashupatastra, a divine weapon.
Lord Shiva, disguised as a Kirata (tribal hunter), tested Arjuna’s devotion and valor before granting him the boon.
The temple was later established to honor this divine encounter and has since been a prominent pilgrimage site for Shaivites.
Over the centuries, the temple has been renovated and maintained by devotees and local communities.

Significance of the Temple

Considered a wish-fulfilling shrine, devotees believe that sincere prayers here are always answered.
The temple is sacred to both Hindus and the indigenous Kirati tribes, symbolizing cultural unity.
It is one of the oldest and most respected Shiva temples in Sikkim, attracting pilgrims during Mahashivratri and Bala Chaturdashi.
The site is also important for meditation and spiritual practices due to its tranquil surroundings.

By Road: Located 11 km from Gangtok, accessible via taxis or private vehicles. The drive offers scenic mountain views.

By Air: The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport (approx. 33 km). Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal (approx. 126 km) is the main hub for flights from major Indian cities.

By Train: The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal, about 120 km from Gangtok. Taxis and shared cabs are available from there.
