Shantadurga Kalangutkarin Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga, the peaceful form of Durga Devi, located in Nanora village, in North Goa. The goddess is worshipped here as the Kuldevi (family deity) of the Kalangutkar (or Calangute) Gaud Saraswat Brahmin families, hence the name Kalangutkarin.

The temple is known for its divine serenity, cultural heritage, and unique Goan temple architecture, and is one of the significant temples in Goa’s spiritual circuit. Shantadurga is believed to be the divine mediator who pacified a fierce battle between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Mythological Significance & History

The original shrine is believed to be centuries old, with roots going back to the pre-Portuguese era. During the Portuguese rule, many Hindu temples were relocated to avoid destruction. The current structure of Shantadurga Kalangutkarin Temple was rebuilt and renovated multiple times over the centuries by the local Brahmin community, preserving both religious devotion and cultural traditions.
The Kalangutkars (residents of Calangute) particularly revere this temple, even if they have settled elsewhere, and often return for family rituals and annual festivals.

Significance of the Temple

Goddess Shantadurga is considered the embodiment of peace, power, and protection.
The temple is the Kuladevata (family deity) of many families from Calangute and Bardez region, who still maintain strong ties to the temple.
Devotees believe that praying here removes obstacles, ensures family welfare, and brings spiritual calm.
Annual Zatra (temple festival) and Navratri are celebrated with grandeur, drawing thousands of devotees.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple structure showcases a blend of modern and traditional North Indian styles, with a large Shiva Lingam as the central deity.

The temple has a tall shikhar (spire), beautifully sculpted pillars, and serene surroundings.

A museum and martyrs’ gallery are also part of the complex, displaying artifacts from the 1857 rebellion.

The temple premises include Dhuni (sacred fire) and accommodations for visiting sadhus and pilgrims..
