Shrinathji Temple

Shrinathji Temple

Shrinathji Haveli, is located in the town of Nathdwara, about 48 km north of Udaipur, Rajasthan.

“नाथद्वारा के श्रीनाथजी केवल देवता नहीं, वे हर भक्त के नंदलाल हैं।”

― Shrinathji Temple

It houses the Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Krishna in his childhood form, Shrinathji, making it a major pilgrimage site in the Vaishnav tradition.

Mythological Significance & History

In the late 17th century, to protect the idol of child Krishna from Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, Vallabhacharya’s followers moved it from Mathura. When the cart reached the present location at Nathdwara, its wheels sank into mud—believed to be Lord’s will. The temple was built there and the deity has remained ever since.

The temple’s construction was led by Goswami Damodar Das Bairagi, with royal patronage from the Maharana of Mewar around 1672.

Significance of the Temple

Shrinathji Temple is the focal point of the Pushtimarg sect, founded by Vallabhacharya. Devotees believe that worship here brings divine grace, material abundance, spiritual protection, and inner peace.

Architecture of the Temple

Designed as a royal mansion (haveli) rather than a conventional temple, the structure reflects Rajputana style, richly decorated with frescoes, pillars, and balconies.

The main sanctum houses a black marble idol of seven-year-old Krishna, with His left arm raised to lift Govardhan Hill. A courtyard and pillared halls surround the inner shrine
