Radhavallabh Temple

Radhavallabh Temple

The Shri Radhavallabh Temple is one of the oldest, most revered temples in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to Radha Rani and Lord Krishna. Unlike other temples where Lord Krishna is the central deity, Radha Rani is worshipped here as the Supreme, and Krishna as Her consort, known as Radhavallabh (the beloved of Radha).

राधावल्लभाय नमः॥
Radha Vallabhaya Namah
(Salutations to the Beloved of Radha)
श्रीराधे राधे – Continuous chanting by devotees fills the temple with divine vibrations.

― Radhavallabh Temple

This temple represents the Radha-Vallabha Sampradaya, a spiritual tradition that emphasizes the divine supremacy of Radha ji. It is a powerful center of devotion and bhakti, especially among followers of the Nimbarka and Radhavallabha sects.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was established in the 16th century by Goswami Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu, the founder of the Radhavallabh Sampradaya.
The main deity of Radhavallabh ji (Lord Krishna) is believed to have self-manifested and was handed over to Hit Harivansh Ji by divine intervention.
Originally installed in Vrindavan, the deity was moved to a secret location during the Mughal invasions and later reinstalled in the current temple around late 1600s.
The present-day temple structure was built by Sundardas Bhatnagar, a wealthy devotee from Rajasthan, in 1585 AD.

Significance of the Temple

This temple uniquely places Radha above Krishna, showing Her divinity and supreme status in the spiritual world.
It is considered one of the Saptadevalayas (seven major temples) of Vrindavan.
The deity of Radhavallabh ji is incredibly divine and expressive, carved from shyam-colored black stone, while Radha ji is represented symbolically by a crown and flower seat, signifying her nirguna (formless) presence.
Devotees believe that mere darshan of Radhavallabh awakens pure bhakti in the heart.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in typical North Indian (Rajasthani-style) architecture using red sandstone.

The structure is massive and majestic, resembling Mughal-era architecture with arched gateways, fluted domes, and rich carvings.

Unlike other temples in Vrindavan, the Radhavallabh temple has no outer deity chamber, placing the darshan hall and the sanctum on the same level—symbolizing accessibility of divine love to all.

Inside, the temple is serene and filled with chanting, bhajans, and the sound of mridang and kartal during aarti. and peepal trees add to the serene devotional environment…
