― Chandi Devi Temple

It is a popular pilgrimage site and a spiritually significant destination for devotees visiting Haridwar.

Mythological Significance & History

The main idol of Goddess Chandi Devi was installed in the 8th century by the great Hindu philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya. However, the temple structure as seen today was constructed in 1929 by the King of Kashmir, Suchat Singh. The temple is closely associated with mythology, especially the legend of Goddess Chandi slaying the demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is considered a Siddh Peetha, where wishes are believed to be fulfilled.
It is believed that Goddess Chandi rested at this spot after killing the demons, and hence, the hill is considered highly sacred.
It is also one of the Panch Tirth (Five Pilgrimages) within Haridwar.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in traditional North Indian (Nagari) temple architecture.

Located on top of a hill, the temple offers panoramic views of Haridwar city and the Ganges River.

The sanctum sanctorum houses a striking black stone idol of Goddess Chandi.

The temple is relatively simple in structure, focusing more on spiritual ambiance than elaborate decoration.
