Julfa Mata Temple

Julfa Mata Temple

Julfa Mata Temple is a revered Shakti Peetha situated atop the Shivalik foothills along the Nangal–Hambewal road, around 5 km from Nangal town, in Rupnagar (Ropar) district, Punjab.

“ज्वाला माता की अखंड ज्योति, हर भक्त के मन में श्रद्धा की लौ जलाती है।”

― Julfa Mata Temple

The word “Julfa” means hair, signifying that it is believed to be the sacred site where Sati’s hair fell when Lord Vishnu dismembered her body, marking one of the 51 Shakti Peethas

History of the Temple

Ancient legend states that demons harassed the gods, who combined their power in a divine flame, giving birth to Adishakti (Sati). After her self‑immolation, Shiva’s grief led to Vishnu’s Chakra severing her body—her hair (julfa) is said to have fallen at this sacred spot, giving rise to Julfa Mata Temple.

This makes the temple one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas, highly significant in the lore of Goddess worship in Hindu tradition.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple, perched on a local hill, features traditional North‑Indian temple architecture, built from local stone and designed to reflect its ancient heritage.

At the entrance is a Shiva temple (to the right), and the Peepal tree stands nearby, adding spiritual ambiance.

The main shrine houses the idol of Goddess Julfa Mata (Sakti), and devotees offer sweets (suji halwa, laddus, barfi), coconut, flowers, and kheer or kheel (sugar‑coated puffed rice) as part of worship

Religious Significance

Devotees believe Julfa Mata fulfills heartfelt wishes, making it a Manokamna Siddha Peeth.

A Peepal tree at the entrance is used to tie moli threads by devotees, symbolizing prayer and desire expression—threads believed to carry wishes to the divine

Festivals like Navratri and Sawan draw large crowds with elaborate lighting, pujas, and ceremonial offerings.
