Shri Vimla Devi Shaktipeeth Temple

Shri Vimla Devi Shaktipeeth Temple

Shri Vimla Devi Shaktipeeth Temple is one of the most sacred and ancient Shaktipeethas located in the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri, Odisha. It is not just a Shaktipeeth but also one of the Tantric peethas, where Goddess Vimla is worshipped as the presiding goddess of the sacred land of Puri.

“या देवी सर्वभूतेषु विमला रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Vimala Rupena Samsthita,
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah.

― Shri Vimla Devi Temple

Here, it is believed that the navel (nābhi) of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva carried her body after her self-immolation in the Daksha Yajna.

History of the Temple

The temple of Vimla Devi predates even the famed Jagannath Temple, and she is regarded as the Adi Shakti (original energy) of the Puri region. Some historians suggest that this site was a powerful Tantric seat in the ancient times and was later incorporated into the Jagannath tradition during the 10th–12th century CE.
The temple’s mention appears in several Tantric scriptures, including the Tantrachudamani and Kalika Purana, describing its location and spiritual significance. The worship of Vimla Devi continues alongside that of Lord Jagannath, and no offering (bhog) made to Lord Jagannath is considered complete until it is first offered to Goddess Vimla.
