Shri Dakshina Kali Devi Shaktipeeth Temple

Shri Dakshina Kali Devi Shaktipeeth Temple is one of the 51 revered Shaktipeethas, located in Kalighat, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is one of the most powerful and prominent centers of Shakti worship in India. The temple is dedicated to Dakshina Kali, a fierce form of Goddess Parvati, and marks the sacred spot where the right toe of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen.

“ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः॥
Om Krim Kalikayai Namah
(A bija mantra invoking the fierce energy of Kali for protection)

― Shri Dakshina Kali Devi Temple

This temple is not just a Shaktipeeth but also one of the four main Kali temples in India (alongside Kamakhya, Tarapith, and Dakshineswar), making it a vital center of Tantric Shaktism and Hindu pilgrimage.

History of the Temple

The legend of this Shaktipeeth is rooted in the Daksha Yagna episode from the Shiva Purana. After Goddess Sati immolated herself at her father Daksha’s yagna, Lord Shiva carried her body in sorrow. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshan Chakra to dismember her corpse, and her right toe is said to have fallen at this very location — Kalighat.
Though the current temple structure was constructed around the 16th century, the worship at this site is believed to date back to prehistoric times. The name “Kolkata” itself is believed by many to have been derived from “Kalighat”.

Significance of the Temple

The goddess is worshipped here in her Dakshina Kali form – dark, powerful, and fierce yet compassionate to her devotees.
This temple is particularly known for fulfilling urgent desires, removing black magic, and offering protection.
It is a major center for Tantric practices, especially during Amavasya (new moon) and Navratri.
The deity accepts offerings with raw devotion, not ritual perfection — a rare aspect of Shakti worship.

Architecture of the Temple

The present temple is built in Bengal architecture with a three-eyed image of Kali with her tongue out and four arms holding a sword, a severed head, and showing blessing mudras.

A unique feature is the silver crown and gold tongue of the goddess.

The sanctum contains a black stone idol, and the temple complex has shrines for Lord Shiva (Nakuleshwar Bhairava), Radha-Krishna, and other deities.
