Umananda Temple

The name Umananda is derived from “Uma” (Goddess Parvati) and “Ananda” (happiness), symbolizing the place where Lord Shiva resides happily with Goddess Parvati.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s history dates back to the 17th century, when it was built by the Ahom King Gadadhar Singha (1681–1696). According to legend, this island was created when Lord Shiva burned Kamadeva (the God of Love) to ashes with his third eye, hence the place is also called Bhasmachal (the hill of ashes).
The temple was damaged by an earthquake in 1897 but later rebuilt by a local wealthy merchant. Today, it remains a significant pilgrimage site as well as a popular tourist attraction in Guwahati.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is considered highly sacred for Shaivites (devotees of Lord Shiva).
It is believed that worshipping at this temple brings peace, prosperity, and liberation from sins.
The temple holds special importance during Maha Shivaratri, when thousands of devotees throng the island to offer prayers.
The location of the temple on an island makes it one of the most unique shrines in India.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows traditional Assamese style architecture, made primarily of stone.

The sanctum houses a Shiva Linga, the main object of worship, adorned with offerings and flowers.

The outer walls are decorated with rock-cut carvings and sculptures of Hindu deities such as Surya, Ganesha, and Vishnu.

How to Reach to Temple

By Ferry/Boat: The only way to reach the temple is by ferry or motorboat from Umananda Ghat or Kachari Ghat in Guwahati. The ferry ride takes about 10–15 minutes.

By Road: Guwahati city is well connected by road. From the city center, one can easily reach the ghat to take a boat ride.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station, about 4 km from the ferry point.

By Air: The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, around 25 km away..
