Ugra Tara Temple

Ugra Tara Temple is one of the most important Shakti shrines in Assam, located in the heart of Guwahati city on the western side of Jorpukhuri Tank. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara, a fearsome form of Shakti who is considered one of the ten Mahavidyas of Tantra.

Unlike many other temples, the sanctum here does not house an idol, but instead a small pit of water, which is regarded as the manifestation of Goddess Ugra Tara.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built in the 18th century (1725 CE) by the Ahom King Siva Singha. His queen, Phuleswari, was a great devotee of Goddess Tara and played a key role in establishing the shrine.
Mythologically, the temple is believed to be a Shakti Peetha, where the navel of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva roamed with her body. This makes Ugra Tara Temple one of the holiest centers of Shakti worship in India.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is considered a sacred site for Tantric practices and Shakti worship.
Devotees believe that worshipping here brings strength, fulfillment of desires, and spiritual awakening.
The temple is especially significant during Navratri and Ambubachi Mela, when thousands of devotees gather for rituals.
Unlike other temples, the sanctum pit of water is worshipped as the living form of Goddess Tara.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows traditional Assamese temple architecture with a dome-like structure and shikhara (spire).

The sanctum does not have an idol; instead, a water-filled natural pit is worshipped as the goddess.

The outer walls are decorated with simple carvings and motifs.

The temple premises include a pond called Jorpukhuri, which adds to the serene surroundings. and natural surroundings make it both spiritually and aesthetically significan

By Road: The temple is located in the Lotaxil area of Guwahati, about 3 km from Guwahati Railway Station. Local buses, autos, and taxis are easily available.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station (around 3 km away).

By Air: The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, about 24 km from the temple.
