Tarapith Temple

The Tarapith Temple is one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in India, located in Birbhum district of West Bengal. It is dedicated to Goddess Tara, a fierce and compassionate form of Goddess Kali.

“माँ तारा के चरणों में अर्पित एक आँसू भी जीवन की सारी पीड़ा हर सकता है।”

― Tarapith Temple

Tarapith is not just a temple, but a powerful Tantric pilgrimage center, attracting sadhus, devotees, and spiritual seekers from all over India.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old, though the current structure was rebuilt in the 18th century by a local ruler named Jagannath Ray. According to Hindu mythology, it is the site where the third eye of Sati fell when her body was dismembered by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra.
Tarapith is also closely associated with the legendary Tantric saint Bamakhepa, who lived near the temple and is considered a great devotee of Maa Tara. His samadhi is located just behind the temple and is revered by all visitors.

Significance of the Temple

It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where Sati’s body parts fell—in this case, her third eye.
Tarapith is a powerful Tantric sadhana site, especially for those who worship Goddess in her fierce forms like Kali or Tara.
The temple is associated with miracles and divine visions, especially during Amavasya (new moon) nights.
Bamakhepa, the “mad saint”, is worshipped alongside the goddess for his unconditional devotion and supernatural powers.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple features Bengali-style terracotta architecture, with a curved roof (chala) and detailed carvings.

The main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses a black stone idol of Goddess Tara, depicted in a fearsome form with Lord Shiva’s corpse lying on her lap.

The inner sanctum is covered with silver and gold, and the temple walls depict various scenes from Hindu mythology.

Near the temple lies the cremation ground (maha smashan)—a spiritually potent place believed to be blessed by Maa Tara herself.
