Shri Phullara Devi Shaktipeeth Temple

Shri Phullara Devi Shaktipeeth is one of the sacred 51 Shaktipeethas in Hinduism, each representing a place where a part of Goddess Sati’s body fell. This temple is located in Attahas village, near Labhpur in Birbhum district, West Bengal.

“ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः॥
Om Hreem Shreem Dum Durgayai Namah
(A powerful mantra to invoke the goddess’s protection and strength)

― Shri Phullara Devi Temple

According to belief, it is at this site that the lower lip (adhara or “hansi”) of Goddess Sati fell. The presiding deity is worshipped as Phullara Devi, and Bhairava (Shiva’s form) here is called Vishwesh or Vishweshwar.

The name “Attahas” literally means “loud laughter,” and the place is charged with divine feminine energy, symbolizing the joyful and fierce aspects of Devi.

History of the Temple

The temple’s roots go back to the legend of Daksha Yagna. When Goddess Sati immolated herself after her father insulted Lord Shiva, the enraged and grief-stricken Shiva wandered the universe carrying her body. As Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember her body to stop the cosmic chaos, her body parts fell at different spots on Earth, which became Shaktipeethas.
Here, the lower lip of Sati fell, sanctifying the site as Phullara Shaktipeeth. The temple and surrounding area have been a spiritual destination for saints, pilgrims, and scholars for centuries.
This site is also mentioned in ancient texts such as the Pithanirnaya Tantra, further authenticating its status as a Shaktipeeth.

Significance of the Temple

The Phullara Shaktipeeth is especially revered for:
Blessings of speech, expression, and creativity, as the lip symbolizes communication
Fulfillment of heartfelt desires and removing sorrow
Inner peace, joy, and spiritual strength, symbolized by the laughter aspect of the goddess
Devotees believe that worshipping Phullara Devi grants divine blessings for eloquence, devotion, and emotional healing.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple features traditional Bengali temple architecture, modest yet spiritually vibrant. Though not grand in size, the divine energy of the place is immense.

Key architectural features:

  • A simple sanctum (garbhagriha) with the idol or symbolic representation of Phullara Devi
  • A shrine for Bhairava Vishweshwar nearby
  • Open surroundings, village ambience, and natural serenity, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere
  • An ancient peepal tree and pond near the temple, believed to be sacred

The temple is visited by locals and pilgrims alike, especially during Devi festivals and new/full moon days.
