Shri Avanti Temple Shakti Peetha

Shri Bahula Devi Shaktipeeth Temple is one of the 51 sacred Shaktipeethas, mentioned in Hindu Puranas as divine sites where parts of Goddess Sati’s body fell. The temple is located in Bahula village, near Katwa in the Bardhaman (Burdwan) district of West Bengal, India.

“श्री अवन्ती देवी स्तुति
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे। अवन्ती देव्यै नमः।
Meaning: “Salutations to Goddess Avanti, embodiment of wisdom, strength, and divine speech.”

― Shri Avanti Temple Shakti Peetha

In this Shaktipeeth, it is believed that the upper lip (अधर) of Goddess Sati fell, and the Divine Mother is worshipped here as “Avanti Devi”, while Lord Shiva is venerated as Lambakarna Bhairava.

Mythological Significance & History

The origin of this Shaktipeeth ties back to the story of Daksha Yagna. When Goddess Sati immolated herself in protest of her father Daksha’s insult to her husband Lord Shiva, a grief-stricken Shiva performed the Tandava (cosmic dance), carrying her burning body. To protect the cosmos from destruction, Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati’s body using his Sudarshan Chakra. The places where the body parts fell became revered as Shaktipeethas.
In Ujjain, where the upper lip fell, the energy of the Goddess settled and is worshipped as Avanti Devi—a fierce yet benevolent aspect of the Mother Goddess, symbolizing speech, expression, and divine command.

Spiritual Importance

Shri Avanti Shaktipeeth is not only sacred as a Peetha but is deeply connected to the Jyotirlinga of Mahakaleshwar, which lies nearby in Ujjain. Devotees often visit both temples on the same pilgrimage. The region is also part of the Kumbh Mela circuit, making it one of the most spiritually potent places in Hindu tradition.
Pilgrims believe that offering prayers at this temple:
Grants freedom from speech disorders and negative karmic imprints related to words.
Enhances devotional expression and spiritual communication.
Blesses seekers with clarity, wisdom, and eloquence.

Architecture of the Temple

The architectural style of the Avanti Shaktipeeth Temple reflects traditional central Indian temple architecture:

Nearby, the grand and ancient Mahakaleshwar Temple exhibits more elaborate architecture, often visited along with Avanti Peeth.

A simple yet spiritually charged sanctum houses the idol of Avanti Devi.

Sculptures and motifs of Shakti and Bhairava decorate the surroundings.

The temple complex is modest but resonates with intense spiritual vibrations.
