Raja Rajeshwara Temple, Vemulawada

Raja Rajeshwara Temple

The Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple, locally known as Rajanna, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Vemulawada, Telangana, this sacred site is revered as Dakshina Kashi (Southern Kasi) and Harihara Kshetram due to its unique blend of Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions—evident from the presence of two Vaishnava shrines nearby.

“जहाँ हर धड़कन ‘ॐ नमः शिवाय’ गाती है, वहाँ राजा राजेश्वर स्वामी का राज होता है।”

― Raja Rajeshwara Temple

The region historically served as the capital of the Vemulawada Chalukyas, who held sway over parts of modern Telangana and neighboring regions.

Mythological Significance & History

Believed to have been established between 750 and 973 CE by Raja Narendra (grandson of Parikshit), the temple’s origin story recounts how he was cured of leprosy after bathing in the sacred pond (Dharmagundam) and enshrining a Shiva Lingam he discovered there following a divine vision.

Significance of the Temple

Devotees come seeking blessings for healing and fulfillment of heartfelt wishes, owing to the sanctity and benevolence of Lord Raja Rajeshwara (Neela Lohitha Siva Lingam).

The shrine is deeply associated with several legends, including the healing of Surya Deva (Sun God) here, earning it the title Bhaskara Kshetram, and Lord Indra purifying himself of sin through worship.
The presence of a Dargah within the temple complex stands as a powerful emblem of religious harmony and tolerance.

Annual festivals such as Mahashivaratri, Sri Rama Navami, Bonalu, Dasara, and Bathukamma draw huge gatherings.

Architecture of the Temple

Numerous sub-temples (upalayas) enrich the complex, including shrines for Ananta Padmanabha Swamy, Seetha Rama Chandra Swamy, Anjaneya, Kasi Visweswara, Dakshinamurthy, Subramanya with Devasena, Bala Tripura Sundari, Someshwara, Uma Maheshwara, Mahishasuramardhini, Kotilingalu, and Kala Bhairava.

The temple showcases Dravidian architectural style, with contributions from Chalukyan, Kakatiya, and Vijayanagara eras, marked by successive renovations.

The complex stands around a large sacred tank (Dharmagundam/Gudicheruvu), where devotees bathe before entering.

The central shrine houses the Neela Lohitha Shiva Lingam, flanked by Raja Rajeshwari Devi (right) and Siddi Vinayaka (left).
