Muthappan Temple

The Muthappan Temple, also known as Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple or Parassini Madappura, is a unique devotional site situated on the banks of the Valapattanam River, around 20 km from Kannur in Kerala’s Malabar region.

“मुथप्पन वह हैं जो जात-पात नहीं देखते, बस सच्चे दिल से पुकारने वाले को गले लगाते हैं।”

― Muthappan Temple

The presiding deity, Sree Muthappan, is a singular deity embodying aspects of both Lord Vishnu (Thiruvappana) and Lord Shiva (Vellatom) This temple stands out for its inclusive, folk-style worship that invites all faiths and casts.

Mythological Significance & History

Legend recounts that a Brahmin woman named Padikutty Antharjanam found a baby floating in a basket on the river. Raised as her own, the boy—later named Muthappan—grew to be a compassionate hunter who helped the poor. As he hunted, he violated brahminical norms, angering his parents. Ultimately, he revealed his divine form, signifying himself as Lord Shiva in a hunter’s avatar, and settled at this sacred spot. Over time, he was revered as a deity combining the essence of Shiva and Vishnu

Dogs are considered sacred, believed to be Muthappan’s companions—statues of dogs guard the entrance and they even receive the prasadam first .
