Mangottu Kavu Temple

Mangottu Kavu Temple is a revered shrine located in Athipotta, near Alathur in Palakkad district, Kerala.According to local legend, a devoted weaver named Kuttan (or Unni Mannadiar), while selling clothes during a festival, was so moved by the Goddess that he mentally begged her to come with him.

It is dedicated to Goddess Mangottu Bhagavathi, a fierce form of the Divine Mother and considered the younger sister of Parakkattu Bhagavathi.

Mythological Significance & History

The Mangottu Bhagavathi Temple is believed to be over 1000 years old, with its origins rooted in local folklore, devotion, and oral tradition.
The temple’s central deity is Mangottu Bhagavathi, a fierce and protective form of the Goddess Durga, who is believed to bless her devotees with courage, prosperity, and protection from evil.
The temple evolved as a center of folk traditions, classical rituals, and Shakti worship, particularly in the Valluvanad region of Kerala.

Significance of the Temple

The temple symbolizes the Goddess’s compassionate presence among devotees and stands as a spiritual beacon for the local community. It also reflects deep-rooted cultural devotion, with the deity revered for protection and divine power.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in traditional Kerala style, characterized by gabled roofs and woodwork.

The main deity is Mangottu Bhagavathi (Bhadrakali). There is a sub-shrine for Lord Ganapathy in the south-west corner (referred to as Kanni Moola) and another for Mookken Chathen, a guardian spirit, on the northern side.

The temple complex includes a Kalyana Mandapam (marriage hall) and lodging facilities managed by the Malabar Devaswom Board, with hereditary trusteeship held by Poomully Mana.

By Road: Athipotta is approximately 10 km from Alathur. Buses, autos, and taxis are available.
