ॐ जगन्नाथाय नमः
Om Jagannathaya Namah

― Jagannath Temple,

The temple is world-famous for the annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival), when the deities are taken out in grand wooden chariots for public darshan.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s origins trace back to 12th century CE, built by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
According to legend, the idol of Lord Jagannath was first worshipped by King Indradyumna in ancient times.
The present temple structure was completed in 1161 CE and has withstood multiple invasions and restorations.
Jagannath worship incorporates elements from tribal traditions, making it unique among Hindu temples.

Significance of the Temple

Considered one of the Char Dhams along with Badrinath, Rameswaram, and Dwarka.
The only temple where Lord Vishnu is worshipped in a wooden form and replaced every 12–19 years in the Nabakalebara ritual.
Symbolizes religious inclusivity — all devotees, irrespective of caste or creed, are welcome during the Rath Yatra.
Believed to be the final resting place of Lord Krishna’s heart, placed inside the idol of Lord Jagannath.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the Kalinga style of architecture, with a towering 65-meter-high shikhara visible from miles away.
The complex has four main gates — Singhadwara, Ashwadwara, Hathidwara, and Vyaghradwara.
The sanctum houses the wooden idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra placed on a raised platform.
The temple also has Mukhashala (porch), Nata Mandir (dancing hall), and Bhoga Mandap (offering hall).
The kitchen is considered the largest in the world, preparing Mahaprasad for thousands daily.

The main sanctum houses a Shivling, continuously bathed with water and milk by devotees.

An adjacent shrine is dedicated to Goddess Parvati.

The temple complex includes several smaller shrines dedicated to other deities and a large courtyard for rituals and gatherings.

The structure is simple yet spiritually vibrant, with whitewashed walls and stone-paved floors.
