Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple

Located in the serene village of Goravanahalli in Tumkur district, Karnataka, the Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, revered as the divine bestower of wealth, prosperity, and well-being.

“हे देवी! आप वह हैं जो सिद्धि (उपलब्धि), बुद्धि और भुक्ति—मुक्ति देना—इन सबका दान करती हैं।”

― Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple

The temple complex also includes shrines for Goddess Marikamba and Manchala Nagappa (the serpent deity), and is surrounded by lush greenery near the Theetha Reservoir on the Suvarnamukhi River.

Mythological Significance & History

According to legend, Abbayya, a poor villager, discovered and worshipped a self-manifested idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi, which brought him prosperity. He and his brother Thotadappa engaged in charitable work, with their home becoming known as “Lakshmi Nivas.” After Abbayya’s death, Thotadappa was instructed in a dream by the Goddess to build a temple—thus establishing the shrine.
From 1910 to 1925, the temple fell into neglect. A devoted lady named Kamalamma revived it in 1925, paused, and then returned in 1952 to restore regular worship. Since then, the temple has become a renowned pilgrimage site

Significance of the Temple

The idol is believed to be svayambhu (self-manifested), making the temple deeply auspicious for devotees seeking blessings for prosperity and protection.
The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Lakshadeepotsava (Lakshmi’s Festival of a Hundred Thousand Lamps) in Kartik month, as well as during Amavasya, Purnima, and Varamahalakshmi days

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the South Indian architectural style of the early 1900s, the temple features a large multi-colored gopuram, side verandas, and a sanctum sanctorum that houses Goddess Mahalakshmi. The temple also includes shrines for Marikamba and the snake deity Manchala Nagappa
