The Godavari Tir Shakti Peeth, also known as the Puruhutika Devi Temple, is situated in Pithapuram, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. making it a rare and sacred combination of Shiva and Shakti worship in the same premises.

Mythological Significance & History

According to Hindu mythology, when Sati Devi immolated herself at Daksha Yagna, Lord Shiva, stricken with grief, carried her body across the universe. To calm him, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember her body, and the pieces fell at different places, which became Shakti Peethas.
At Pithapuram, it is believed that Sati’s left hand fell, making it a Maha Shakti Peeth. Ancient scriptures like Skanda Purana and Markandeya Purana mention this holy site, highlighting its significance.

Significance of the Temple

Considered one of the most sacred Maha Shakti Peethas in India.
The presiding deity Puruhutika Devi is believed to bless devotees with courage, prosperity, and protection from obstacles.
Devotees throng during Navratri and Shakti Pujas, making it a hub of spiritual energy.
As it is within the Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple, devotees can worship both Lord Shiva (as Kukkuteswara) and Shakti (as Puruhutika Devi) at the same place.
It is a major Godavari Tir pilgrimage spot, attracting thousands of devotees throughout the year

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the Dravidian style, with intricate carvings and stone structures.

The sanctum (garbhagriha) enshrines Goddess Puruhutika adorned with flowers, kumkum, and sacred jewels.

The temple complex includes Kukkuteswara Swamy Lingam, uniquely shaped like a hen’s head (hence the name Kukkuta).

The temple exudes divine serenity with simple yet spiritually powerful surroundings.
