― Devi Jagadambi Temple

The temple is renowned for its artistic carvings, exquisite sculptures, and unique design style.

Mythological Significance & History

The origins of Peer Kho Temple trace back to the epic era of the Mahabharata. It is believed that Jamvant, the wise bear from the Ramayana, meditated in this cave. Over time, the cave became a place of deep spiritual significance.
The temple was later developed and renovated during the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh (1834–1856 AD), the founder of the Dogra dynasty. Since then, it has been a major center of devotion and pilgrimage, especially during Shivratri and the month of Sawan.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is revered as a shrine to Devi Parvati, worshipped as Jagadambi Mata (Mother of the Universe).
Devotees believe the Goddess here is the embodiment of Shakti (Divine Feminine Power), granting protection, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.
Spiritually, it is also significant for its carvings of apsaras, celestial beings, and divine forms, symbolizing the union of the earthly and the divine.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in the Nagara style of North Indian temple architecture.

It consists of three main parts:

Garbhagriha (Sanctum) – housing the image of Devi Jagadambi.

Mandapa (Hall) – with carved pillars.

Pradakshina Patha – for circumambulation.

The idol of Devi Parvati in the sanctum is depicted in a striking form, symbolizing divine motherhood.

The outer walls are adorned with beautiful sculptures of gods, goddesses, celestial nymphs, and mythological motifs, typical of Khajuraho’s world-famous art.
