Bhadrachalam Temple

The Sri Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple, commonly called the Bhadrachalam Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Rama (in his four-armed Vaikuntha Rama form), along with Sita and Lakshmana.

“जहाँ गोदावरी की लहरें गूंजती हैं ‘राम’ नाम में – वही है भद्राचलम धाम।”

― Bhadrachalam Temple

Situated on the banks of the Godavari River in Bhadrachalam, Telangana, the temple is one of the noted Divya Kshetrams and is often referred to as Dakshina Ayodhya.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s legendary origins are linked to the Treta Yuga, when Sage Bhadra—born from a stone—mediated on Godavari’s banks and Rama fulfilled his promise by appearing before him
It was revived in the 17th century by Kancherla Gopanna, famously known as Bhakta Ramadasu. Appointed as a revenue officer, he used state funds to build the temple, resulting in his imprisonment. According to legend, Rama and Lakshmana appeared in a dream of the Sultan, who then released Gopanna, and subsequently supported the temple’s construction

Significance of the Temple

Divya Kshetram and considered Dakshina Ayodhya, reflecting its deep Ramayana connections
Roots in Ramayana lore: the place where Rama crossed the Godavari during his exile, making it spiritually potent
A center of devotional music and bhakti tradition, popularized by Bhakta Ramadasu’s hymns

Architecture of the Temple

Designed to represent Bhadra mythologically, the layout symbolizes his head, heart, and feet: the head shrine, the sanctum (heart), and the Rajagopuram (feet).

Built in Dravidian style, with intricate carvings, halls (mandapams), and a gold-plated dwajasthambam made of Panchaloha (five-metal alloy).

The temple houses multiple sub‑shrines, such as those for Hanuman, Yogananda Narasimha, Govindaraja Swamy, along with an exhibition center (Rushya Mookham) showcasing relics like Rama Mada coins and jewelry made by Gopanna
