Kankalitala Temple, Birbhum

Kankalitala Temple

Kankalitala Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is located near Bolpur-Shantiniketan in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India. The name “Kankalitala” comes from the Sanskrit word “Kankala”, meaning “waist,” because it is believed that the waist (hip) of Goddess Sati fell at this spot.

The temple is considered highly sacred and is an important pilgrimage site for devotees of Shakti.

Mythological Significance & History

Daksha’s Yajna, Lord Shiva carried her charred body and roamed the universe in grief. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu dismembered her body with his Sudarshan Chakra, and the body parts fell across various parts of the Indian subcontinent. Each site became a Shakti Peetha.
At Kankalitala, it is believed that Sati’s waist (kankal) fell, sanctifying the place. A sacred kund (pond) beside the temple is believed to have formed from the divine impact.

Significance of the Temple

Spiritual importance: Kankalitala is a place where devotees seek liberation, blessings for health, wealth, and inner strength.
Shakti Peetha: It holds immense spiritual power as one of the major Shakti Peethas.
Festivals: Special pujas are performed during Chaitra Sankranti, Navratri, Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Shivratri, and other auspicious days.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple has simple architecture, with a pyramidal roof and a small sanctum (garbhagriha).

The idol of Goddess Kali is usually a symbolic stone or metal piece worshipped with deep devotion.

There is a natmandir (prayer hall) for devotees to sit and perform rituals.

A sacred pond (kund) is present near the temple, believed to be filled with divine energy.

The surroundings are peaceful, covered with trees and open space for gatherings during festivals.

By Train:
Nearest station: Bolpur – Shantiniketan Railway Station (~7–9 km)
From there, autos and taxis are easily available.

By Road:
Easily accessible via NH114 or local roads from Bolpur and Santiniketan.

By Air:
Nearest airport: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata (~170 km)
From Kolkata, you can take a train or cab to Bolpur.
