Mookambika Temple

Sri Mookambika Temple in Kollur, Udupi District, Karnataka, is dedicated to Mookambika Devi, an embodiment of Adi Parashakti and the divine union of Trimurti (Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma) and Tridevi (Parvati, Lakshmi, Saraswati).

“हे माँ मूकांबिका, जिनकी आँखें शलभ (blue lotus) की भांति कोमल हैं, जिनके मुख पर चंद्रमा की झलक है, और जो शिवजी को प्रिय हैं।”

― Sri Mookambika Temple

The main deity is a swayambhu Jyotirlinga, symbolizing the cosmic union of divine masculine and feminine energies

Mythological Significance & History

The temple dates back to approximately 800 CE, built by King Halugallu Veera Sangayya.
According to legend, the demon Mookasura lost his speech through the divine power of the goddess. The combined energies of Trimurti and Tridevi manifested as Mookambika, who vanquished the demon.

Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have consecrated the deity and installed her on a Sri Chakra pedestal, and also introduced the temple’s unique Kashayam theertham—a medicinal prasadam.

Over time, patrons like Rani Chennamaji, Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya, and the Keladi rulers contributed to its ornamentation and structure; the temple also faced plundering during the Maratha raids.

Significance of the Temple

Sri Mookambika is worshipped in three forms: as Saraswati in the morning, Lakshmi at noon, and Parvati in the evening—symbolizing knowledge, wealth, and strength.
The temple is sacred to both Shiva and Shakti followers, forming part of the 108 Shivalayas and 108 Durgalayas of Kerala’s tradition.
Devotees also believe that visiting this Mukthi Sthala grants spiritual liberation and blessings for wisdom and education

Architecture of the Temple

The temple exhibits a mix of Dravidian, Vijayanagara, and Hoysala architectural styles.

Its quadrangular sanctum features a gold-plated vimana, along with a Lakshmi Mantapa, a sacred hall.

Various sub-shrines include deities like Ganesha, Subrahmanya, Hanuman, Gopalakrishna, Virabhadra, Dashabhuja Ganapathi, Chandramouleeswara, and Snake gods.

The entrance features a Dwajasthambam and Deepasthambam, and the outer walls allow lamp-lighting during rituals.

The Saraswati Mandapam is a special pavilion where new learners begin their education (Vidya Arambham)
