Vittala Temple Nimbapura

Vittala Temple

Vittala Temple, also known as Vijaya Vittala Temple, is a grand 15th-century shrine located on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River in Hampi, Karnataka, within the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is dedicated to Lord Vittala, a form of Lord Vishnu.

“विट्ठल नाम में वह शक्ति है, जो जीवन की हर पीड़ा को भक्ति में बदल देती है।”

― Vittala Temple

The temple complex is famed for its exceptional craftsmanship, iconic Stone Chariot, and mesmerizing musical pillars.

Mythological Significance & History

Built originally by King Devaraya II (1422–1446 CE) and later expanded by the renowned Krishnadevaraya (1509–1529 CE), the temple reflects the zenith of Vijayanagara architectural excellence. Despite partial ruin due to invasions, its grandeur continues to captivate visitors..

Significance of the Temple

Though primarily a pilgrimage site honoring Lord Vittala, the temple also served as a vibrant cultural arena. Its architectural marvels—especially the musical pillars—symbolize the fusion of devotion and artistry.
It hosts major cultural festivities like the Purandaradasa Aradhana in January–February and the Hampi Utsav (Vijaya Utsav) with folk performances, processions, and cultural displays.

Architecture of the Temple

Dravidian Style: Crafted as a vast courtyard with pillared halls, sanctum, and elaborate carvings.

Stone Chariot: An iconic granite shrine shaped like a ceremonial chariot for Garuda. It’s one of only three famous stone chariots in India.

Musical Pillars (Ranga Mandapa): A set of 56 pillars that produce musical notes (Sa Re Ga Ma…) when tapped, showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship.

Additional Structures: The complex includes the Kalyana Mandapa (ceremonial marriage hall), a 100‑pillared hall, Goddess’s shrine, cloisters, and more.

How to Reach to Temple

By Road & Foot: About 9 km from Hampi Bus Stand (~₹40 via auto), or a scenic walk along the riverbank from Hampi Bazaar.
