Jhandewalan Temple

Jhandewalan Mandir is one of the most famous and revered temples of Delhi dedicated to Maa Aadi Shakti (Maa Durga). Located on Jhandewalan Road, near Karol Bagh, the temple attracts thousands of devotees every day. The name Jhandewalan comes from the Hindi word Jhande (flag), as large flags were offered here by devotees during ancient times

― Jhandewalan Temple

The temple is a major pilgrimage site, especially during Navratri, when grand celebrations take place.

Mythological Significance & History

The history of the temple dates back to the 18th century, when a devotee named Badri Bhagat discovered the idol of Maa Aadi Shakti while digging the ground. Since then, the place became a sacred site of worship. Later, the temple was developed and became an important Shakti Peeth in Delhi. Over time, various rulers and devotees contributed to the renovation and beautification of the shrine. Today, the temple stands as a grand spiritual landmark of Delhi.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is dedicated to Maa Aadi Shakti in two forms – one in the underground cave shrine (Maa Jhandewali in Pindi form) and another in the upper shrine (Maa Durga idol form).
It is believed that offering flags (Jhande) here fulfills wishes and removes obstacles.
During Navratri, the temple is decorated beautifully, and lakhs of devotees come to seek blessings.
The temple holds great importance among Shakti worshippers and is considered a source of strength, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple reflects traditional North Indian temple architecture.

It has a grand entrance with ornate carvings and tall shikharas (towers).

The sanctum houses the Pindi form of Maa Aadi Shakti in the underground cave and a beautiful idol of Maa Durga in the upper level.

The temple complex is spacious with marble floors, vibrant decorations, and multiple shrines dedicated to other deities.

The spiritual atmosphere is enhanced by the continuous chanting of mantras and devotional bhajans.
