Mythological Significance & History

The origins of Kalpeshwar Temple trace back to the legends of the Mahabharata. According to mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their sins. Shiva, avoiding them, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground. His body parts are said to have appeared at five different locations, known as the Panch Kedar. At Kalpeshwar, the hair (jata) of Lord Shiva appeared. This place was later sanctified by sages and continues to be a pilgrimage site for spiritual seekers.
