Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Mukteswar Dham, is located near Doong village, about 22 km from Pathankot in Punjab’s Shivalik foothills.

“जहाँ शिव स्वयं ‘मुक्ति’ का वरदान देते हैं, वह धाम है — मुक्तेश्वर महादेव।”

― Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple

It is built atop a hill overlooking the Ravi River, offering scenic surroundings and spiritual serenity

History of the Temple

According to local tradition, the temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile (Agyatwas), nearly 5,500 years ago. They constructed four caves and a white marble Shiva‑linga during their six‑month stay.

The name Mukteshwar means “Lord of Salvation” or “God of Liberation”. It is believed that Lord Shiva granted salvation (Mukti) to a demon at this sacred site.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple complex features a white marble Shivling placed in a copper yoni, surrounded by idols of Brahma, Vishnu, Parvati, Hanuman, Ganesha, and Nandi.

The area includes four naturally‑carved caves said to be the Pandavas’ dwellings, including one cave with a kitchen (Draupadi’s rasoi) and a family chamber.

It is enveloped by natural greenery and commanding views of the hills and the Ravi River valley.

Religious Significance

Known as the “mini Haridwar”, devotees immerse ash in the Ravi River here when they cannot travel to Haridwar.

It is believed that sincere worship, especially during Shivratri, Sawan, and Somvati Amavasya, can relieve sorrow and grant spiritual peace.
