Mansa Devi Temple

Mansa Devi Temple

Mansa Devi Temple, located atop the Bilwa Parvat in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, is one of the most visited Shakti temples in North India. Dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti, the temple is known for fulfilling the wishes of sincere devotees. The name “Mansa” is derived from the word “manas”, meaning mind—she is the goddess who fulfills wishes that arise in the heart and mind.

ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं श्री मांसादेव्यै नमः॥
Om Aim Hreem Kleem Shri Mansa Devyai Namah
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मन्षारूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

― Mansa Devi Temple

It is one of the Panch Tirth (Five Pilgrimages) within Haridwar and forms a holy trinity with Chandi Devi and Maya Devi Temples.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to have been established in the 9th century, though the current structure was built in the early 19th century by King Gopal Singh of Mani Majra.
According to legends, Mansa Devi was born from the mind (manas) of Lord Shiva, and is considered the sister of Naga (serpent) Vasuki.
Over centuries, the temple became a prominent site for Shakti and Tantric worship, attracting saints, pilgrims, and yogis from across India.

Significance of the Temple

Mansa Devi is revered as a wish-fulfilling deity. Devotees tie sacred threads to the “manning tree” (a holy grid or fence near the temple) to make a wish, and return to untie it once the wish is fulfilled.
The temple is especially visited during Navratri, Chaitra (March–April), and Sharad (Sept–Oct).
It is part of the sacred Haridwar Shakti Peeth Triangle, with Chandi Devi and Maya Devi temples.
The view from the temple offers a panoramic glimpse of the Ganga River and Haridwar city.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple showcases traditional North Indian hill temple architecture, with bright red-yellow exteriors, a pyramidal spire (shikhara), and vibrant flags fluttering in the breeze.

The main sanctum houses two idols of Goddess Mansa:

  • One with three faces and five arms
  • Another with eight arms

The complex is spacious with prayer halls, bells, and a courtyard for offerings and rituals.
