Sri Ram Tirth Temple

Sri Ram Tirth Temple

Shri Ram Tirth Temple, located approximately 11 km west of Amritsar in Punjab, is believed to be the ancient Valmiki Ashram where Sage Valmiki sheltered Goddess Sita during her exile.

“जहाँ श्रीराम का नाम लिया जाता है, वहाँ धर्म, मर्यादा और करुणा स्वतः प्रकट हो जाते हैं।”

― Sri Ram Tirth Temple

Here she gave birth to her twins, Luv and Kush, and Valmiki is said to have composed the Ramayana at this site.

History of the Temple

Mythologically linked to the Ramayana era, the temple marks the birthplace of Luv and Kush and the ashram where Valmiki guided them.

It is said that Ram’s forces fought with Luv and Kush at this very location, making it historically significant in the epic’s narrative.

The Ram Tirth Fair, a grand annual gathering around Kartik Purnima (Oct–Nov), attracts thousands of devotees with cultural performances and rituals.

Architecture of the Temple

The sprawling complex spans around 10 hectares and features a large sacred tank, replicas of Valmiki’s hermitage, and multiple shrines including those of Sita, Luv-Kush, and Hanuman .

The temple boasts traditional North Indian style architecture—shikharas (towers), ornate pillars, murals depicting Ramayana scenes, and verandahs around the tank .

Plans include a Valmiki Temple with a museum, constructed in reinforced concrete clad with white marble, featuring geometric symmetry and river edge platforms—symbolizing a blend of traditional and modern architectural styles (under development).

Religious Significance

The site is revered as the ashram of Sage Valmiki, the composer of the Ramayana, making it a key pilgrimage destination for devotees of Lord Rama.

The sacred sarovar (tank) within the temple complex is believed to cleanse sins and grant spiritual merits after a holy dip.
