Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple is one of the most revered Shakti temples in Northern India, located in Nainital, Uttarakhand. Perched atop the Naina Hill, overlooking the beautiful Naini Lake, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Naina Devi, a form of Shakti.

― Naina Devi Temple

It holds immense spiritual and mythological significance and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the eyes (Naina) of Goddess Sati are believed to have fallen.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is rooted in the ancient legend of Sati and Lord Shiva.
When Sati immolated herself during the yajna organized by her father Daksha, a grief-stricken Lord Shiva carried her charred body across the universe.
To save the world from the cosmic imbalance, Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati’s body using his Sudarshan Chakra.
It is believed that Sati’s head fell at the site of Surkanda, sanctifying it as a Shakti Peetha.
The temple has been a place of worship for centuries and continues to draw saints and devotees who seek spiritual energy and blessings from the goddess.

Significance of the Temple

Surkanda Devi is worshipped as an embodiment of Shakti (power), and the temple is especially powerful for tantric sadhanas, wish fulfillment, and purification.
The temple is one of the three Siddh Peeths in the region, alongside Chandrabadni and Kunjapuri Devi temples.
Pilgrims visit the temple in large numbers during the Ganga Dussehra festival in May–June, when a grand fair is held.
Devotees believe that offering prayers here removes negativity, grants protection, and brings success.

Architecture of the Temple

The architecture is traditional Himalayan stone and wood, with a steep-pitched roof to withstand snow.

The main sanctum houses a stone idol or rock pindi of Goddess Surkanda.

The temple is surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests and snow-covered peaks during winter.

The approach to the temple involves a steep 1.5 km trek from the base village Kaddukhal, lined with flags, prayer bells, and scenic viewpoints
