Vishnupada Mandir

Vishnupada Mandir

Vishnupad Mandir is a sacred Hindu temple located in Gaya, Bihar, on the banks of the Falgu River. The temple is built around a 40 cm long footprint of Lord Vishnu, carved in solid rock known as the Dharmashila.

“जहाँ चरण पड़े विष्णु के, वहीं बसता है मोक्ष का मार्ग।”

―Vishnupada Mandir

It is believed that this is where Lord Vishnu placed his foot to subdue the demon Gayasura.

Mythological Significance & History

While the origins of the temple are ancient and unclear, legends say Lord Rama and Sita once visited this site to perform Pind Daan (ancestral rituals). The current temple structure was rebuilt in 1787 AD by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who is known for restoring many important Hindu shrines across India.

Significance of the Temple

Vishnupad Mandir is one of the holiest sites for performing Shraddha and Pind Daan, which are rituals to offer respect to one’s ancestors. It is believed that the soul of the demon Gayasura was granted the boon that he would receive offerings made to ancestors. Therefore, offering Pind Daan here is believed to help ancestors attain moksha (liberation).

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in traditional Shikhara style (Nagara architecture).

The main tower is approximately 100 feet tall.

The entire structure is made from gray granite stone and joined using iron clamps.

The central sanctum houses the sacred footprint of Lord Vishnu, surrounded by a silver-plated octagonal railing (pahal).

The temple is also home to the sacred Akshayavat tree, where final rites for the dead are performed.
