Shri Kapalini Temple Shakti Peetha

Shri Kapalini Shaktipeeth is one of the most spiritually potent and ancient sites among the 51 Shaktipeethas. It is believed that the right arm (दक्षिण भुजा) of Goddess Sati fell here, sanctifying the land with divine feminine power.

“या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

― Shri Kapalini Temple Shakti Peetha

The temple is dedicated to Maa Kapalini, a fearsome and powerful form of Adi Shakti, representing transformation, time, and liberation.

Mythological Significance

As per the Devi Purana, when Lord Shiva was wandering in grief with Sati’s burnt body, Lord Vishnu dismembered her corpse with his Sudarshan Chakra to end his sorrowful Tandava. The right arm fell at this location, and the site came to be known as Kapalini Shaktipeeth.
Shakti Name: Maa Kapalini (कपालिनी — “Skull bearer”, fierce form of Shakti)
Bhairava Name: Chandrashekhar (another name of Lord Shiva)
Fallen Body Part: Right arm (दक्षिण भुजा)
This Shaktipeeth holds immense tantric significance, especially for practitioners of Kali tantra and Kapalika tradition.

Temple Architecture & Surrounding

The Chandranath Temple is perched atop the Chandranath Hill (~350 meters high), making it one of the highest temples in Bangladesh.
The path to the temple involves a steep trek, offering mesmerizing views of the countryside and sea.
The shrine is built in Bengal Nagara style, modest yet spiritually intense.
The main sanctum houses Maa Kapalini, often represented by a stone or symbolic idol bathed in sindoor and red cloth.
Nearby lies a small Bhairava shrine devoted to Chandrashekhar, where devotees offer mustard oil and dhatura flowers.

Devotee Beliefs and Ritual

It is believed that offering sindoor and red hibiscus flowers pleases Maa Kapalini.

The trek to the hill is considered an act of penance, and many devotees do it barefoot.

Devotees suffering from severe planetary doshas, especially Shani and Mangal, worship here for relief.

Tantric practitioners regard it as a siddhi peeth, a powerful place for meditation and sadhna.
