“It’s Done…You Can Go…”

“It’s Done…You Can Go…” He wills and it happens. He has proved time and again that His Will reigns supreme. Many a time many of us have encountered such situations wherein His unseen abounding grace bailed us out of difficult situations in the form of small miracles. Mr B.S.K.Vittal Rao of Bangalore narrates how His Divine Resolve helped him to earn a petty favour from a mundane point, indeed a much more valued one when it comes to establish in faith…one from a billion untold miralces. I joined Baba on 6th December 1965, at Whitefield and accompanied Him during His tour to Madras etc. Dr. B. R. joined at Madras, at the last part. We all accompanied Him to Whitefield in the last week of December. We had an exhilarating elevating and glorious time throughout the Tour with Him. On the New Year Day at Whitefield, He received Pranams from about a dozen persons collected in the hall there. He suddenly approached me and said, “Happy New Year, Happy New Year”, striking me at the same time twice on my back. I was thrilled and felt supremely happy. I was moved at His Prema. I knelt at His Feet. We accompanied Him on the 6th January to Prasanthi Nilayam. Throughout the journey, we were treated to gladdening and elevating talks and melody, which quite often touched the inner chord. His Grace it was that I was to stay till my birthday on the 8th January. I was blessed indeed to receive on that day His ashirwadam, with “Nayanome premadhar, Vachanome Amruthadhar”. He brought out by a wave of His palm, as usual, a curved thin small shell with Vishnu, Shirdi Baba, our Baba and Shivalinga on it in bright colours and bestowed it on me. I had to go to Tinnevelly to perform a ceremony on the 21st January and so, I approached Baba to let me go. “How do you go?” he asked; “By bus to Penukonda and from there, by train” was my answer. “No; you are aged; you should avoid bus journey. You stay till Sankramana, January 14th and I shall send you by some Bangalore car” He said. The Kumara Raja of Sendur arrived on the 14th and Baba told me that l could go in his car, when he returned. We could leave with His Prasadam only on the 17th. I told Baba that unless ten to twelve days notice was given to the railways, a first class berth could not ordinarily be secured and implored that He alone should help me, by guaranteeing a berth. He raised the palm and said, “It is done; you can go.” As soon as I reached Bangalore, I rushed up to the Railway Station. I was shown the Register of Reservations. “There ware already seven persons on the Waiting List. The official said to me that there was no chance, unless another bogie came along, attached from Jolarpet. Else, I would have to go by the second class. I dreaded to go by second class on that long journey, which involved also travel by night. …However, I bought a first class ticket. No additional bogie came along, the next day, attached from Jolarpet. I was advised to get into a second, and if by chance, some one of the two or three that were to board from the Cantonment Railway Station did not turn up, I could get in to the first class. A certain Mr Das who wanted four first class berths had got only two and he was also pleading that he could not split up his party, one half to go in first and the outer half in second. I had half-a-mind to stay away and do the ceremony in Bangalore itself. But, Baba, had told me to go! With mixed thoughts I changed my first Class ticket into a second class one and got into a compartment near by. There were only three in that compartment; I consoled myself that the journey may not to be so uncomfortable. I was thinking of Baba’s guarantee. There were only three minutes for the departure of the train. To my surprise, Mr Das came running to my compartment, and said, he had surrendered his first class tickets and his whole party was travelling by second class. He told me, I could change. The Railway official also came and told me, I could change. My joy was unbounded I made a dash with my luggage and plumped into the berth. The train whistled off, almost at once. Wonder of wonders! How Baba’s Sankalpa worked, without prejudice to the other five or six persons on the waiting list whose names were above mine, and who had already left the platform some minutes before! What Graciousness! Nothing but Divine!!!

A Guru Purnima Experience…

A Guru Purnima Experience… He has an uncanny style of teaching and many a time it comes in the most realistic way, inducing us to stir our thought process. A devotee from Australia had such a wonderful experience during a Gurupurnima Festival at Prasanthi Nilayam in the mid seventies that the devotee learned the greatest lesson that God was (Is)  One and the entire creation was blessed to be within His Aura! The Hall, second largest In India, was estimated to have held fifteen to twenty thousand on that evening. My friend and I were sitting fairly centrally, about one third of the way back despite the invitation to sit near the front and towards the side: the position was fortunate as otherwise, I doubt if the following wonderful experience could have been possible. In His Divine discourse, with Dr Bhagavantham translating, Swami spoke about prophets and teachers of the great faiths, showing that the Sai faith embraced them all. Later on, Swami discoursed on the role of the Guru, but I heard little or nothing of this, because apparently inexplicable, my mind seemed to wander and I wondered casually if I could see Dr Bhagavantham’s aura. The dark background curtain absorbed the aura; so I switched attention to Swami to see if His aura could be discerned despite the curtain and concentrated hard to see at least His aura. Suddenly, unbelievably, Swami’s hair seemed to have disappeared! His hair had become a sort of clear transparent aura. Amazed, my concentrated gaze then discerned within this frame a quite different head of hair, shoulder length, black, with a slight wave, and Swami’s face became the face of Christ, a Jewish Christ, not the blonde Christ of the Medieval Italian artists. I gazed at this phenomenon with great interest and no religious emotion. As I gazed, the face became that of someone I could not place—possibly Zoroaster or Buddha or perhaps some teacher unfamiliar to me—and throughout the subsequent events these two animated faces recurred, to assure me that I was not inducing these visions. Having thus gained and held my attention, Swami then gave a great blessing and an emotional jolt, for there was my revered Ramana Maharishi, white haired and slender faced, utterly unlike the former visions. I was a devotee of the Maharishi, whose writings have given glimpses of reality, and had been feeling disloyal because of the new found devotion to Baba. Baba settled this disquiet by showing that there was no difference between Gurus. This indeed was the main purpose of this blessed experience. The following visions were brief and were mostly of the Hindu deities or personalities which had become meaningful to me. Rama, a brief but distinct and repeated glimpse of Ganesha, Shirdi Sai Baba and Lord Shiva. Recently I had seen a photograph of Sathya Sai Baba in which He had been depicted as Durga on Her lion, and I wondered if I might be able see Baba in this Goddess form ever. Instead, I had a breathtaking vision of Tripura Sundari—Lalita—Goddess of the Three Worlds, exquisitely beautiful and very alive. I was wondering why Krishna did not appear. So did Krishna! Periodically I yearned to see Baba Himself, with interesting consequences: I saw Him at His various ages, His face always an oval of Light; at times He dissolved into pure Light with no form at all. Now and again, in response to mental request, I saw Baba superimposed over other visions of Him talking animatedly. His face—how could I adequately describe it? —clearly visible but not of solid matter, more, like a series of points, the nucleus of matter. What was Baba’s purpose in allowing these visions? So many lessons were learnt that evening, apart from the precious knowledge that Ramana was one with Baba, that all were One and we were one with The One. Maya, illusion—the unreality of constantly mobile matter and its reality as pure Light. The Formless God who could assume any form He liked and the response of those forms to our own mental creativity. I had recently been thinking deeply about Maya, and in Ooty I had mentally, half seriously asked Baba to show me His real form.

Love That Conquers…

Love That Conquers… If He is Pure Love, if Bhagawan, our Supreme Lord, is nothing but Pure Love and His reservoir is ever a perennial one, why can’t we, so called human beings, channelise His Love, our true possession for a better purpose, removing discordant notes within as well as around us… It is when we channelise His Love spreading IT around, aiming at a better world that, we truly live His message…. a beautiful incident from Mr Paulette, Hatfield, the United Kingdom who experimented himself becoming His Channel Of Love!!! Tuesday, 21st August 1984 was a very hot sultry day as I toiled up the hill by Nuffield College, Oxford, on my way to the West Gate Library. When I was near the top I could see that quite a crowd had gathered on the edge of Born Square with more people joining it all the time. As I drew level I saw that in the centre of the crowd there were two lads fighting each other hard. These two were really slugging it out so my first thought was “I am sure Sathya Sai Baba would not approve of this.” Then I remembered the line of the prayer He has directed us to do ‘O Lord take my everything and let me be as an instrument to work for Thee’, so I said to Swami telepathically “What ever can I do?” Immediately I received the reply, just one word “LOVE.” I was puzzled for a moment as I did not see how I could give love to the two young men, when I realised that I would not have enough anyway. This triggered the idea that only Sathya Sai Baba would have enough love – then, I knew what to do. I would ask Him to use me as a channel to pour His love over them. As I had continued walking I was just beyond the fight and had turned right onto the broad pavement, so they were behind me. I took a deep breath to try to raise my vibrations, so making me a better channel, and asked Baba to pour His love through me. After three short paces curiosity overcame me, so I turned round and was amazed at what I saw- the young men’s hands had dropped to their sides. My astonishment had stopped me acting as a good channel, so I redoubled my efforts to clear my mind of all thoughts, except that of love. Both young men shuffled in a self-conscious way, then turned from each other, one going off along Queen’s Street, and the other down the hill I had come up. The crowd looked disappointed, then quickly dispersed. I thanked Sathya Sai Baba before going into the Library feeling rather stunned. Now you could say this was a coincidence, but I doubt it! Just think what would have happened if all the others in the crowd had been channelling love too – the fight would never have started. This August (1986) I have read Phyllis Krystal’s book with the account of how she channelled Sathya Sai Baba’s love to stop the hijackers, which confirms my feelings that it was no coincidence. Remember – however dangerous or frightening the situation you find yourself in, you have the strongest weapon of all, LOVE; it is a much underused commodity in our present world. Start using it now.

From Shirdi to Puttaparthi – Part 2

From Shirdi to Puttaparthi – Part 2  Later Devagiriamma became pregnant. She told her husband that by the grace of Parvati she is carrying a child. Nine months later the child was born and it was a boy. One year later, she became pregnant again and a daughter was born. They named them as Eshwara and Gauri.  Now for the third time she became pregnant. Then her husband’s mind started changing. Gangabhava started thinking that his wife’s experience was true. He too wanted to see Parvati and Eshwara. Devagiriamma said, “Eshwara promised me that He will be born as the third son. When He himself is coming here it is foolish of you to go to perform penance to see Him.” He said, “Even when God is being born to us, we will develop the maternal and paternal feeling towards Him and we won’t think of Him as a God. I will not get that Divine feeling. Therefore I have to go and pray to Eshwara and He should manifest himself.” She said, “If you are leaving the house, then I too will follow you.”  She sent the son and daughter to her native place with some workers. The husband was walking in the front and she was at the back. Around that village there was a dense forest. These days you don’t find forests. At that time the teachers used to take their students into the forests and in that cool environment the students would be chanting Vedas. Even to reach another village you had to go through a dense forest. She went on telling him that she had pains and asked him to stop for 5 minutes. She gave birth to the boy under a tree. She thought, “If my husband does not want this child then why do I need him.” So she covered the baby with some leaves and some parts of her Sari and followed her husband. They went away and both of them had the vision of God. In that village there was a Patel whose wife had gone to her native village for a festival. This Patel was bringing back his wife in a horse coach. The Patel had a lot of money and therefore he got the horse coach. They also didn’t have children. When they reached that place she heard a baby cry. She saw that this boy was on a piece of Sari and the boy was playing and crying. Drops of honey were falling from the tree in the mouth of the child. She came and called her husband and said that the baby’s body was smeared with blood. They did not know as to who had left him there. They looked around and nobody was seen. Patel’s wife thought that God had himself presented her this boy. She took the boy home. No one asked them who the child was. They were very happy thinking that God had given this child to them. The boy grew up. At the age of 7, the boy used to go to the Hindu temple and read the Quran and in the mosque, he used to chant Vedas. In those times the hatred between the Hindus and Muslims was too much. The Hindus and Muslims started complaining against this boy. The Muslims said, “You come to our mosque and chant Vedas!” The Hindus complained, “You come to our temple and read the Quran!” The Hindus and Muslims boycotted this boy from their places of worship. How much ever the boy was told, he still wouldn’t understand. Even the father tried but he still did not pay heed. The mother wanted to send the boy somewhere. She was thinking of that. Someone came and suggested that the boy should be sent to the ashram of Venkusa. At Venkusdas Ashram She took the boy to that Ashram. From inside Venkusdas came outside and said, “Boy, I have been waiting for you for the past 10 years.” He hugged this boy and took him to the Ashram. Then Venkusdas went to the mother and said, “Amma from now on he is my son. I will look after him properly. You can go home peacefully.  She was very happy thinking that this was the end of her troubles.” She said, “Now and then I will come and see my boy”. Then Venkusdas answered, “If you want to see him now and then, it’s alright. If you want you can even stay here”. But she went away. From that day Venkusdas showed immense love for that boy. When he was eating food, he used to make this boy sit by his side and eat. He would make the boy sleep in his room. He taught him all the Vedas, Shastras (scriptures) and the epics. In the school, other children were jealous of this boy. This jealousy is a curse in this age of Kali. Generally, if someone is subject to showering of love, others will develop jealousy and feel that this boy has come only recently and why is he being given so much love. This is jealousy. This jealousy crossed all the limits. One day Venkusdas was taking this boy to the forest. He sat under a tree and was teaching the boy all Vedanta. Other jealous boys threw stones at this boy from a distance. One stone hit the boy’s forehead. It started bleeding. Venkusdas tore a piece of his a dhoti and tied a piece as a bandage on the boy’s head. That piece of cloth which was tied around His head was not removed by Sai Baba till the end. They thought that it is sunset time and it is getting dark, it isn’t safe for them in the forest and so they came back to the Ashram. At that stage in the film the story of Shirdi Baba ends.

Sri Sathya Sai Inaugurates the First Mandir

Inaugurates the First Mandir Friday, December 14, 1945 Baba would supervise the Mandir construction work every single day. The devotees had the privilege of offering a glass of orange juice to the Lord whenever He walked through the narrow lanes of Puttaparthi. On Vaikuntha Ekadashi day, the 14th of December 1945, the first Mandir of Sri Sathya Sai Baba was inaugurated at Puttaparthi. Baba arrived from the Karnam’s house in procession accompanied by a musical troupe. He was seated on a florally decorated palanquin, with the idols of both the Sai Babas on either side. He installed the two idols in the main prayer hall. There were also photographs of Parthi Baba, Shirdi Baba and those of other deities that adorned the altar along with lamps on either sides.  The group from Bangalore led by Smt. Savithramma prepared a grand feast. Baba blessed the food items. There was more than enough food available to feed the villagers. When the Prasadam brought by the devotees was being distributed, Baba took a particular plate aside and asked that it shall not be distributed. He later explained to Sri Tirumala Rao that there was poison in the laddus on that plate. By a wave of His hand, He extracted the poison and commanded that the plate be buried in a pit. On the same day, Baba went to the rear of the building and placed His palm on the ground. Soon, a spring rose from the spot. Baba ordered a well to be dug at the spot. This was the only source of drinking water in the entire village. The well never dried up even in summer.

Sincerity at Workplace: Sri Sathya Sai Perspective

Sincerity at Workplace: Sri Sathya Sai Perspective When you join an organisation, you would get a huge amount of salary, an air-conditioned office chamber and the designation of a manager. Your job is not limited to putting your signature on different documents and papers. That is not sufficient. You are expected to go around the factory and find out how everybody does his or her job in the organisation. As a manager, you can discharge your responsibilities effectively only if you acquaint yourself with the various aspects of the job and know ‘who is who’ in your organisation. All this contributes to your success as a manager.  If you do not know about your work properly, but simply take rounds around the factory frequently to spend time purposelessly and also hide your deficiency, the workers may simply greet you to keep you happy, but will go their own way. On the other hand, if you possess good knowledge of your job and then take rounds around the premises of the organisation with a purpose, your subordinates will respect you whole-heartedly. You should develop this professional image which will enable you to command respect from most of the people reporting to you. One who wishes to be held in high esteem by one and all in an organisation should be able to develop this sort of personality. Here is a small example. Suppose usually 50 items are made per day. One day, only 30 are completed. It will not serve any purpose, if you shout at the worker. Enquire why only 30 were manufactured on that particular day? You may have to enquire thus: “Sir, yesterday you made 50, today only 30, what is the reason for the drop? Is it due to the shortage of power, raw material, water or machinery?” (This can be regarded as illustrative type of inquiry in this context) What are the reasons for this change? Or does the mistake lie with the worker or with the machine? You should go on probing in this manner whenever required.  If you know the job well, then you would be able to correct your subordinate in an authentic way. If you shout impulsively thus: “Why is there shortage now?”, you would create an impression about yourself that you are not well informed. The worker will say, “I know this machine. I have been working here for 20 years. You came only yesterday. What do you know?” In such a situation, you will be put to shame. Therefore, first we should understand the job ourselves and only then question our subordinates and colleagues. If you are careful in these minor aspects also, you will be respected by your peers and even your juniors. All the foregoing description constitutes the personality which would help you to safeguard your image and reputation. Your position should be dignified. You should also pay back through dedicated and sincere service for the salary you receive. Then you will attract the favourable attention of everybody and every employee will develop respect for you.

My Life Is His Message…

My Life Is His Message… What would you have done if you were to face a tricky situation, seeing a hapless girl crying for help in the public, especially beyond the dusk? Would you have waited for the next person to pitch in…or for the Messiah to drop from the ‘heavens’ to bail the suffering one out of her misery?  A true heart that beats incessantly for Him  would never fail to follow the conscious call, ‘My Life Is His Message”. An inspiring story from Sri Jullie Chaudhuri, from the Sri Sathya Sai Newsletter, Pune, July 2013. It had been quite a busy Wednesday. In the evening, I had to step out for some domestic purchases. As I strolled down the road towards the shops in the Dais plot area, I passed an elderly lady and a young girl. Something made me look back at them and I saw the girl was  crying. I stopped to ask if everything was alright, then, moved on, thinking it was a personal matter, and they could sort it out. However, the old lady stopped me and said that the girl had left her home and was wandering around aimlessly. Having encountered a bit of a threat from a rickshaw driver, she was frightened and hence the tears. It was around 2030 hrs. My mind started ticking. How could we leave this defenseless 13-year-old to roam the streets at night like this? After speaking to two of my nieces, I got the number of a lawyer who helps with women’s issues, as well as Sindhutai Sapkal’s number. The courageous life of Sindhutai, known as ‘Mother of orphans’, who had lived the life of a beggar after being thrown out by her husband when she was nine months pregnant, has inspired millions. The lawyer did not answer my call, but Sindhutai’s daughter did. She said the normal procedure to take a child into their home for destitute children was through a police complaint. I told her that I was rushing to the nearest Police Station and would call her from there. I felt that this would be the safest place for this young girl. In the crowded hutment area, as I was making my calls, I lost sight of this girl. Appealing to Bhagawan to guide my steps, I searched for her. I met Meena, the lady who cooks at my brother’s place. Without batting an eyelid she offered to assist and sort things out. I prayed deep to Bhagawan to help me find this girl in that overcrowded milieu. Finally, I spotted her at one of the shops. We approached and started questioning her to find out more about her. Some more good samaritans gathered…all giving varied ideas. Meena took charge, asking me to carry on home as I had to check on my mother. She assured me that she would call. No sooner had I reached home than she called to say that we should take the girl to the police station as her stories kept changing. We agreed it was not safe for her on the streets nor was it right for us to keep her in our respective homes without proper investigation. Meena fed this girl some dinner and met me at Maharshinagar Police Chowki. It was now 10 pm. The ASI in charge said firmly that they would send her to the government owned home or ashram and not to a private one. Even so, I made the ASI speak to Mamatatai Sapkal, who then assured me that this was the right thing to do. The cops started their questioning and this 13-year-old child kept making up stories – her parents were dead, her uncle had threatened her and did not want her, she was from Ahmadpur, she could not say which area, she insisted she had lived alone in that village, etc. We spent two hours questioning her. I was not happy with the idea of her being placed in the remand home. While leaving for the Police Station, after having prayed for guidance from Bhagawan, I had hurriedly grabbed a book and a packet of vibhuti for this girl. Since she was being taken to the govt. ashram, I put this book and vibhuti packet in her hands and mentally said to Bhagawan – You sent this child my way, I now surrender her to You…I place her back in Your care! I assured her that Sai Baba would look after her. A little after this, the Inspector who was writing the complaint, looked up and asked her whether she wanted to go home or to this ashram. She said she preferred the ashram as she had nobody. The police knew she was not being truthful. They deliberately raised their voices letting her know that the consequences may not be favourable if she did not speak the truth. Life at these homes was very hard. Thinking that she was in for a beating, she broke down and spoke about her parents, her sister, where her father was employed, that they lived in Chandan Nagar, she had left home at 4 pm, etc. Her father was a driver for a person who owned a lot of trucks. This person was known to the police personnel. They called up the employer for details. Meanwhile, this girl blurted out her mother’s mobile number, who was then traced and asked to report to the police station in her area. I called her and let her know that her daughter was safe. Following protocol and procedure, we all were escorted across town to a police chowki in Chandan Nagar. It was a little after midnight. Needless to say the distraught mother was overwhelmed to be reunited with her daughter, who had left after a somewhat harsh scolding from her. Residents of the entire Tulja Bhavani basti had come there to receive their child. We spoke to them and asked them not to be rough on her for her impulsive blunder for no

The Oasis of Love – By B. Satish Chandra

The Oasis of Love – By B. Satish Chandra “This is where I want to be!” – This was my first reaction as I entered the Vidyagiri Arch in Prasanthi Nilayam. The bus, which carried me, passed grudgingly through the desolate plains of Rayalaseema before entering Prasanthi Nilayam, which seemed to me like an oasis in the middle of a desert. It was the middle of May 1998, the time of the year when the sun ‘shows off’ the most. Calling the heat ‘oppressive’ would be an understatement. But as the bus neared Parthi, the heat didn’t seem that oppressive or perhaps I was too engrossed in watching the scenario around me that I didn’t feel it. I was awe – struck at the palatial Super – Speciality Hospital, the large Hanuman statue watching over the people coming to Parthi, the sprawling University campus, educational Institutions and so on. I was surprised at the enormity of the undertakings of a single individual – Sri Sathya Sai Baba.  The environment was all very new to me. I hadn’t heard or read anything much about Sri Sathya Sai Baba before I had came to Parthi for the first time, to take my MBA entrance test. For how could I – without His willing? My only introduction to Bhagavan was Howard Murphet’s ‘Man of Miracles’, which had miraculously presented itself a couple of days before I started for Parthi. I had devoured the book in a single sitting. I was entranced by the phenomenon of an Avatar and I was now raring to go to Parthi.  The bus dropped me off in front of the Ashram, where friendly, good-natured Sevadals directed me to the accommodation office. Walking past the Sai Kulwant hall, I muttered with myself, “Will I ever be able to enter this magnificent, beautiful hall?” At that time, I didn’t even know that Bhagavan gives Darshan in that hall. If I had been tuned enough to Bhagavan at that time, I would probably have heard Him say, “Yes, yes, yes.”  I had done my graduation elsewhere before applying for an MBA degree in Bhagavan’s Institute. The contrast between the ‘outside’ world and the environment in Parthi was too glaring to miss my attention. I was really surprised that though I had been in the same state as He, and that too less than a day’s journey from Him, I hadn’t heard anything about Him or His wonderful temples of learning. It was only later, when I joined His Institute and learnt more about Him that I came to know that He has absolute control on who comes to Parthi and when. I heard that one could enter Parthi only when his/her time is ripe. I was happy my time had come – at last!  The admission went on quite smoothly. The message of Baba inscribed on the stone just outside the Institute, “Why fear when I am here?” kept ringing in my ears, as I took the test and it gave me great comfort. I found the teachers very different from the ones I had been previously exposed to. They showed genuine concern for the students. I took an immediate liking for the place, the teachers and everything else. I somehow felt that I belonged to this place and nowhere else.  As there were a couple of days after the entrance test before I would be personally interviewed, I decided to tour Parthi. So, with Murphet as my guide, I set off. I bowed reverence at Bhagavan’s parents’ Samadhi, walked wide – eyed and open – mouthed through the marvellous Eternal Heritage Museum, visited the Siva temple, the birthplace of the Avatar; trudged the sands of Chitravati; sandals in one hand and Murphet in another, reminiscing about those innumerable materialisations by Bhagavan in these holy sands. I had almost childishly hoped that I would ‘stumble’ on an idol created by Bhagavan in those yester years!  My treasure hunt ended fruitless, except, of course, for the treasures I had collected in my heart in the form of beautiful experiences. Having read that Bhagavan used to pluck out of season fruits for His devotees from a tamarind tree, aptly named Kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree), I fervently prayed that He pluck for me too, a fruit – a fruit of an ‘MBA seat’ in His Institute. That fateful evening, though I did not realise it then, Bhagavan did put the ‘fruit’ I had prayed for in one of my pockets.  My interview went off smoothly. I could feel His presence in the way answers flowed from me spontaneously. After the interview, I felt satisfied with my performance. Now I could only keep my fingers crossed and wait for the results. I came back home. The results were announced a few days later and I let out a yelp of joy when the person on the other end of the phone line confirmed that my name was on the selected candidates’ list.  For the second time in less than a fortnight, I was back in the bus, speeding towards Parthi. The bus seemed to be in good spirits, the way it overcame the hills and vales in between Parthi and me. “My good spirits seem to have rubbed off onto the bus,” I thought.  I landed in Parthi – this time as a proud student of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. I enrolled myself in the hostel and was warmly welcomed by the ever – pleasant warden.  Hostel life is full of beautiful experiences. It is verily the breeding ground for virtues and character. It is a laboratory where we practise what we learn in the Institute and the Mandir. The hostel schedule, packed with times for prayer, play and periods (for study) teaches the inmates how to manage time effectively, build up relationships, work as a team, learn to respect others’ feelings and so on.  Above everything, what makes a Sai Student’s life extra special is Bhagavan and the love that

What do you know of Me???

What do you know of Me??? Sitting under the nose of Bhagawan, seeing Him and listening to Him every day, or boasting of any type of acquaintance with the physical Divine, can anyone claim to have understood Him??? Living as contemporaries of this Supreme Avatar, if alone one understands the Truth that, He is Ram and i am His Hanuman, that, He is Allah and i am His Abdulla…in letter and spirit, then he is definitely on the right track… an introspective article by Sri PN Pal. “You wish to write a book about Me; what do you know of Me?” Baba asked Arnold Schulman this question. Yes. It is very true; we know, and can know only precious little of this most inscrutable, unprecedented Divine Phenomenon. Some of us pretend to have measured Him as a great spiritual force, as a great alchemist of character, as a great spiritual guide as the great popularises of the Advaitic doctrine of creation and liberation, and so on. There are many who snatch at opportunities to speak about Him, and hold forth for hours describing the miracles they and others have experienced, miracles which He Himself has described as `insignificant mosquitoes on the vast expanse of thick dermature which covers the elephant.” Many argue load and long to convince those who deny, doubt or denigrate these `incidents’, and feel happy if they win, for, they congratulate themselves on adding a few to the million admirers and adorers of Baba, as if, He needs the feeble support we give or the paltry conquests we accomplish. He has His plan, His ways, His means, His victories; ours are only exercises in egoism and futility. But, all who have come into His Presence know how gentle, how compassionate, how sweet He is in movement, speech and ministration. The moments of the delectable `interview’ are indeed a memory forever. There is no gainsaying that Baba instils in us the dignity of doing one’s duty – whatever it may be, high or low, difficult or delightful – and the necessity for putting into our task all the skill and intelligence, all the sincerity and steadfastness that He has endowed us with. From the discourses with which He inspires and instructs lakhs of ordinary men and women, from His lucid writings on Love, Wisdom, Righteousness, and other spiritual disciplines and from the directives He has outlined for the education of children, adolescents, and adults, one can realise that His main preoccupation is the re-establishment of Peace, through Love and Loving Service. While contemplating the compassion which Baba shows to us, in spite of our failings and faults, we have to admit that we have yet a long distance to traverse, before we can justify to ourselves the claim to be His devotees. We are still attached to flippant moments of fun and frolic. While trying to impress others by our eloquence and fervour, we do not examine ourselves in penitent moods that we are unworthy, of the rare privilege of being contemporaries of the Avatar of the Age, but yet, we bloat our achievements in Sadhana, and condemn others of sloth or worse, in the same breath. We form ourselves into Bhajan Mandalis and we adore Baba as the Embodiment of Love; but, we do not ask ourselves whether, in every transaction and dialogue, we saturate our deeds and words in that Divine Virtue, Love. We know that Baba wants us to practise Silence, as the most effective Sadhana; but, we persist in loud behaviour of all kinds. Our practice of Sadhana is, as most would agree, mere routine ritual, devoid of the ring of genuine thrill. Therefore, let us pray, “Lord! Save us from the pests of hurry and indecision, of complacency and conceit, of fanaticism and fear; enable us to earn a valid perspective of Life; give us the will and the chance to have quiet half-hours of relaxation and meditation on Thy glory and grace.” “Lord! Make us unafraid and happy. Give us the opportunity to do some one a good turn, and please do not allow the fact to be talked about. Give us the strength to bear the stings of malice and scorn, for, they too are Your gifts of grace; give us the courage to resist the pangs of passion and prejudice, for, they too are Your ways to toughen us. Give us, O Lord, the skill to enjoy the beautiful as Thy handiwork, to act courteously to all, as embodiments of Your Love, and to believe that whatever I give to the world is what I give to myself.”
