Jagannath Ashtakam कदाचित् कालिन्दी तट विपिन सङ्गीत तरलोमुदाभीरी नारी वदन कमला स्वाद मधुपःरमा शम्भु ब्रह्मामरपति गणेशार्चित पदोजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन पथ गामी भवतु मे ॥१॥ kadācit kālindī taṭa vipina saṅgīta taralomudābhīrī nārī vadana kamalā svāda madhupaḥramā śambhu brahmāmarapati gaṇeśārcita padojagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana patha gāmī bhavatu me ..1.. Sometimes in great happiness Lord Jagannatha, with his flute, makes a loud concert in the groves on the banks of the Yamuna. He is like a bumblebee who tastes the beautiful lotus-like faces of the cowherd damsels of Vraja, and his lotus feet are worshiped by Lakshmi, Siva, Brahma, Indra and Ganesa. May that lord be the object of my vision. भुजे सव्ये वेणुं शिरसि शिखिपिच्छं कटितटेदुकूलं नेत्रान्ते सहचर-कटाक्षं विदधते ।सदा श्रीमद्‍-वृन्दावन-वसति-लीला-परिचयोजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे ॥२॥ bhuje savye veṇuṃ śirasi śikhipicchaṃ kaṭitaṭedukūlaṃ netrānte sahacara-kaṭākṣaṃ vidadhate .sadā śrīmad-vṛndāvana-vasati-līlā-paricayojagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me ..2.. In his left hand Lord Jagannatha holds a flute. On his head he wears the feathers of peacocks and on his hips he wears fine yellow silken cloth. Out of the corners of his eyes he bestows sidelong glances upon his loving devotees and he always reveals himself through his pastimes in his divine abode of Vrindavana. Residing on the shore of the great ocean, within a large palace situated upon the crest of the brilliant, golden Nilacala Hill, along with his powerful brother Bala-bhadra, and in the middle of them his sister Subhadra, Lord Jagannatha bestows the opportunity for devotional service upon all godly souls. May that lord be the object of my vision. कृपा पारावारः सजल जलद श्रेणिरुचिरोरमा वाणी रामः स्फुरद् अमल पङ्केरुहमुखः ।सुरेन्द्रैर् आराध्यः श्रुतिगण शिखा गीत चरितोजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन पथ गामी भवतु मे ॥४॥ kṛpā pārāvāraḥ sajala jalada śreṇiruciroramā vāṇī rāmaḥ sphurad amala paṅkeruhamukhaḥ .surendrair ārādhyaḥ śrutigaṇa śikhā gīta caritojagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana patha gāmī bhavatu me ..4.. Lord Jagannatha is an ocean of mercy and he is beautiful like a row of blackish rain clouds. he is the storehouse of bliss for Lakshmi and Saraswati, and his face is like a spotless full-blown lotus. He is worshiped by the best of demigods and sages, and his glories are sung by the Upanishads. May that lord be the object of my vision. रथारूढो गच्छन् पथि मिलित भूदेव पटलैःस्तुति प्रादुर्भावम् प्रतिपदमुपाकर्ण्य सदयः ।दया सिन्धुर्बन्धुः सकल जगतां सिन्धु सुतयाजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन पथ गामी भवतु मे ॥५॥ rathārūḍho gacchan pathi milita bhūdeva paṭalaiḥstuti prādurbhāvam pratipadamupākarṇya sadayaḥ .dayā sindhurbandhuḥ sakala jagatāṃ sindhu sutayājagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana patha gāmī bhavatu me ..5.. When Lord Jagannatha is on his Ratha-yatra cart and is moving along the road, at every step there is prayers and songs chanted by large assemblies of brahmanas. hearing their hymns Lord Jagannatha is very favorably disposed towards them. He is the ocean of mercy and the true friend of all the worlds. May that lord, along with his consort Lakshmi, who was born from the ocean of nectar, be the object of my vision. परंब्रह्मापीड़ः कुवलय-दलोत्‍फुल्ल-नयनोनिवासी नीलाद्रौ निहित-चरणोऽनन्त-शिरसि ।रसानन्दी राधा-सरस-वपुरालिङ्गन-सुखोजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथगामी भवतु मे ॥६॥ parambrahmāpīr̤aḥ kuvalaya-dalotphulla-nayanonivāsī nīlādrau nihita-caraṇo’nanta-śirasi .rasānandī rādhā-sarasa-vapurāliṅgana-sukhojagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-pathagāmī bhavatu me ..6.. He is the ornament of the head of Lord Brahma and his eyes are like the full-blown petals of the lotus. He resides on the Nilacala Hill, and his lotus feet are placed on the heads of Ananta Deva. Lord Jagannatha is overwhelmed by the mellow of love and he becomes joyful in the embracing of the body of Sri Radharani, which is like a cool pond. May that lord be the object of my vision. न वै याचे राज्यं न च कनक माणिक्य विभवंन याचेऽहं रम्यां सकल जन काम्यां वरवधूम् ।सदा काले काले प्रमथ पतिना गीतचरितोजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन पथ गामी भवतु मे ॥७॥ na vai yāce rājyaṃ na ca kanaka māṇikya vibhavaṃna yāce’haṃ ramyāṃ sakala jana kāmyāṃ varavadhūm .sadā kāle kāle pramatha patinā gītacaritojagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana patha gāmī bhavatu me ..7.. I do not pray for a kingdom, nor for gold, rubies, and wealth. I do not ask for an excellent and beautiful wife as desired by all men. I simply pray that lord, whose glories are always sung by Lord Siva, be the constant object of my vision. हर त्वं संसारं द्रुततरम् असारं सुरपतेहर त्वं पापानां विततिम् अपरां यादवपते ।अहो दीनेऽनाथे निहित चरणो निश्चितमिदंजगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन पथ गामी भवतु मे ॥८॥ hara tvaṃ saṃsāraṃ drutataram asāraṃ surapatehara tvaṃ pāpānāṃ vitatim aparāṃ yādavapate .aho dīne’nāthe nihita caraṇo niścitamidaṃjagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana patha gāmī bhavatu me ..8.. O Lord of the demigods, please quickly remove this useless material existence I am undergoing. O Lord of the Yadus, please destroy this vast ocean of sins which has no shore. Alas, this is certain that Lord Jagannatha’s lotus feet are bestowed upon those who feel themselves fallen and have no shelter in this world but Him. May that lord be the object of my vision. इति श्रीमद् शङ्कराचार्यप्रणीतं जगन्नाथाष्टकं सम्पूर्णं॥जगन्नाथाष्टकं पुन्यं यः पठेत् प्रयतः शुचिः ।सर्वपाप विशुद्धात्मा विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति ॥९॥ iti śrīmad śaṅkarācāryapraṇītaṃ jagannāthāṣṭakaṃ sampūrṇaṃ..jagannāthāṣṭakaṃ punyaṃ yaḥ paṭhet prayataḥ śuciḥ .sarvapāpa viśuddhātmā viṣṇulokaṃ sa gacchati ..9.. This is the completion of the Jagannatha Ashtakam by Srimad Shankaracharya.The self-retrained, virtuous soul who recites these eight verses glorifying Lord Jagannatha becomes cleansed of all sins and duly proceeds to Lord Visnu’s abode. Description Shri Jagannath Ashtakam was composed by Adi Sankracharya in praise of Lord Jagannath on his visit to Puri. The merit of reciting the sacred Jagannath ashtakam carefully is such that, one becomes sinless and pure hearted and gains entrance to Vishnuloka. In this poem, Shankaracharya sees Jagannath as Krishna, adored by Gopikas and as Vishnu, served by all demi Gods. He prays that Jagannath Swami, who resides in a palace on the golden Nilachala hill on the shore of the great sea with his powerful brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra

Bala Mukundashtakam करारविन्देन पदारविन्दं मुखारविन्दे विनिवेशयन्तम् ।वटस्य पत्रस्य पुटे शयानं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ १॥ karāravindena padāravindaṃ mukhāravinde viniveśayantamvaṭasya patrasya puṭe śayānaṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam who with his lotus-like hands holds his lotus-like feet and puts the toe in his lotus-like mouth. He rests on the fold of the banyan leaf. My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam. संहृत्य लोकान्वटपत्रमध्ये शयानमाद्यन्तविहीनरूपम् ।सर्वेश्वरं सर्वहितावतारं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ २॥ saṃhṛtya lokān vaṭapatra madhye śayānam ādyanta vihīnarūpamsarveśvaraṃ sarvahitāvatāraṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam who draws the entire world within the banyan leaf, who rests there in a form without beginning or end, who is the lord of all and whose incarnation is for the welfare of all. इन्दीवरश्यामलकोमलाङ्गं इन्द्रादिदेवार्चितपादपद्मम् ।सन्तानकल्पद्रुममाश्रितानां बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ ३॥ indīvaraśyāmala komalāṅgaṃ indrādi devārcita pādapadmamsantāna kalpadrumam āśritānāṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam whose tender body is dark like a blue lotus, whose lotus feet are worshipped by Indra and other gods, and who is the wish-fulfilling tree for those who take refuge in him. लम्बालकं लम्बितहारयष्टिं श‍ृङ्गारलीलाङ्कितदन्तपङ्क्तिम् ।बिंबाधरं चारुविशालनेत्रं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ ४॥ lambālakaṃ lambita hārayaṣṭiṃ śṛṅgāra līlāṅkita danta paṅktimbimbādharaṃ cāru viśāla netraṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam with long curly hair and a hanging garland, whose teeth show a playful charming smile, whose lips are like bimba fruits and whose eyes are wide and beautiful. शिक्ये निधायाद्यपयोदधीनि बहिर्गतायां व्रजनायिकायाम् ।भुक्त्वा यथेष्टं कपटेन सुप्तं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ ५॥ śikye nidhāya ādyapayo dadhīni bahirgatāyāṃ vrajanāyikāyāmbhuktvā yatheṣṭaṃ kapaṭena suptaṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam who steals milk and curd from hanging pots when the women of Vraja go out, eats them to his heart’s content, and then pretends to sleep. कलिन्दजान्तस्थितकालियस्य फणाग्ररङ्गे नटनप्रियन्तम् ।तत्पुच्छहस्तं शरदिन्दुवक्त्रं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ ६॥ kalindajā anta sthita kāliyasya phaṇāgra raṅge naṭana priyantamtat puccha hastaṃ śarad indu vaktraṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam who joyfully danced on the hoods of the Kaliya serpent in the Yamuna river, holding its tail, his face shining like the autumn moon. उलूखले बद्धमुदारशौर्यं उत्तुङ्गयुग्मार्जुन भङ्गलीलम् ।उत्फुल्लपद्मायत चारुनेत्रं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ ७॥ ulūkhale baddham udāra śauryaṃ uttuṅga yugma arjuna bhaṅga līlamutphulla padma āyata cāru netraṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam who, though tied to a mortar, displayed great heroism and uprooted the twin Arjuna trees, his eyes wide and beautiful like fully bloomed lotus petals. आलोक्य मातुर्मुखमादरेण स्तन्यं पिबन्तं सरसीरुहाक्षम् ।सच्चिन्मयं देवमनन्तरूपं बालं मुकुन्दं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ ८॥ ālokya mātur mukham ādareṇa stanyaṃ pibantaṃ sarasīru hākṣamsaccinmayaṃ devam ananta rūpaṃ bālaṃ mukundaṃ manasā smarāmi My mind remembers that beautiful Bala Mukundam who lovingly looks at his mother’s face while drinking her milk, whose eyes are like lotuses, whose divine form is pure consciousness and infinite. इति बालमुकुन्दाष्टकम् सम्पूर्णम् iti bāla mukundāṣṭakam sampūrṇam

Adau Devaki Devi आदौ देवकि देवि गर्भ जननं गोपीगृहे वर्धनंमायापूतन जीवितापहरणं गोवर्धनोद्धारणम् ।कंसच्छेदन कौरवादि हननं कुंतीसुतां पालनंएतद् भागवतं पुराणकथितं श्रीकृष्ण लीलामृतम् ।। ādau devaki devi garbha jananaṃ gopīgṛhe vardhanaṃmāyāpūtana jīvitāpaharaṇaṃ govardhanoddhāraṇam .kaṃsacchedana kauravādi hananaṃ kuṃtīsutāṃ pālanaṃetad bhāgavataṃ purāṇakathitaṃ śrīkṛṣṇa līlāmṛtam .. Commencing with birth from Devaki, growing in the house of gopis, taking away the life of Poothana, lifting the Govardhana, killing Kamsa, annihilating the Kauravas, protecting the sons of Kunti, this is the traditionally related Bhagavata – the nectar of the wonderful and pleasing acts of Sri Krishna. Achyutashtakam अच्युतं केशवं रामनारायणं कृष्णदामोदरं वासुदेवं हरिम् ।श्रीधरं माधवं गोपिकावल्लभं जानकीनायकं रामचन्द्रं भजे ॥ १॥ acyutam keśavam rāmanārāyaṇam kṛṣṇadāmodaram vāsudevam harimśrīdharam mādhavam gopikā vallabham jānakī nāyakam rāmacandram bhaje I sing in praise of Ramachandra, who is known as Achyuta (infallible), Keshava, Rama, Narayana, Krishna, Damodara, Vasudeva, Hari, Shridhara, Madhava, Gopikavallabha and Janakinayaka. अच्युतं केशवं सत्यभामाधवं माधवं श्रीधरं राधिकाराधितम् ।इन्दिरामन्दिरं चेतसा सुन्दरं देवकीनन्दनं नन्दनं सन्दधे ॥ २॥ acyutam keśavam satyabhāmādhavam mādhavam śrīdharam rādhikārādhitamindirā mandiram cetasā sundaram devakī nandanam nandanam sandadhe I offer my salutations to Achyuta, known as Keshava, the beloved of Satyabhama, Madhava, Shridhar, worshipped by Radhika, abode of Lakshmi, beautiful in heart, son of Devaki and dear to all. विष्णवे जिष्णवे शङ्खिने चक्रिणे रुक्मिणीरागिणे जानकीजानये ।वल्लवीवल्लभायाऽर्चितायात्मने कंसविध्वंसिने वंशिने ते नमः ॥ ३॥ viṣṇave jiṣṇave śaṅkhine cakriṇe rukmiṇī rāgiṇe jānakī jānayevallavī vallabhāyārcitāyātmane kaṃsa vidhvaṃsine vaṃśine te namaḥ Salutations to Vishnu, the conqueror, holder of conch and discus, beloved of Rukmini, consort of Janaki, beloved of the gopis, destroyer of Kamsa and divine flute-player. कृष्ण गोविन्द हे राम नारायण श्रीपते वासुदेवाजित श्रीनिधे ।अच्युतानन्त हे माधवाधोक्षज द्वारकानायक द्रौपदीरक्षक ॥ ४॥ kṛṣṇa govinda he rāma nārāyaṇa śrīpate vāsudevājita śrīnidheacyutānanta he mādhavādhokṣaja dvārakānāyaka draupadī rakṣaka O Krishna, Govinda, Rama, Narayana, Lord of Lakshmi, eternal Achyuta, Madhava, Adhokshaja, king of Dwaraka and protector of Draupadi. राक्षसक्षोभितः सीतया शोभितो दण्डकारण्यभूपुण्यताकारणः ।लक्ष्मणेनान्वितो वानरैः सेवितोऽगस्त्यसम्पूजितो राघवः पातु माम् ॥ ५॥ rākṣasakṣobhitaḥ sītayā śobhito daṇḍakāraṇya bhū puṇyatā kāraṇaḥlakṣmaṇenānvito vānaraiḥ sevito’gastya sampūjito rāghavaḥ pātu mām May Raghava, destroyer of demons, adorned by Sita, purifier of Dandaka forest, accompanied by Lakshmana and served by vanaras, protect me. धेनुकारिष्टकोऽनिष्टकृद्द्वेषिणां केशिहा कंसहृद्वंशिकावादकः ।पूतनाकोपकः सूरजाखेलनो बालगोपालकः पातु माम् सर्वदा ॥ ६॥ dhenukāriṣṭako’niṣṭa kṛddveṣiṇām keśihā kaṃsa hṛd vaṃśikāvādakaḥpūtanākopakaḥ sūrajā khelano bāla gopālakaḥ pātu mām sarvadā May child Gopala, destroyer of demons, slayer of Kesi and Kamsa, flute-player and protector, save me always. विद्युदुद्योतवत्प्रस्फुरद्वाससं प्रावृडम्भोदवत्प्रोल्लसद्विग्रहम् ।वन्यया मालया शोभितोरःस्थलं लोहिताङ्घ्रिद्वयं वारिजाक्षं भजे ॥ ७॥ vidyududyotavat prasphurad vāsasam prāvṛḍ ambhodavat prollasadvigrahamvanyayā mālayā śobhitoraḥsthalam lohitāṅghridvayam vārijākṣam bhaje I worship the lotus-eyed Lord, radiant like lightning, cloud-hued, adorned with forest garlands and copper-red feet. कुञ्चितैः कुन्तलैर्भ्राजमानाननं रत्नमौलिं लसत्कुण्डलं गण्डयोः ।हारकेयूरकं कङ्कणप्रोज्ज्वलं किङ्किणीमञ्जुलं श्यामलं तं भजे ॥ ८॥ kuñcitaiḥ kuntalair bhrājamānānanam ratna maulim lasat kuṇḍalam gaṇḍayoḥhāra keyūrakam kaṅkaṇa projjvalam kiṅkiṇī mañjulam śyāmalam tam bhaje I worship Shyama, whose face shines with curly locks, jeweled crown, radiant ornaments and melodious anklets. अच्युतस्याष्टकं यः पठेदिष्टदं प्रेमतः प्रत्यहं पुरुषः सस्पृहम् ।वृत्ततः सुन्दरं कर्तृ विश्वम्भरस्तस्य वश्यो हरिर्जायते सत्वरम् ॥ ९॥ acyutasyāṣṭakam yaḥ paṭhed iṣṭadam premataḥ pratyaham puruṣaḥ saspṛhamvṛttataḥ sundaram kartṛ viśvambharas tasya vaśyo harir jāyate satvaram Whoever recites this Achyutashtakam daily with devotion attains the grace of Lord Hari quickly. इति श्रीशङ्कराचार्यविरचितम् अच्युताष्टकं सम्पूर्णम् Achyutashtakam, composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, is a devotional hymn praising Lord Krishna and Lord Rama, highlighting the divine names and incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
