Women and Virtue

The Role of Women in the Home…

The Role of Women in the Home… A happy home is where peace prevails between wife and husband…where life goes smooth with greater understanding. What is the role of a woman at home, and how best one can contribute in making it a “Sweet Home”? Mrs. Ganga Indira Pidatala from Hyderabad, India shares her views with invaluable tips given by Bhagawan in the interview room. Read on… This story was narrated by our beloved Bhagawan to a group of devotees at an interview. “Long ago there lived a saint called Tulsidas in the Maratha region. One day, he was sitting at home working on some verses that he was composing. (It was a bright day?). Suddenly, he called out to his wife and asked her to bring him a lantern. His wife calmly nodded her head and went into the house, where she lit up a lantern and brought it to her husband, who then asked her to place it on the desk. Tulsidas then looked at her for a moment and said,”Take it back! I don’t need it now.” His wife once again nodded her head and dutifully took the lantern back into the house.” Swami, without completing the story suddenly looked up at a couple of us and asked, “If your husbands had asked you to do the same, how would you have responded?” Without waiting for our reply, Swami then changed the tone of His voice, and imitated that we would have resorted to jumping, frowning, sneering and attacking our husbands saying, “Are you blind? It is broad daylight, why do you need a lantern? You must have gone mad! Crazy fellow, Go get it yourself, if you want one.” Swami continued imitating our response with “Can’t you see, I have been busy since morning taking care of your home, your kids and cooking food for you!” Isn’t it so? Swami asked us. We smiled meekly. You know us too well Baba, we thought. Then, Swami went on to elaborate that education today calls for equality among all human beings. It is true that men and women are equal but, each one has an important role to play in their own lives. Understanding this is the foundation needed for a happy life to be led between a husband and wife. Each one feels “Why should I do this? Why can’t he do it?” or vice versa. This is the thought that goes through our minds immediately when we are tired of doing something. From this thought erupts confrontation which leads to heated arguments, finally resulting in a rupture of family togetherness. Swami said that the reason we are seeing so many divorces, and disharmony among families, husbands and wives today, is because of mis-understandings. If one is able to adjust and understand one another on all counts, then there would not be any need for family courts at all! On another occasion, Swami advised me on my marriage to my husband, Gopi. He said that as a follower of Sai, I should bring a good name to the home I was born in and also to my new home: that is the home of my in-laws where I shall be living for the rest of my life. Swami said that most daughters feel that when they go to their in-laws place they lose their status as daughters, that they enjoyed back at home. On this aspect, He remarked that when you are entering your new home as a daughter-in-law, it is according to the law that you are entering your new home as a daughter. Behave like a daughter in your new home. Your love will definitely triumph and give you the status of the daughter that you feel that you might have lost! At this point, I would also like to share a few thoughts that Swami had given to my husband and me too soon after our marriage that could be of some interest to the readers. Swami told my husband Gopi, that trouble in a family erupts only when there is an involvement of the husband and the wife, with tempers riding high on both sides. Swami continued to demonstrate this point by telling us to imagine that each of our hands symbolized the husband and wife. At this point Swami clapped His hands.”CLAP” came the sound. Then, He set aside His left hand and tried to clap. There was no sound but, a wave of cool breeze. So, when both hands meet there is a loud noise indicating trouble. However, when only one hand is swinging, there was a cool breeze and no sound. Similarly, in our lives, when there is a difference of opinion between a wife and husband, if one is patient when the other is in a bad mood, there is no chance of fights breaking out at all. So, be cool and understanding. Don’t add fuel by showing your temper where there is fire already operating. If you don’t do this, your home will burn! Swami advised that instead of flaring up, we should keep quiet for some time and let the reigning temper mellow down. This will definitely help in controlling the situation. He further advised us that happiness and peace in a family will rule only when the lady of the home is happy and it is the duty of all the other members of the home, be it the husband or the children to bring in this atmosphere by reducing the amount of tension, and stress to the lady of the home.Swami went on to elaborate that Marriage is basically a matter of understanding each other and nothing more than that … Today, in this vibrant world of downward plunge of ethics and values,  the gospel of our beloved Mother Sai with regards to marriage is nothing but a greatest upadesa to make us lead lives of Happiness and Peace. These thoughts have made me realise that a home of happiness, bliss, harmony and peace lies in

Water For The Parched Throats…

Water For The Parched Throats… Water For The Parched ThIf you have known a parched throat, acute dehydration and overwhelming thirst on a blistering summer day, you will understand another’s craving for a few drops of water. Come summer, there are many many wandering ‘souls’ with parched throats, dying for a drop of water. An inspirational piece exhortation, asking fellow devotees to do the least bit for the four legged and winged ones of Beloved Mother Sai… (courtesy: Sri Sathya Sai News Letter – Pune) Temperatures are soaring; the rays of the Sun are getting more scorching and intense, leading to that ordeal of a parched, thirsty feeling that seeks appeasement urgently. And so, come summer, there are many water supply projects at various places to cater to the needs of thirsty travellers, wherein volunteers willingly and lovingly distribute this most precious liquid with a smiling ‘SaiRam’. Water crystals are transformed into Prasadam! However, what about animals and birds…four legged, tailed or winged children of Beloved Mother Sai…who can’t express how thirsty they are…and so, silently face the harsh heat and severe dehydration? Veterinary doctors have sadly expressed how so many birds and animals collapse due to heat strokes. Deeply understanding and keeping in mind their pressing need, we should keep bowls of water for birds, dogs, cattle, etc…a project that should conjoin supply of drinking water for human beings. This loving service would have a wider reach if some of us could keep bowls of water near our homes – in the balcony or in the garden, going a step further to convincingly request shop owners in the vicinity or those that are doing business in areas that are frequented, to do so too. How many more souls would be benefitted! Water bowls can be cemented into the earth and then on all we need to do is refill the bowls with fresh water. “Whosoever extends a hand to quench the thirst of another, especially the craving of those fellow beings that cannot help themselves, immense is the grace and manifold the blessings that descend to envelope such a sensitive soul.” Besides, myriad are the forms Sai Narayana assumes to give us an opportunity to serve Him. Come let us rise to the occasion. Water is the elixir of life…let all forms of life have easy access to this elixir! (We have personally experienced this a few summers ago, when a pair of bulbuls flew into the society compound…into a room that serves as an office. One could clearly make out they were very thirsty…and they seemed very flustered too. Our Vet advised us about ‘heat stroke’ for birds – cool place for rest and some water. They were kept within the enclosure they had flown into…for the night, along with a bowl of water and some seeds of grain. They had perched themselves on a picture of Swami. The room was properly ventilated and secured to keep cats out. Next morning, as we opened the door, much to our relief, they flew away to freedom! As of now, innumerable birds, dogs, cats come along to the bowls kept in our society. It is a pleasure, so refreshing a sight, to see the birds satiate their thirst, play in the water and stay around to chirp melodiously, so too, to silently watch the animals as they sip away and sometimes even sit or take a dip in the water container!) Why Do Seva For Animals?

Why Do Seva For Animals? If man believes in the Fatherhood Of God, then he is bound to follow His precept “All Are One…” fulfilling His dictum per word, acting upon it by being “Alike To Everyone…” Quoting Bhagawan’s precious gems on service to the co-inhabiting world of creatures, Late Ms. Mercini Sheratt, a champion animal lover who tirelessly worked for the co-existing world of varied lives, writes about the supreme significance of doing service to this special world of beings. After a glorious earthly sojourn carrying a precious heart filled with Love All Serve All… Help Ever Hurt Never, this Champion Crusader of the muted ones travelled back to The Source last year… merging at Bhagawan’s Divine Lotus Feet. Mercini has ever been our constant inspiration, for this particular section of The Prasanthi Reporter. Honouring SSIO’s crusade for Animal Love, with its SERVE THE PLANET being named after animals under the title – LOVE FOR ANIMALS… we continue with our series from Prasanthi Nilayam, carrying on ‘being’ their voice.  “Foster the tiny seed of Love that clings to ‘me’ and ‘mine’, let it sprout into Love for the group around you, and grow into Love for all mankind, and spread out its branches over animals, birds, and those that creep and crawl, and let the Love enfold all things and all beings in all the worlds.  Proceed from less Love to more Love, narrow Love to expanded Love.” (Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 8, ch. 16) Once, when presented with seva projects for human beings, Bhagawan said: “What about the animals?  They need help too.  My love embraces the animal kingdom as well as the human kingdom and so should yours……….it should not just be limited to human beings.” (source: Dr. Narendranath Reddy,UK medical conference, September 2011).  To another devotee, He has said, “Real Seva is animal seva”. Bhagawan tells us that we can learn many good qualities from our animal friends and below, you can see a remarkable act of kindness by one of them: “Two blind people wanted to drink water at the RagiGudda temple, Bangalore. When they were unable to operate the tap, this mother monkey opened the tap for them, allowed them to drink water, drank some water herself and then closed the tap before leaving the scene.”  (extract from an Indian newspaper) Please note well!  If a monkey can do this act of kindness for human beings, then can’t we humans also do this for our animal brothers and sisters?  Many people do feed stray animals and wild creatures and birds,  while many more never think of it…………..but hey, what a shining example this monkey is to the human beings who don’t ……she is clearly not ‘speciest’ like many humans or prejudiced against members of other species in need. No life can be sustained without water or food.  This applies to all life forms and while humans suffer terribly when they do not have enough water to drink or food to eat, so do our fellow creatures……..especially in extreme weather conditions such as the intense and simmering summer heat of summer or freezing winter. And the love and care that we give towards those in animal form is never wasted for the same atma flows through us all.    As Bhagawan says: “When you love and look after an animal, you help to lift the whole of creation.  If you cannot care for an animal, then at least feed the birds and wild creatures.” (‘Sathya Sai Speaks’ – vol 10/ch 36) While they may not be able to thank us in words, those who have fed and cared for animals, wild or domestic,  have often experienced their loving gratitude in other ways.  Our love attracts their love and helps us to realise the Oneness behind all forms. A small example of this occurred at the time of the passing away of Lawrence Anthony, a highly regarded and remarkable conservationist and environmentalist who could communicate heart to heart with elephants.  He had been particularly successful in taming and ‘normalising’ a herd of wild, traumatised and rogue elephants, ‘delinquents, every one of them’ in Zululand, South Africa.  Although he had not seen the elephants for 15 months as he had had to distance them for their own safety, on the day that he died without warning in March 2012, the whole herd appeared out of nowhere and stood silently outside his house as if to pay homage to the human being who had so loved and understood them.  We know that elephants mourn their loved ones and to them, he had become a beloved family member. Somehow, on their jungle telegraph, they had intuited that he had passed away. A kind and loving soul who has kept a small animal sanctuary for years told me the following story:  Alerted by her dog’s barking one day, she found a wounded baby pigeon beside him which had fallen out of a tree.  She rescued and hand reared it while it lived with her and her other pets for about five weeks……………..then one day, it was ready to leave and join others of its kind. For 4 years it lived freely, often in her garden.  She could tell which pigeon it was because it recognised its name and was not afraid of her dog, with whom it had lived before.  Then one day, it appeared at her patio door, very sick, walked in, greeted her, the dog and the resident crow in turn and then went into its old cage which was still there. It settled down and the next day, quietly passed away.  It had come home to die where it knew it was loved and safe.   A few days before it reappeared, she saw the outline of a pigeon on her window pane………..photo below………..rather like an angel bird……………perhaps an omen of what was to come. An old neighbour of mine used to feed some badgers every night, as indeed many people do……….and I know, because I saw it with my

Woman – The Pillar Of A Value Based Society

Woman – The Pillar Of A Value Based Society As a precursor to the celebration of the Sacred Day of Advent, in honour of and to recognise the contribution of women, Beloved Mother Sai declared 19th November to be respectfully and joyfully observed as Ladies Day. The above lines are a tribute to all feminine beings in creation…winged, finned, four and two legged. May they know in some unique way that their presence and essence is being appreciated and applauded. A reflective article by Sri Jullie Chaudhuri. Made in the image of Shakti,So empowered instinctively and energised dynamically,To fulfil her supreme purpose –To establish and sustain all around harmony…Born to remove any and every kind of woe,Woman is a symbol of all things human……personifying Grace and Quality –Woman is the true pillar of a value based society! Women are the makers of the home, the nation and the world. – Baba Creation and Creativity.  Man and Woman are so created to complement each other. In alignment, each has their function to perform and while doing so rhythmically, in resonance with the Divine Plan, together they form a whole. To build something one needs a sturdy foundation. Then on, to support any structure one requires powerful pillars. That foundation…that support…that power of creation and creativity has been bestowed upon every woman! She embodies infinity, she characterises eternal qualities and exuding all this positively, she quite compellingly impacts eternity. There is nothing in this world that women cannot achieve. – Baba A society is made up of innumerable individuals, families, people from different walks of life…an intermingling of colours and flavours…strata and status…faiths, views, beliefs, cultures and economics ever so diverse. Doesn’t it all need a binding thread? And much more significantly, don’t these individuals have their origin in the womb of a woman?Ethics is what makes a society thrive…and a woman of quality who believes in equality has it in her to uphold and make these ethics come alive. Only if the women come up in society, the whole world will turn sacred. – Baba A woman is born to play myriad roles: a daughter, a sister, a friend, a wife…integrating acts which continue on even after marriage while cementing new associations…and even as she plays out these roles she constantly exudes the highest undertaking – that of a Mother. Whether she goes on to have a child or not, every woman is a born mother, her mission intrinsically is that of a mother…a tender caregiver. She is blessed with many hidden facets along with a natural flair for compassion, care, concern, nursing, making amends, giving, forgiving, bringing together, blending, and harmonizing. She simply needs to be mindful, centred and receptive and tune in as she experiences this adventurous expedition called – Life. As a daughter she puts her parents on a pedestal, reveres them, yet, gives gentle guidance whenever necessary. As a sister, friend, colleague, teacher she will not hesitate to step in, once again channelizing righteousness. However, what about her role as a Mother? Upon the female of any species, whether amongst the animal, winged and aquatic or humankind, lies the singular onus of rearing the newly born. Most often, especially in all other species, she patiently rears the young ones all on her own – protecting, nourishing, nurturing, freeing. Freeing subtly, gently, firmly refers to demonstrating, drilling, inculcating ‘Life Skills’.In the animal kingdom, in their natural wild habitat, these skills take on a different meaning altogether from what it denotes in the more complex kingdom of man.Deep is the innate responsibility of the woman, of the human mother, to inculcate moral codes, basic principles and behavioural conducts. Children are not only the future citizens of the globe, but they are the inheritors of all the natural resources, the vast mineral wealth, the magnificent hills and lush plains, the grand glaciers, refreshing rivers and gushing streams, the surging seas and mysterious oceans, the dense forests, the exotic flora and wondrous fauna…and as such they grow up to become the custodians of all the abundance, the keepers of Mother Earth. Intuitively keeping in focus this salient truth, women as mothers, aunts, grandmothers not only do all they can to promote the physical wellbeing of their children but they foster the mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual progress too, equipping them with ethics that will regulate the flow of their conscience, consciousness and overall growth. Women embody the aspect of Mother Nature and the ancient sages found solutions to problems in life by recognising this truth. – Baba Woman and Poise. When there is accord between the heart and the mind there is an inner harmony. The world is raging with unrest for the poise within is lost. Desires and greed are drawing, dragging, and clasping humans and humanity into the dark fathomless maelstrom of no return. It is imperative that a balance be restored and a vital equilibrium maintained. The world needs beautiful minds. The inherent feminine qualities need to come to the rescue. Outer beauty is of no worth if not accompanied by a beautiful mind ensuring not only positive thoughts, words and deeds but a synchronicity between them. Women are the heirs of our ancient culture. Culture means refinement.Women are the torch-bearers of refinement and they are toiling for the emancipation of the nation.  – Baba Woman and Love. Temperatures are soaring, rivers are going dry leaving the soil ever so arid…for there is no love left in the human heart.  Women are naturally conditioned to love unconditionally for that is their inborn motherly instinct. They excel at it. As mothers, they are the first guru, guide and teacher of their children assisting them to consciously be aware, beware of unfavourable influences, trust the inner voice and evolve. This process of learning all things wise and wonderful, of loving and being exposed to the human values of Sathya, Dharma, Prema, Shanti, Ahimsa…of loving selflessly begins in the womb itself. Women have satvaguna in ample measure. They are by nature helpful, tender, compassionate, humble and trustful. – Baba Woman and Values.

What We Eat Creates The World Around Us…

What We Eat Creates The World Around Us… When one delves deep into His teachings, what our Beloved Bhagawan has professed, what emerges out are pearls of wisdom along with profound revelations galore, asking man to mend and amend. Ms. Mercini Sheratt’s passion and love for His Teachings help us to unearth some of the most relevant facts and truths… especially in the area of vegetarianism and love for animal kingdom. Read on… (Late Ms. Mercini Sheratt from the United Kingdom was a champion animal lover who tirelessly worked for the co-existing world of varied lives, following Bhagawan’s Teachings) True to the famous Biblical saying, … ‘as you sow so shall you reap’ (for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap) and true to the epochal scientific invention of Newton’s Third Law that declares, ‘for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction’, in this vast world of multitudes of beings… in millions, billions and gazillions… and ‘infinitely’ more, man, who is rated intellectually the best,  is bound by karmic pronouncements for every single action he undertakes. He is bound by karmic pronouncements until that day, when a shift of consciousness comes upon him, dawning the wisdom that ‘he is not the doer’, and there is a ‘Higher Self’ That is in action. Living out the most ordinary way, at a time when Age Kali is raging with fierce passion, where does he, man, stand today? Leaving the rest, when talking about ‘him and his’ from the  context of vegetarianism, contrary to what most he has been conditioned to believe, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba exhorts that: “Animals did not come for the purpose of supplying food for human beings. They came to work out their own lives in the world. When a human being is dead, the foxes and other animals may eat, but we have not come to provide food for those that eat the dead body; we have not come for that purpose. Similarly, man eats the animal but the animal has not come to provide man with food.” (Conversations With Sathya Sai Baba) One so often hears that ‘it is only natural’ to eat meat. The habit is so ingrained and so ancient that most people never think to question the fact that animals might actually have another purpose in incarnating other than providing fodder for human beings. Anyone who thinks otherwise is liable to be dismissed as a sentimental fool. The fact that farm animals form lifelong friendships and deep attachments shows us at least one example of other reasons for incarnating, even though one could say they would not be here at all were it not for the fact that they have been bred for the food chain. Another surprising reason is the fate of the animals consumed. – Something that would literally astonish most of us. It is as follows: “Man consumes as food many living beings. These are born as human beings, on account of this act of consumption.  But since they have not had the education which can reveal the God within, they vegetate or stay brutish, without appropriate ticket or passport for rising higher than the human status in which they have been hurriedly placed. Like most men, they roll along from womb to tomb, bond slaves to the senses and the ills that the bondage inevitably brings in its train.” (Sathya Sai Speaks-12) “For the purpose of feeding ourselves, many lives are being sacrificed. Because these various living things are being sacrificed and are merging with human beings, they have also been acquiring human lives in their rebirth.  None of these jivas is getting any chance of rising higher than human lives. The entire life is being spent in making an effort to be reborn after one’s death, thus repeating the cycle of birth and death.” (Summer Showers in Brindavan’ 1974) Whoever would have thought that the souls of creatures whose flesh is eaten by mankind would then be embodied into a human form long before they were ready to behave in a truly human manner! Remember, according to Sri Sathya Sai Baba, a human being should be a truly noble creature. He tells us how hard it is to acquire a human form, what a great opportunity it is, and how even angels would love to have one! Yet, in the case of animals who ‘provide’ food for humans, the whole situation is reversed. And while they achieve a human vehicle far too early in their evolution, they cannot benefit from it, nor apparently, ever attain self-realisation through it. So not only do we deprive them of an conscious evolution and eventual liberation once in a human form, we also sentence them to aeons of lives lived miserably. One could also wonder whether some of the less than noble behaviour demonstrated in this Kali era can be explained thus. Meat-eating not only adversely effects the meat-eater, making it more difficult for him or her to truly rise spiritually, although there are no doubt exceptions to this, it also adversely affects the creature eaten, not just in the sense of the suffering caused at the time, but by interfering with its natural evolutionary progress. When human heart declines to promote righteous action, it results in individual and societal degeneration. From this point of view the profundity of the following  statements demands earnest human attention: “He demeans himself by his evil habits. He kills animals and eats their flesh. When individuals take to evil ways, the entire society degenerates.” (Sathya Sai Speaks-13) And the epochal Indian epic with cosmic profundity  Srimad Bhagavatam of the lore speaks thus: “To be non-violent to human beings and to be a killer or enemy of poor animals is satan’s (devil) philosophy. In this age, there is always enmity against poor animals and therefore the poor creatures are always anxious. The reaction of poor animals is being forced upon human society and therefore there is always the strain of cold or hot war between men, individually, collectively or nationally.” Sadly, it seems nothing has changed, and there

Sri Krishna Chaitanya and the thief…

Sri Krishna Chaitanya and the thief… In the company of the holy ones, one acquires the wealth of God-Remembrance and along with this exercise comes an inner transformation. Valmiki’s transformation from being a dacoit to sage of enlightenment is one of the most enchanting episodes of such epochal spiritual transformation. Sri Krishna Chaitanya a.k.a. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a renowned, revered holy being lived over five centuries ago had touched many such lives during his sojourn, spreading Bhakti Yoga…During one of His Divine Discourses delivered at the University Auditorium, Bhagawan had narrated a beautiful story of such a transformation, involving Sri Krishna Chaitanya and a thief… Krishna Chaitanya was once moving about, dancing and singing ecstatically, oblivious to everything, being immersed in the contemplation of the Lord. He entered Navadweep, where the leaders of the town joined him in his bhajan with equal ecstasy. A thief also joined this group. He had been a thief all his life and was an arrant liar. He joined in their dance and thought that as there were many rich men in the group, who were wholly lost in their singing and dancing, he could easily pick their pockets. While this was his intention, what happened was entirely different. The moment he joined the devout group, he forgot himself and began to sing and dance with the same fervour as the others. After the others had left, he sat apart for a while, watching Chaitanya. A small group of children were listening to Chaitanya’s discourse. The thief ran towards Chaitanya and said: “Swami! You are giving advice to so many persons. Please impart some holy name to me.” Chaitanya replied: “Tell me first of all who you are and what your life story is. I shall then give you a message.” The man confessed “Swami! I am a thief. I have been leading the life of a thief and a liar. My name is Rama, People call me as Rama the Thief.” Chaitanya said: “What a pity! I shall, however, give you a message. What will you give me as guru dakshina (offering to the teacher)?” The thief replied: “I shall give you a share in the booty I get from stealing.” Chaitanya said: “I have no need of any such thing. Give me as your offering the promise that you will not commit theft in future.” He replied: “Swami! I am prepared to offer you anything, but I cannot agree to give up stealing.” Chaitanya then said: “If that is so, I shall impart the sacred name to you on one condition. Whichever place you may choose for thieving, you must recite the sacred name 108 times before you break into the place.” Chaitanya then drew the thief near to him. The thief’s heart had considerably softened after listening to Chaitanya’s words. “Sambhashanam Sankatanasanam” (“conversation with a holy person removes distress.”) The thief was getting rid of fear. He neared Chaitanya, “Sparsanam Karma Vimochanam” (The touch of a holy person frees one from the effects of past deeds.) Chaitanya held the thief’s head and whispered in his ear three times the mantra: “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaaya.” The mere sight (darshanam) of Chaitanya destroyed the sins committed by the thief. His words dispelled the worry felt by the thief. The touch of the saint freed him from the bonds of past deeds. The thief went back with a purified heart. As he was leaving, he saw large numbers of people going to Chaitanya. Many rich persons were amongst them. The thief thought that this was a good opportunity for him to break into their houses. The richest man in the village had taken his wife and children to meet Chaitanya, leaving his house unguarded. The thief broke into the house and entered the safe room in which all valuables were kept. He saw gems of all kinds. He was resolved not to touch any of the valuables till he had completed recitation of the mantra given to him by Chaitanya. But, before he completed the mantra japa, the master of the house and others arrived there. The lady of the house, who had gone with all her jewels, wanted to replace them in the safe. She saw a stranger in the room engaged in deep meditation. She thought it must be some great sage who had come into the house in their absence and was meditating on God. She called her husband. The stranger continued to be immersed in meditation. He did not appear like a thief. They thought he must be some saintly person who had honoured their home by his visit. All of them began to offer worship to him and prostrate before him. They thought that in the wake of saint Chaitanya other saintly persons were also visiting their village. Meanwhile, on the completion of the recitation of the mantra, the thief opened his eyes and found to his astonishment a large group of people standing reverently before him. The master of the house asked him: “Oh sir! Who are you? Where from have you come? We have been sanctified by your visit. Please take your food in our home and redeem our lives by doing us this honour.” A great change came over the thief. He thought: “If the mere recitation of the Lord’s name can bring me so much honour and respect, although I had come here only to steal, how many greater things may be in store for me if I genuinely recite the Lord’s name for its own sake? I may hope for the highest position by the grace of the Lord. “That very moment he decided to give up stealing. He prostrated before the master of the house and his wife and said: “Mother, Let me tell you the truth. I am a thief. Let me go to a forest. I shall spend the rest of my days contemplating on God and leading the life of a true ascetic.” Listening to his words of truth, the elders

Lessons From Sabari’s Sadhana…

Lessons From Sabari’s Sadhana… Sabari, the aboriginal character in the epic Ramayana is a great celebrity in the world of devotees as she epitomised highest sadhana with her pure unsullied love for Her Beloved Lord Sri Ramachandra. An aboriginal woman she was, Sabari grew curious after she heard of Lord Rama and His proposed visit to Sage Matanga’s hermitage, during Rama’s sojourn in the forest. Ever-since she remained God-intoxicated thinking of Rama alone, desiring for His darshan. Narrating this beautiful story, Bhagawan urges His devotees to take a cue from the illustrious life of this devotee of His Treta Avatar and attain the Ultimate. Sabari had a very tender compassionate heart. How she came to Matanga Rishi and stayed at his hermitage is a very interesting story. Her marriage was arranged by her parents, and as was the custom among the Adivasis (aboriginals) a goat was to be offered to the tribal Goddess, on the night previous to the cere¬mony, in order to win the Grace for the couple. When Sabari came to know about this slaughter, she wept, and fell at the feet of her parents, praying them to save the goat. She asked, “How can our married life be happy, when the dying bleat of this goat is the prologue?” But, the father pushed her aside and proceeded with the cruel rite. That night, Sabari stole out of that den of torture, and hid herself in the depths of the jungle that was not far off. When day dawned, her parents as well as the groom’s party were plunged in grief and anxiety; they combed the area, even where she was lying low amidst the thick bushes, and they went back, saying among themselves, “She could not have gone to the her¬mitage, for no woman would be given asylum there.” She heard these words and so, she concluded that the hermitage was the safest place for her. She felt that some monk will take pity on her, and not send her back. Matanga espied her and gave her permission to be in his habitation. He told her that God in the form of Sri Rama was coming to the hermitage some day, since He had been exiled into the Forests for t4 years and He is eager to save the monks and seekers, doing Tapas in the forests, from the ravages of the demonic enemies of peace! Rama, he said, was proceeding from one region to another with His consort Sita and His brother, Lakshmana. From that day Sabari had no other thought than that of Rama, no other desire than the desire to have the darshan of Rama, the chance to touch His Feet and the opportunity to speak with Him. Her heart was saturated with the Ramarasa (the essence of Rama principle), the sweetness of the Rama principle. She had no other Japam or Dhyana or spiritual exercise. She spent her time preparing for the visit of Rama to the hermitage; just as she cleaned the paths, she cleaned her heart, too. Pebbles and thorns disappeared from both through her efforts. She walked through the undergrowth and removed overhanging creepers and briars, for she imagined Rama would not have com¬bed His hair and it might get caught. She broke the lumps of earth, for she feared the tender soles of Sita will be hurt when she walks over them. She gathered fruits and tubers from the jungle trees and plants and kept them by every day, for no one knew when Rama will arrive! And, she took no risks. She tasted every fruit, whether it was bitter, sour or sweet, so that Rama could eat the best. She smoothed the surface of all stones that lay by the side of the tracks in the jungle for, she expected Rama, Lakshmana or Sita to sit upon any one of them when they got tired of walking. She hoped that one of them would rest awhile on one of the rocks she had polished with great care. Thus her heart became Rama-hridaya! Sabari was so immersed in Rama that the ascetics lost all awareness of her sex; they allowed her to remain in the hermitage, after Matanga related to them the high level of her Sadhana. Matanga also left this body and gave away his hermitage to Sabari, saying, “You alone deserve to be here when Rama arrives!” The Sadhana Sabari did to earn the bliss of serving Rama, you can do, when you serve Sai Rama in the poor. By this service, you realise the Self as Rama. II Samasta Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu II

An Emperor’s Taste…

An Emperor’s Taste… Likes and dislikes are but fancies of the moment; the mind wavers, flits from one thing to another. One has to realise this and be steady, adhering to the good and avoiding the injurious, says Bhagawan narrating a beautiful story from the life of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The Emperor of Delhi, the famous Akbar, was melancholy and depressed. His Empire was prosperous and safe from enemies, both internal and external. The cause of his sadness lay elsewhere. It was the food he ate every day. Of course he had himself shown the preference; the cooks, or Birbal, the Superintendent of the Imperial Kitchen, were not to blame. Nevertheless, he had developed a disgust for meat, for, it was meat, meat, meat—morning noon, evening and night. So, he called into the Presence, Birbal and commanded that the menu be soon changed. And, the command was obeyed. Birbal racked his brains for a long while and decided on brinjals for a change. He procured baskets of brinjals, fresh and fine. He got prepared chutney salad, soup, cutlet, sweet, savoury bitter—all from brinjal. Akbar relished every item; he praised Birbal to the skies. It was brinjal breakfast, brinjal lunch, brinjal dinner. Thus it went on merrily for a few days— but, for a few days only! Akbar grew disgusted with brinjals, too. He poured all his wrath on Birbal. And, Birbal had to switch on to something else. For, likes and dislikes are but fancies of the moment; the mind wavers, flits from one thing to another. One has to realise this and be steady, adhering to the good and avoiding the injurious. Establish Mastery over the Mind; or, the Mind will ride you into, ruin. The Mind is a bundle of Desires. Give up Desire; the mind disappears. II Samasta Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu II
