Sai Vani Is Sathya Vani…

Sai Vani Is Sathya Vani… All that He speaks become Truth, for He Is verily Truth in human form… Who can fathom the mysterious mystery of The Master Supreme, Who plays His cards at an all-encompassing… supra-conscious level, far…far…far beyond human imagination??? For an earnest seeker, every single moment with Bhagawan is a revealing moment… Revealing His endless mystery… a flashback to a beautiful December evening in 1995, with Swami and His students…  “Name the book, SAI VANI”, Swami told the students on 28th of December, 1995. But that is not the complete story. The students had assembled in the Mandir that evening with a photograph of Bhagawan and the list of contents of the book. They had sent a letter to Swami that afternoon regarding the book. On seeing the boys carrying the paraphernalia in a tray, Bhagawan gave a curious and mischievous smile. The occasional glances and smiles continued till some of the boys started wondering if Swami would come near them at all. At last, Swami came, asking, “What is that?” The students told about the book and pleaded Swami to suggest a name. “Peru Enduku?” (Why Name?) Then Swami asked, “Did you think of any name?” “No, Swami”, the boys replied in a chorus, “You have to give the name” Graciously, Swami said, “Sai Vani Pettandi” (Name it Sai Vani). “Please write it with Your Own Hands Swami”, pleaded the students. “No, No” said Bhagawan and moved away. He would have gone a few steps before He paused. Sensing that Swami may agree to bless the book by writing down the name, a few students went up to Swami and gave Him the photograph and the list of contents. Swami gently wrote: “Sathya Vani”, and after a moment’s pause, He said, “Oh I have written ‘Sathya Vani’ instead of ‘Sai Vani’. Well, Sai Vani is better. Name the book Sai Vani”…. and thus the christening of the book left a mirthful impression on the students assembled there.

My ‘trip’ to Puttaparthi…

My ‘trip’ to Puttaparthi… Bhagawan at Shirdi would often repeat that, let His man be at any distance, a thousand koss (an Indian unit, measuring distance) away from Him, he will be drawn to Him like a sparrow, with a thread tied to its feet. When He wills, His Will turns into accomplishment… He chooses the right time for the right action. This is all the more true for a fledgling pilgrim who is about to reach Him. How William Hwehu Ansah, Accra, Ghana was drawn to Prasanthi Nilayam and how Bhagawan cleared him out of one last bit of skepticism…?!? …An interesting experience from December 1979 issue of Sanathana Sarathi. Towards November 1977, our centre invited names of devotees who would like to make a trip to Puttaparthi. It never occurred to me to immediately give my name since I considered it would be presumptuous for a penniless public servant to think of making such an expensive trip. Soon after this, I started seeing Swami in my dreams. The first night I woke up with a rather vague feeling that I should think of going to Puttaparthi. I discarded the thought immediately. The next dream was more detailed and lengthier. I was in a little village living in rooms with a lot of people some of whom were from my centre and with whom I ate together. Next I saw myself in front of a tall building which had protruding platforms on the first floor. Bhagawan was on the ground floor and I was doing Namaskara. At this time I didn’t know that to dream of Bhagawan was a privilege and not an ordinary occurrence and I again dismissed the dream as my silly imaginings. My third dream was a most peculiar experience. I saw only the face of Bhagawan for an instance or two; whereupon I was forced awake in the middle of the night in a sweat with a clear command that I should go to Puttaparthi! After giving so much trouble to Swami in my inexperience and innocence, I finally gave my name to the planning committee without an inkling of where the money for the trip was coming from. I need not have worried! Within the next few days I made three times my annual salary simply because a friend of mine, for no compelling reason, decided to sell a huge consignment of imported goods through me and give me a percentage of the profits. So the stage was set and need I say that all other arrangements and requirements went through without a hitch? Need I also say that those from the centre I travelled with were some of the faces I saw in my dream? So, we got to the village late on the 21st of November. The last thing on my mind was my dreams but a friend decided to take me round and as we made the turn to the back of the bhajan hall, I stopped dead in my tracks. My friend asked what the matter was and I muttered something incomprehensible to him but what had stopped me was the fact that my dream was staring me right in the face in all its details—the two protruding platforms and rather surprisingly, the architecture and colours of the structure which I remembered very well. My surprise was not too great then when my private interviews were granted in a room on the ground floor and I did my Namaskara exactly where I had dreamt it! (I went to one of the interviews with my fingers shorn of all rings having made the wish that Bhagawan would give me a ring. As the interview progressed, my wish crossed my mind and at that instant Bhagawan interrupted His discourse, turned to me and said “Tomorrow I will give you a talisman!”) But all these surprises were nothing compared to what I experienced when I was bidding farewell to Bhagawan.

Baba Is Lord Dattatreya…

Baba Is Lord Dattatreya… In every age He incarnates…. the Ancient One…Adi Guru Lord Dattatreya… Divine legends of yore has umpteen reference of Divine Incarnations…and about ‘The Oneness’ of all these varied forms… Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Who Is ‘The Adimoolam’, Supreme Divinty, Who described Himself as Shiva – Shakthi, Supreme Brahmam and Maha Maya in a Single Form…  has also revealed Himself to be Lord Dattatreya… verily He Is Lord Dattatreya… read on how Bhagawan revealed His original entity as Lord Dattatreya… O Bhagawan, “Swami, what is Your real form?” Baba smiled and replied, “Bangaroo, I will show it to you some day.” That day came when Baba visited Mudumalai forest. One day after breakfast, Baba walked on to the beautiful meadow in front of the guest house and posed for photographs with every member of the party. A Polaroid camera was used by a student to click the photographs. The photos were given to the members instantly. Finally, Baba asked the student to take a snap of Him standing alone. But, the lower part of His orange robe had been caught in the twigs of a bush. Before the camera clicked, Smt Ratanlal rushed forward to set right the folds of the robe. Everyone was astonished when Bhagawan shouted at her loudly “Don’t touch Me!” and she retreated quickly. After the camera clicked, Baba held the photo coming out of the camera and gave it to Joga Rao. As he held it in his palm, the black and white Polaroid picture developed gradually. But he was astonished at what did he saw. In the place where he had expected to see Baba’s form in the usual robe, there stood a young human form, which wore a white flowing garment, had three heads and six hands! Each arm was holding an insignia of Divinity. The lower right arm bent at the elbow, was resting on the back of a majestic young cow. The face in the centre was that of Baba! It was the form of Dattatreya as described in Puranas, the integrated form of Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara!. Baba had answered Joga Rao’s question. That was His real form! Bhagawan confirmed while speaking to the students at Brindavan the next morning that it was indeed His true form. He also clarified that Smt Ratanlal would not have survived if she had touched Him then.

Lesson on Whistle Blowing

Lesson on Whistle Blowing from the Epic Mahabharata There is an incident from the great Indian epic Mahabharata. The Pandavas were invited for a game of dice by Kauravas. It was a custom in those days that princely persons were under obligation to accept the invitation for playing dice under the royal norms. Betting was also part of the rules of the game. In this game of dice played between the Kauravas and Pandavas, Pandavas lost everything due to the foul-play of the Kauravas. After all things were lost finally, Yudhisthira, the eldest among the Pandavas, put their queen Draupadi as a bet. When they lost, they were forced to part with her. It was the prerogative of the people who won the bet to use their discretion to utilise the property or people they had won through the game of dice in the way they liked. They (Kauravas) wanted to settle scores with Pandavas for the humiliation (in their perception) meted out to them earlier in a palace known as ‘Maya Sabha’ (the magical palace). They summoned Draupadi to the court and made an abortive attempt to humiliate her by disrobing her. This was averted by the Divine intervention of Lord Krishna who miraculously protected her honour. Dushasana (the younger brother of Duryodhana) was disrobing Draupadi in King Dhritarashtra’s court amidst great personages like Bheeshmacharya (the grandsire of the Kuru clan), Kripacharya and Dronacharya (the preceptors of Pandavas and Kauravas), who were all aware that the act was wrong. All wise men were aware that what was being done was an atrocious act, but all remained mute spectators. It was only Vidura (minister of King Dhritarashtra and also his younger brother) who gathered courage to tell Bheeshma in no uncertain terms: “You are a man who can discriminate between good and bad. Such a noble person like you should not remain a silent spectator when such an atrocious act is being perpetrated. Why do you just keep quiet?” Bheeshma replied thus to the query of Vidura: “What can I do when the wicked people perpetrate such sub-human acts?” Vidura then reacted thus: “No! The one who does, the one who encourages, the one who acts as a mute/helpless witness, and the one who does not express the disapproval in unequivocal terms despite being aware that it is wrong – all are equally guilty.” The lesson that modern managers can learn from this episode is regarding ‘whistle blowing’. When something is going wrong that may affect the survival and prosperity of the organisation, it is the duty of wise people (managers) involved in the decision-making process to express opinions objectively in a polite manner without offending anybody (the top management).

Finally, India won the Match!

Finally, India won the Match! December 30, 1997 In the morning, the ‘Sri Sathya Sai Unity Cup’ cricket match was played in the Sri Sathya Sai Hill View stadium at Prasanthi Nilayam. Swami came to the ground in an open white Saab convertible car. There was a march past of national flags of many countries. Later, the Prime Minister Shri Inder Kumar Gujaral hoisted the international flag, which was followed by Swami lighting the torch. Many other dignitaries including the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were also present for the occasion. The match was between India XI and World XI (the World XI team consisted of players from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West Indies led by Arjuna Ranatunga from Sri Lanka). The Indian team led by Sachin Tendulkar won the match. Doordarshan, the national television channel had covered the event ‘live’. After the match, in the Mandir… Swami : (To the Warden) Finally India won the match. Warden : It was by Your Grace, Swami. Swami : (To a teacher) How was the programme? Teacher : Very good, Swami. Bahut Anand Aaya. (We really enjoyed it) Swami : How was the flag hoisting and flag march? Teacher : Very good, Swami. Everything went on perfectly, by Your Grace. Swami : Played very well. But Indian players got 3 catches. Swami : Ranatunga and Jayasurya (Sri Lankan cricket players) are good boys… Played well, but they gave catch and were out. Others also gave catches and wickets fell down! Swami : (To another teacher) Finally India won the match. Teacher : Yes, Swami. It was all by Your Grace. Swami, TV commentators were telling that they had never seen such a beautiful stadium. Swami : Yes, very nice stadium. The Prime Minister also told that he had never seen a stadium like this. He told that he had not seen a game like this anywhere in the world. It was nice to see so many people in the stadium.

FROM ‘I’ TO ‘WE’ – by Ashwin Salian

FROM ‘I’ TO ‘WE’ – by Ashwin Salian “Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.” – St. Francis of Assisi Before I joined the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School in my eleventh class, I studied in a school by name ‘St. Francis D’Assisi High School’. As the name implies, the school was dedicated to St. Francis. Every morning we used to say the prayer given above. Then I could not understand the real meaning of the prayer. Now that I have joined the Higher Secondary School, I have realised my duties and responsibilities to some extent. Thus, I can now understand the true meaning of the prayer and relate it to my own life. Why only my life – it can be related to everyone’s life.  The prayer can be divided into three parts. The first part is where the person prays that “Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace.” This statement is very significant in the life of a Sai student. Let me tell you why. Bhagavan has specially selected all His students to be His instruments. He has said in one of His Divine discourses, “I am depending upon you students for a great transformation in outlook, for a great revolution. Students of Sri Sathya Sai College must lead this revolution.”  Thus we are all the instruments in His Divine mission. Knowingly or unknowingly we are working towards the goal. Let me narrate to you an incident to illustrate this point. Once a student was suffering from chicken pox. He was put up in the old hostel. He was feeling very sad since he could not come for Bhagavan’s darshan. He was continuously praying to Bhagavan. One evening, another brother went to meet him sometime and then the sick – boy asked him if he had any Vibhuti, packets. The other brother promptly gave him a few packets of Vibhuti he had in his pocket. At this the sick boy started crying. On being asked the reason for his crying, he told that Bhagavan had come in his dream and told him that He would give him Prasadam. And he did not know how that would happen, as he could not go for darshan. And yet Bhagavan kept His world. Thus, unknowingly the other boy had become an instrument of Bhagavan. Similarly, all of us are ‘destined’ to become His messengers. In the second part of the prayer, the devotee prays to God that he may remove the bad from this world i.e. hatred, doubt, despair etc., and replace it with good qualities like love, faith, joy etc. This is what a true messenger of our Lord’s love is supposed to do. But for that we have to change ourselves first. Bhagavan has said, “You are My instruments from whom My love will pour. Be always aware, that the moment you let your ego descend on you, My work ceases. When you have overcome your negative mindfulness, you will again become My source.”  Let me drive this point home with an incident that happened in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Once Francis was riding home from the market. He saw a leper on the way. The lepper was in a terrible condition; a terrible stench was coming from the pus that oozed from his wounds. Francis was horrified and he went away as fast as he could. But then he remembered the phrase from the Bible, “Desire, what you formerly despised; despise what you former desired.” Immediately, he turned back and went to the leper and showered his love on him. He wrapped up the leper in a blanket, put him on his shoulder and started walking towards a home for the destitute. On the way, suddenly he found there was no weight on his shoulder. He put down the burden, unwrapped the blanket and found that there was no leper in it! This was one among the few incidents that changed the course of his life. When he left his sense of pride, he could become the messenger of God. It was due to this that the world respects him as a saint.  The third part of the Prayer is where the devotee puts others before himself. He does not care to be understood and loved by anyone. Instead, he wants to love others. He cares not for receiving and thinks that it is in giving that he receives his joy and everything. He says that it is in forgiving the faults of others that his own faults will be forgiven. He believes firmly that when he puts his own interests behind, he becomes one with God. These are the very teachings that Bhagavan gives us. He says, “Love all; serve all.” These little teachings finally take us to God. As Bhagavan says, “In this college, you will be marching from smaller truths to great truths.” Let us all become worthy instruments of Sai and travel from ‘I’ to ‘We’.

The Descent of God

The Descent of God More than 2000 years ago, when ego and pride became human nature, ignorance reigned supreme and the demonic nature of man was at its peak, Jesus Christ descended on earth and through his message of love and compassion demonstrated the path of righteousness. Today, you must recognise the most important aspect of the life of Jesus Christ. In the very beginning of his life, Jesus declared, “I am a Messenger of God”. He proclaimed that all are embodiments of Divinity in this human form, and all are messengers of God. He said that every ounce of this human body till the last drop of blood should be dedicated to the service of mankind. “A heart filled with love and compassion is the real temple of God”, declared Jesus.  The alarm clock wakes us by ringing the alarm at the opportune time. The great sages of ancient times would wake man from the slumber of ignorance by warning him at the appropriate time and in the appropriate manner. They would warn man to recognise the Divinity which is all pervading. One must remember these teachings and put them into practice every moment of our lives. Celebrating the birthday of such a great and pious soul as just another ritual is not what is expected. The day you understand the teachings of Jesus, and implement them with your heart and soul, that day will really be the Birthday of Jesus Christ. The words of such great people should constantly ring in your hearts and should be the guiding light of your lives. Your real offering to God will be the dedication of your life to practicing these teachings. The Two World Views There are two kinds of views in this world. The first one is the spiritual point of view, and the other is the worldly point of view. You are walking on the road and on the way you see a rope lying on the road. Instinctively you think that it is a snake and get scared. Where does this fear come from? Has the rope changed into a snake or is it still a rope? The rope is still a rope, but you look at it with your material vision and mistake it to be a snake. This hallucination is a result of the worldly point of view. The spiritual point of view enables you to see the rope as a rope and as nothing else. It allows you to see the truth as the truth and therefore you don’t have any fear. This whole world is a manifestation of ‘Brahman’. Your vision which is blurred by ignorance, illusion and hallucination sees the world as material objects and not as Brahman. All that you see in the world, that you think as being real, is actually all unreal and false.  When Jesus was being tortured, his followers were in great grief. He said, “Just as this body has a dress, this body is a dress to the soul and nothing else”. Jesus told his followers, “Do not harm anyone. Do not hurt anyone. Treat everyone alike.” You must always practice these teachings in your lives. Ignorance has a very powerful influence on the mind. Arjuna said to Krishna, “The mind is very powerful, but it is wavering in nature.” In reply Krishna said, “However powerful or wavering one’s mind may be, with Sadhana (spiritual practice) it can be controlled.” A bee has the strength to drill a hole in the hardest variety of wood. However, when it enters a lotus, and if the lotus closes its petals, then even with all its might, the bee cannot come out of the lotus. Similarly, the all-powerful mind becomes powerless and surrenders at the lotus feet of the Lord. If you want to control the all-powerful mind, you must use the powerful tool of Sadhana.

Mahatma Guru Nanak…

Mahatma Guru Nanak… Nowadays, if the children ask any questions about the aspect of Brahma, the parents will curb such curiosity by saying that they should not waste their time. They are told to think of such things only after getting old. Today, many people who are preaching the aspect of Brahman will go nowhere because they are subservient to the worldly desires. There is a small story here. On the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti today, a Guru Nanak story from Bhagawan. Nanak was propagating sacred ideas of God and even the Muslims were attracted by his teachings. It appeared as if the teachings of Nanak were acceptable to all religions. He was one who was clearly indicating the path that one should adopt. After some time, some religious leaders started worrying that all the Muslims may take to Nanak’s religion. They carried complaints to King Akbar and created tales about Nanak which would influence the King against Nanak. They wanted Akbar to punish Nanak. Akbar however had a very steady mind and a great respect for all religions. Even though the religious leaders complained about Nanak, he did not believe them. Akbar decided that he should talk to Nanak directly and assess the situation. He sent for Nanak, but Nanak would not come to meet kings who rule over the material world. He said that he would go only to devotees. He said that he is a free person moving in God’s Kingdom and would not come to meet Akbar. Such a reply further excited the religious leaders. They were planning and inquiring further to trouble Nanak. However, Akbar sent word to Nanak, again telling him that the next day there would be prayers in honour of God at the mosque and requested that Nanak attend the prayers. He also sent a palanquin to carry Nanak. However, Nanak thought it very arrogant to go to God’s abode in a palanquin and walked to the mosque. Much before others came there, he unobtrusively sat in a corner. The religious leaders began to recite prayers; and as soon as this started, Nanak laughed very loudly. All those assembled there felt very angry. Nanak was laughing so loudly that people were not even able to hear the prayers. After some time, Akbar began to pray and Nanak laughed even more loudly. All others who were assembled there felt angry that he was humiliating even Akbar. After that, Akbar went and asked Nanak softly why he had laughed, when the prayers were being recited. Nanak said, “Although the priest was reciting prayers, his thoughts were in his home where the child was having fever. The priest’s mind was directed towards his home. If the mind says one thing and he does something else, he cannot be a religious leader. This is not helpful at all.” Akbar went and asked the priest if, in truth, his mind was thinking of his son when he was saying the prayers. The priest confirmed that as the child was suffering from high fever, he was thinking of his son even while reciting the prayers. Akbar then asked Nanak why his laughter continued even when he started to pray. Nanak then said, “Surely you know why I laughed. Before you came here, several horses were sent to you by the king of Panchala, and you have a great liking towards horses. Although you were praying here, your thoughts were on the horses. Is this not true?” After Nanak gave this answer about his laughter, Akbar helped Nanak spread his religion and gave him all support. In the prayers, that we undertake, we go on striking at the mosquitoes soon after we start the prayer. Because religious leaders like Nanak of earlier days had the power to concentrate, they were called Mahatmas. Their thought, word and deed were totally united.

Ananya Bhakti…

Ananya Bhakti… How many of us do get immersed in the melodic, enchanting music of Sai Krishna’s flute, completely intoxicated, forgetting our own selves??? Bhagawan narrates the essence of true, unparalleled devotion…Ananya Bhakthi… From Bhagawan’s Divine discourse at Abbotsbury, Chennai, on 19 Jan 1986. A Gopika once asked Radha how she felt when she saw Krishna, how her heart responded, what transformation occurred in her and what joy she experienced. Radha replied: “The moment I hear the melodious flute of Krishna, my heart becomes still, and I forget myself when I learn that Krishna is coming. I am lost in the music of His flute and I am aware of nothing else. How can I describe to you my feelings when I am intoxicated by the magic of His melody?” The God intoxicated devotee cannot describe his blissful experience in words. One who attempts to express it, has no real experience of it at all. Those who regard themselves as devotees should recognise the vast difference between their narrow minded attitude and the ineffable character of true devotion. They should resolve to shed all their petty attachments and develop steadfast devotion to God as the main object of their life. For this purpose, the company of the good is essential. Good thoughts are promoted only through association with the good. This means avoiding contact with the evil minded and the unrighteous. Association with bad persons makes even a good person bad. There are classic examples of the evil consequences of association with the bad. Kaikeyi in the Ramayana and Dharmaraja in the Mahabharata are examples of persons who suffered grievously because of their association with evil minded persons Manthara in the case of Kaikeyi and the Kauravas in the case of Dharmaraja. Everyone must strive to fill the heart with true devotion. Constant contemplation on the form of the Lord and frequent repetition of the Lord’s name are the means by which the heart is filled with the love of God. When there is this love, the devotee is filled with inexpressible ecstasy. It was out of such ecstasy that Kulasekhara Alwar, the royal saint, exclaimed: “Oh Lord! People talk of Moksha as the means of redeeming life and getting rid of birth and death. I do not ask for such redemption. I shall be content with loving you and serving you in countless lives. Allow me to love you and serve you that is the only blessing I seek from you and not Moksha.”
