The Divine Education

The Divine Education Bal Vikas (Sai Spiritual Education) is the primary basis of the great movement to restore righteousness (dharma) in the world… The ideal of the program is to raise a generation of boys and girls who have a clean and a clear conscience. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, June 06, 1978 In 1969 Sri Sathya Sai Baba began a program for children in India to teach ancient principles of righteousness. The program became known as Bal Vikas (Blossoming of the Child), and outside India it is now known a Sai Spiritual Education (SSE). The SSE program is conducted for children by Sri Sathya Sai Organization centers in over 100 countries. SSE promotes the Unity of Religions, the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man, placing a ceiling on one’s desires, and the emergence into thought, word, and deed of the five human values: Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Nonviolence; all exemplified with stories about the life of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. You are invited to see examples of SSE student art, poetry and videos on Sai Shine. Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s statements about the spiritual basis of the five human values can be found at The Supreme End of Education. Here are two examples: Sacred actions only can ensure world peace Every man expects the new year to confer on him peace, happiness and prosperity. New year does not bring happiness or sorrow with it. Yesterday was same as today and tomorrow will be same as today. Days are the same, but one experiences either pleasure or pain depending on one’s own actions. Meritorious deeds will not confer misery, and sinful deeds cannot give happiness. One is bound to face the consequences of one’s actions. But one treats pleasure and pain alike when one becomes the recipient of God’s grace. God’s grace destroys mountains of sins and confers peace. But due to the impact of Kali Age, man has lost faith in God. He is after money and power. How can such a man attain Divinity? Man can rise from the level of the human to the Divine only by practising human values. So, man should cultivate human values. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, January 01, 2001

Being a Good Human First

Being a Good Human First Unnoticed and unpublished until 2022, this 1981 discourse is an inspiration for all Sai Education teachers today. On August 1, 1981, in the inaugural discourse of the Overseas Bal Vikas Teachers Training Camp in Prasanthi Nilayam, the ashram of Sathya Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Baba elucidates the fundamental basis of human values in language and style clearly understood and appreciated by those fortunate teachers from outside India who were present. Ostensibly addressed to Bal Vikas (now SSE) teachers, the concepts he gave universally apply to teachers fostering the emergence of human values in thought, word and deed in students in all Sai Education programs whether one teaches in Sai Spiritual Education (SSE), Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV), Sathya Sai Schools, or Institutes of Sathya Sai Education (ISSE). Entitled “Humanness in Man”, the discourse is translated on the dais with clear diction and pronunciation by Professor N. Kasturi, Sai Baba’s chosen biographer. In the early 1980s videotaping of discourses had not yet begun. Fortunately, the audio recording of this discourse remains for all to hear Sathya Sai Baba’s melodious voice in this video presentation of seven parts. The images in the videos are from Sathya Sai Baba’s visit to the Poornachandra Auditorium in Prasanthi Nilayam to inaugurate the World Education Conference Exhibition of July 20, 2008.

Sri Sathya Sai Education in Human Values

Sri Sathya Sai Education in Human Values The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values program (SSEHV) fosters the emergence of the five human values espoused by Sri Sathya Sai Baba: Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Nonviolence. These values are inherent in human beings. Through the process of educare, teachers guide students to bring out their innate human values into thought, word and deed. SSEHV community-based programs for children and adults are provided free by 28 Institutes of Sathya Sai Education around the world. SSEHV programs do not focus on any one spiritual leader or any one religion. Descriptions and locations of SSEHV programs can be found in the SSEHV Global Compendium. Sri Sathya Sai Baba has spoken frequently about human values. His statements about human values can be found in The Supreme End of Education. Here are two examples: Of what use is human birth if human values are absent? From head to foot, man is filled with anger today. He has become like an animal. Even an animal is better than man. An animal has a reason and season. Today man has no reason and no season. If you behave in this manner, how can you call yourself a human? To call yourself a human, first and foremost show humanness in action. Just because you have a human body, you cannot call yourself a human. The human body will have value only when you cultivate human values, namely, sathya (truth), dharma (righteousness), santhi (peace), prema (love) and ahimsa (non-violence). Of what use is human birth if human values are absent? First demonstrate humanness. Develop love. By doing so, all will become your friends. What kind of friends? Those who are full of love. Your real friend is only God. God is love personified. He is full of love. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, June 01, 2001 When the principles are properly explained, everyone will accept them We feel that some countries are not amenable to accept these values. What is the reason? When the principles are properly explained, everyone will accept them. Parrot-like repetition of the words “Human Values” will not result in understanding. When the inner significance is explained, everyone will accept them. Tell them—Truth is God, Love is God, live in love. When explained thus, everyone will accept. Will anybody say `no,’ to speak truth? Everyone has to accept the validity of these assertions. When you explain in detail the inner significance, humanity will accept it without reservation. No matter whether it is India, America, Japan or Germany or Christian or Muslim; Truth is only one for all. Truth is one, Truth is God. You should attain this sacred state. This fact has to be accepted by any nation. We in India say 2+2=4. Whether Pakistan or anywhere else, this will be the same. Is there any one in Pakistan who will say 2+2=3? Will the Chinese say 2+2=1? All will say 2+2=4. This is fundamental truth. It is a pure truth. It is beyond time and place. It is in the same way that eternal values of Truth, Peace, Righteousness, Love and Non-violence are permanent and eternal. People come to Me and say, “Swami, I want peace.” Where is that peace? They don’t know. I tell them, “You are the embodiment of peace. There is no peace outside you, outside there are only pieces!” When this is explained, they realize the truth and actually attain peace. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, September 29, 2000

Education System – The World Teacher

Education System – The World Teacher Sathya Sai Education in Human Values fulfils the ultimate mission of education. He, who has inspired this educational programme, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, goes directly to the essence of the institution of education and its role in human civilization, as he does with other social institutions and, indeed, with human life itself. He distinguishes between, “the really real and the relatively real”, between the universal and the parochial, between that which is lasting and that which is transient. Education and Culture

Education and Culture by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba STUDENTS, teachers and educators! What do you mean by education? What type of education should you have? What kind of education will set an ideal? What is the outcome of education? One must enquire deeply, investigate and get the right answer to these questions. People feel that education helps in materialistic pursuits and rest content with this. This is a not a right attitude. Education should promote culture. It is not by education alone but by culture that one gets refined. Culture promotes refinement. It is termed as saṃskāra which consists of sadguña (good character), sadāchāra (good practices) and sadbhāvanā (good feelings). For a person to be deemed educated, his behaviour should be good, his actions useful to society and his feelings should be compassionate and kind. “Sarvabhūta Hite Ratah” (One should have concern for the welfare of all beings). What is education without culture? It is not enough if a student is endowed with scientific and worldly knowledge. He should have essentially moral and spiritual knowledge also. The aim of education should be to bring about an all-round development of the personalities of the students. Education should make all virtues emerge and shine forth in students. Indian culture essentially aims at developing human beings with such a personality. What is education without culture? It is like a kite cut off from its main thread. It is not possible to predict where this kite would land–whether on thorny bushes or on dwelling places. It is difficult to predict how such education is going to affect and harm society. It may also be compared to a house without light; bats and poisonous reptiles enter into such houses. Education without culture makes man forget his true human nature and take to evil ways. Such education is like a counterfeit coin. Even beggars refuse to accept a counterfeit coin. Even parents would hesitate to love a son without culture. Refinement and culture are the very life-breath of human life. Knowledge with humility makes one blossom It would be wrong to call it education if it merely teaches the meanings of words. The basic aim of education is to make men of character and virtue. Many people think that knowledge is power. It is not so. In fact, character is power. Education should confer humility Education without humility, action without discrimination, scholarship without wisdom, words without truth, friendship without gratitude, music without melody, politics without morality and integrity can never shine in society. One’s personality blossoms only when one has humility along with knowledge. Education should be useful to society. It should make citizens follow the path of morality and righteousness and make their lives happy. Human life is very sacred and valuable. Today people are not aware of the uniqueness of human life. They have forgotten human values. That is the reason why one comes across various agitations and strikes in society today What is the reason for the country getting poverty-stricken, for suffering from fear and anxiety, for not recognizing the sacredness of spirituality, for losing morality and integrity? The reason is that man is not living as a human amidst his fellow beings. He is living like an animal or like a demon. Today, the cloud of ego and pomp is covering the sun of Atma and hiding its natural splendour. Selfishness is rampant. The true meaning of word swārtha is that one has to know swa (Atma). Understanding the swa is swārtham (swa+artha). The syllable swa in swārtham does not refer to the body; but the soul. The Atma is pure, unselfish and eternal. That was the reason why the ancient rishis described the Atma in such glorious terms, but today man is misunderstanding the meaning of the word swa, identifying it with the body instead of the soul. Man today is treating the body as the source of all happiness. Such happiness is not true and permanent; it is momentary. Educated persons are not striving to earn spiritual, permanent and real happiness. We need a fusion of knowledge and action We are acquiring knowledge, but do not put it to proper use. Knowledge without action is useless. Action without knowledge is foolishness. There is a divorce between knowledge and action today We need a fusion of knowledge and action. Students should cultivate patriotism and a spirit of service. It is conspicuously absent today. In India today there are 200 Universities and 9000 colleges. About a crore of students have been enrolled in these colleges. Universities are becoming factories which manufacture graduates. These students are let loose on the world after graduation. No one is bothered about the future of these graduates and how they will benefit the nation. What is the use of having education which does not benefit society? No one seems to bother to examine all these matters, whether Government, society, educational authorities, Vice- Chancellors or other administrators, etc. This is a sad state, which ails the system of education today. It is making man a slave of the senses. How can such people serve the society? Wherever you look at the students you find sacrifice conspicuous by its absence. Universities are busy developing different types of subjects to be taught, but are not aware of the real subject which they should reach. What is that subject which is the very basis of all other subjects? Atma-vidyā (spiritual knowledge), is the basis of all education. It is like the ocean while all other types of education are like rivers which must merge in the ocean. Today, education without a spiritual base is causing harm. The essence of Spiritual Education is faith and dedication. They are like the two bunds of a river. Only when the river of life flows between these bunds would the river be safe. If there are no bunds, the waters would flow over villages and towns and cause vast destruction. It is the absence of spirituality which is responsible for all the problems, violence, agitation and strike. Education should foster the two bunds of dedication and faith in students. From self-reliance to self-realisation Education should inculcate in students the spirit of self-reliance and self-confidence. The first thing in

Advent of Sathya Sai Baba

Advent of Sathya Sai Baba “Years later as Swami (Sai Baba) sat one day surrounded by His devotees, there was an abrupt interruption. A pundit, well-versed in the holy Puranas felt a sudden urge to ask a question. “Swami! Was your incarnation a Pravesa (an entrance) or a Prasava (encience)?” I could not quite understand the relevance of the interruption that jolted everybody away from jocular mood of the talk, but Swami knew the reason. Turning to Easwaramma seated in front, He said, “Tell Rama Sarma what happened that day near the well after your mother-in-law had warned you.” Mother said, “She had dreamt of Sathya Narayana Deva and He cautioned me that I should not be frightened if something happens to me through the will of God. That morning when I was at the well drawing water, a big ball of blue light came rolling toward me and I fainted and  fell. I felt, it glided into me.” Swami turned to Rama Sarma with a smile ‘There you have the answer. I was not begotten. It was Pravesa, not Prasava.” “In olden days, it was a common practice among the women of Bharat (India) to perform the sacred ritual of Sathyanarayana Vratam, on every full moon day. Likewise, mother Easwaramma used to perform Sathyanarayana Vratam every full moon day in the company of Karanam Subbamma, who was her neighbour. Karanam Subbamma would often tell Easwaramma, “You are performing Sathyanarayana Vratam. With His blessings, you will bear a son. I want you to name him Sathyanarayana.” On a particular full moon day, Easwaramma did not have food untill very late in the afternoon, since she was participating in the Sathyanarayana Vratam being performed in Subbamma’s house. The family members, including her husband Pedda Venkama Raju, were very much upset to see her remain without food for such a long time. Pedda Venkama Raju argued that there was no need to observe such severe austerities. But Easwaramma was determined. She told them not to wait for her saying, “I am not at all hungry. Sathyanarayana Vratam is more important for me than food.” After the ritual was completed, Subbamma brought prasadam (blessed food) for Easwaramma. Only after partaking of the prasadam did Easwaramma have her food that day. Women in those days used to perform such rituals with all sincerity and devotion. Only after partaking of prasadam could Easwaramma conceive. Yad Bhavam Tad Bhavati (as is the feeling, so is the result). Some people have faith in scriptural injunctions and adhere to them with earnestness, whereas some others ignore them. Easwaramma was the one who followed the injunctions strictly. Only after performing the vratam and partaking of the prasadam would she commence her household chores. She was unlettered. But she had unflinching faith in God. During the seventh month of her pregnancy, one day Subbamma told her, “Easwaramma, the child in your womb is safe due only to the grace of Lord Sathyanarayana.” She extracted a promise from her that the child would be named Sathyanarayana. The mother of Pedda Venkama Raju was also a great devotee of the Lord. She too was of the opinion that the child should be named after Lord Sathyanarayana. Prior to the birth of the child, a very significant incident took place. Puttaparthi was then a tiny hamlet. In the centre was a well from which people would draw water. One day Easwaramma was fetching water from the well. All of a sudden, she saw a white luminous light, emerging like lightning from the sky, entering her womb. There was a sudden gust of wind. Subbamma, who came out of her house at that time, saw the light entering the womb of Easwaramma. Till this day, I have not revealed this to anyone. I am disclosing this today so that you may understand the significance associated with the advent of the Avatar. A day prior to this, as Pedda Venkama Raju was passing in front of Subbamma’s house, she called him inside and told him, “Venkama Raju, tomorrow when the child is born, name him as Sathyanarayana.” But he brushed her advice aside saying, it was her foolish imagination.” Sathya Sai Baba, Divine Discourse, Prashanti Nilayam, 23 November 2003

Pearls from the Ramayana

Pearls from the Ramayana The stories of the Lord are thrilling to listen to. Over the years we had the good fortune reading several great and poetic accounts by great sages and saints of the Lord’s earthly sojourn as RAMA. Valmiki, Tulsidas, Kamban….just to name a few. But what if God himself were to tell his own story? The exact intentions of His actions? What if He were to dive deep into the ocean of His leelas and give you the pearls of wisdom? You would consider yourself extremely fortunate, won’t you? Well, you and me are indeed fortunate. Because, in the next few pages, we have Swami Himself speaking to us on the Ramayana! Go ahead! Enjoy! WHEN YOU RECOGNISE THE SUPREME REALITY When Rama, along with Lakshmana and Sita, was moving in the forest and talking to several Rishis, there used to be congregations where the women used to sit on one side and the Rishis used to sit on the other side and discussions used to take place. In the place where all the women were sitting, Sita also joined them. Rama and Lakshmana, because they were living in the forest and because they were wearing clothes appropriate to the forest were also looking like the Rishis. However, between the two, Rama was showing a certain amount of Divine Light. In the place where Sita was sitting, some of the women went to her and asked: “Have you come alone or have you come along with your husband as well?” She replied that her husband too had come. With the women wanting to see and find out who her husband was, they were asking her many questions. Sita, a sacred woman given to righteous conduct all her life, would not get up when all the Rishis were present and say, “Here is my husband,” by way of introduction. She would not do that; and knowing what was passing through Sita’s mind and recognising her reluctance to get up and point to her husband, one of the women asked Sita by pointing at one of the men, “Is that person your husband?” She then replied in the negative by just nodding her head. Another woman came and asked her, “Is that person whose hair is tied up in knots your husband?” She again nodded her head in the negative. In this way, when many women came and asked Sita, pointing at the wrong person and asking the question, “Is that your husband?” she was nodding her head to indicate a negative reply. When Rama who was sitting there was actually pointed out, Sita said neither, “yes” nor “no.” She simply exhibited a significant, happy and pleasant smile. Our Vedantha teaches us something which is exactly similar to this story. If you point at the wrong thing and if that is not the supreme reality, then you say “no.” Anything that is shown and is not the right thing should call forth the comment, “this is not that,” “this is not that,” and so on. When you put your finger on supreme reality, the Brahman, then you are in supreme bliss and happiness. Such is the nature of Vedantha that we are able to give today to you, young students, with pure and unwavering hearts. I am glad that you are attempting to acquire the good things of our culture and the teachings we are giving you. ON MAYA You are also being told a few things about Maya. Just as our own shadow will always accompany us and will not separate from us, so also Maya will always accompany God and will not separate from Him. There is a very good illustration of this fact in the Ramayana. At the time Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana and Sita, was moving in the forest. The forest was a thick one and there were no wide roads and they could only follow a narrow path; the way they were walking was such that Rama was going in front, immediately behind him was Sita, and Lakshmana came behind Sita. In this way, all the three, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana were moving forward along a narrow path. In order to be able to recognise and understand this situation, you hold up your three fingers. The first finger represents Rama, God or Paramatma. The second finger immediately behind represents Sita or Maya. The last finger in this row of three, represents Lakshmana or the Jiva. Paramatma, Maya and Jiva, these three are going along in a narrow path in the wild forest of life. After a little while, Lakshmana, whom we have symbolised as Jiva, has got the desire and the ambition to have a look at God or Paramatma. What is it that he has to do in order to fulfil his desire? There are only two ways of looking at Rama or getting his darshan. One is for Sita, who is in between, to move away a little and let Lakshmana have the darshan of Rama. Alternatively, if Sita insists on staying where she is, Lakshmana has to move aside a little. To get Sita to move away, he may have to push her out from the place where she is standing, but then he will be offending Rama. So what Lakshmana did was to pray to Sita in all humility and ask her to give him a chance of having darshan of Rama. Sita, in all her graciousness and in all her kindness, said, “Yes, certainly you can have the darshan of Rama,” and just stepped out a little. So if you get angry with Maya, and if you want to use force and your own strength on Maya and push her out of her place and then have the darshan of the Lord, you will not succeed. Maya then will play tricks with you. Not only that, God will not allow such a thing to be done. The only way, therefore, to fulfill your ambition is to recognise that Maya is the inseparable shadow of God Himself and pray in all humility and ask for an opportunity by which Maya will stand aside.
