Society Is the Reflection of the God You Adore

Society Is the Reflection of the God You Adore Wherever men gather with a purpose into a society, there you perceive the Divine, the sat, chit, and ananda (being, awareness, and bliss)! A personality has arisen; a clearer flash of reason is evident; a deeper joy fills the hearts. Immerse yourselves in them. This is real spiritual endeavor; not pining in solitude or reveling in the breaking of bonds with others of your kind, priding on your independence! Be with others, in others, for others. Be with all, for all, and in all. But, nevertheless, be unattached, be the unfailing source of Love. Therein lies success in spiritual endeavor, the triumph of spiritual discipline. Thus is the Sai in you manifested; thus is the world fostered; Sai within; thus is the heart purified enough to install. There are questions raised: Of what relation is society and social ties with spirit and its glory? Of what relation is the spirit and its glory with society and its tangles and trickeries? Such questions arise from erring minds. Spiritual endeavor must aim at individual illumination, social betterment and the divinization of the human community. This is extremely urgent and essential. While in society, the divinity inherent in man can blossom more quickly, more widely, more fragrantly. You recognize the world, but not God who is immanent in it! So, too, you see the individual but not the corpus that is immanent in society. All beings form the Universal Body of One God. Of course, society is not another concrete composite collective body! It is the expansion and expression of the Divine in each of its components, denotable, and enjoyable as One. Society is the awareness of this cognizable Divinity. So, the one should not flee from the many; the individual is not harmed by society. The one should rather see the many in a new light—the light that reveals that society is but God, who activates and prompts the composite whole. The one is rendered fuller by association with the many: he gains by losing himself in the many! All men are kith and kin, one family, one aspiration, one attempt at one acquisition. They are all equally Divine, all form the Universal Body of the One God. All are heirs to the ananda that this awareness can give. Of course, society does not happen when people gather by chance or get together with no common goal of good. The many-faceted skills and intelligence that are contributed by the many must flow pure and clear, untarnished by egoistic desires, along the channel of the spirit; then they will feed the roots of truth and goodness; they will ensure peace, for, all ideas of high and low will disappear. This is the criterion for a stable, strong, sweet society, not mere numbers. Be conscious of the God in each and in all; then inner equality will impress each so indelibly that the awareness will stay undisturbed. Shanti (Peace) will reign in each and all. Understand the atma or God that is your core; that will establish shanti in you, and you can share that shanti with others. What can you give others if your hearts are empty? Feel that you are a true limb of society. Do you intend to be in society? Do you crave to serve it and be served by it? Then seek the God in all; see the same in all. Yearn to worship that God by selfless service. That alone makes you a true limb of society. If you feel separate, distinct, outside and beyond society, you will run after name and fame, you will be enslaved by hate and partiality and ruined in the end. So, ease out those evil attitudes; feel that you are giving society what is its due, offering God His own gift of skill and intelligence. Vow to serve, to dedicate. Cultivate Love; society is the reflection of the God you adore, the God whose nature is ananda. Transform yourself into Love and become ananda. Adore society as the Divine Body; that is the truth, the eternal vision. ~ Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 11 (1971-72) Those who wish to serve society in the true spirit and experience the joy therefrom should go into society with dedication. They must undertake service activities according to their capacity and competence and should not overstretch themselves. They should not get involved in fundraising. Money is the cause of many differences and conflicts. Concentrate on service. There will be no lack of funds for any good cause. There are enough people in the Sai organization with resources. There is none poorer than the person who will not use his money for good purposes. Such men are a pitiable lot.

The True Meaning of Sharanagati/Surrender

The True Meaning of Sharanagati/Surrender It appears to Me that the real meaning of the word sharanagati or surrender has not been properly understood. Our elders, by the study of many scriptures and texts, have conveyed to us the meaning. Despite this, we get the impression that the word surrender means putting at the disposal of God our body, our mind, all our powers, and all that we have. We take it that “placing these before God” is the true meaning of the word surrender. This is not the correct and proper meaning of the word. Our body is not in our control at all. Our body, under some circumstances, is posing to us several problems. Under such circumstances, when the body is not under our control, it is not understandable how we can say that we will take such a body and surrender it to God. When we look at the mind, it is even worse. It leads us to many distorted meanings. While we are not only not in control of our mind even for one moment, but we are even slaves to our mind, and we foolishly enjoy the mind’s wanderings. Under such circumstances, to say that you are surrendering your mind to God is something quite un-understandable. When you must struggle so much to control your own mind, even for a short while, and when your attempts in this direction are often futile, to take such a mind and put it at the feet of God and say that “I am surrendering my mind to you,” seems to Me to be ridiculous. Let us take the case of your various organs. When the situation is that the mind, which is the ruler and controller of all your organs, is in such a condition, what is the point in talking about the organs and surrendering all your organs to God. So, when you say that you are surrendering to God your thought, your word, your deed, it is simply a kind of trivial satisfaction to yourself. This cannot represent the truth and the meaning of the word surrender. God also never wants you to surrender and hand over to Him everything that you own. In fact, God has never asked for such a thing. If you make a proper attempt to understand the true meaning of the word sharanagati or surrender, you will understand that sharanagati really relates to another aspect and it should be interpreted in the background and context of Divinity only. Only when you accept and when you believe that the Divine is present in every human being and in every living thing, that Divinity is omnipresent, can you understand the meaning of surrendering in thought, word, and deed and you will also become one with God. There is some justification for your talking of sharanagati or surrender when you are in full control of your mind, your words, and your body. As soon as you can recognize the aspects of the omnipresence and the omnipotence of God, the feeling of ego, the feeling that there is an “I”, which is a distinct thing, will disappear. ~Summer Showers 1972 Of course, you can and do announce, “I surrender my mind, my thoughts, my feelings and imaginings to God.” But your monkey-mind escapes from your hold; how then can you capture it and claim it and surrender it to God? What authority do you possess to offer something you are not master of? The whole process reminds one of the Telugu proverb about gift by son-in-law of the property owned by the mother-in-law. How can anyone give another what he does not own? Is your body under full control? When blood starts flowing out of a vein on your hand, you cannot stop the flow. You rush to a hospital and call out, “Doctor! Doctor! Tie a bandage!” When you suffer from a stroke, and limbs on one side are paralyzed, you are helplessly unable to repair them. How can you dedicate your body, which you cannot rule over? Such statements like surrendering body, mind, and heart are only rhetoric sanctioned by tradition and long usage. The act of surrender is often highlighted as atma-arpana [complete surrendering of the self]. The expression is even more ridiculous. When you are atma in essence, how can atma (self) offer it to itself? The body is a composite of the five elements; it cannot avoid disintegration, but the dweller within the body has no birth or death, no desire or despair, no attachment or bondage. In truth, that dweller is the God of Gods who resides as atma in you. This is what the seers have experienced. So atma-arpana is a meaningless expression. You have nothing in you or belonging to you that you can claim as yours to offer to God. Then, what does surrender of the self signify or imply? To experience God as Omnipresent, to be aware of nothing other than God—this is true surrender. To see God in everything, everywhere, always is true sharanagati. ~Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 15, Dasara, Vijayadashami

The I Principle

The I Principle The physical body that performs japam (Name recitation) or dhyanam (meditation) or the various other spiritual practices is but a water-bubble. The mind that is based upon this physical body is but a mad monkey. With the help of this mad-monkey mind and this water-bubble body, how can you hope to achieve the permanent atma? Japa, dhyana, bhajans (devotional singing), austerities, sacrifices—these are all methods for temporarily controlling the mind. But there is one practice that will have a permanent effect, and that is self-enquiry. You should go on enquiring “Who am I? Who am I?” until you reach the stage where you find out who you really are. The enquiry should go on thus, “Here is my body, here is my mind, my heart, my feelings, my intellect, my memory power. I am not any of these. Someone has praised me. Someone has censured me. But to whom does this pertain? Only to this physical body.” In this way you have to develop a sense of detachment and sacrificing nature. How can a physical body abuse another physical body? That is inert and this is also inert. How can inert things criticize or admonish? They cannot. How can they even worship anything? They cannot. But then can atma criticize another atma? That is absurd. One person who has seen God says, ‘God exists.’ Another person who has not seen God, says, ‘God does not exist’. If a person has not seen God, then how can he assert that God does not exist? Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 20 (1987) Those who have faith in the Gita should note that it has clearly declared that this world is ephemeral and “a vale of tears”, and enduring peace and bliss are not to be found by attachment to it. The source of lasting peace and happiness is within us. That is the atma (the Divine Self). It is by realizing it that peace and bliss have to be secured. One must constantly develop the consciousness that the atma is everything—the doer, the deed, and the outcome thereof. When the consciousness is broadened this way, in due course it leads to Self-realization. If your vision is broad, your destination will also be of the same magnitude. A narrow outlook can lead only to a narrow alley. If you are immersed all the time in the petty trifles of mundane existence, when will you ever understand the reality that is beyond the physical and the mental? Set your sight on the Supreme. The illumination will come in a flash. Everyone should develop the consciousness that “I am atma. I am Brahman”. When one says, “I am Brahman”, it is evident that there is “I” in Brahman. Who is that “I”? “Brahman” means pervasiveness. In declaring “I am Brahman”, the consciousness of all-pervasiveness should be developed. Brahman is all-pervasive. It is equally present everywhere. You should regard yourselves as all-pervasive, omni-self. Whatever you do, whatever you see, whatever you speak, saturate it with Divinity so that you may be aware of your reality. Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 20 (1987) The whole world appears to contain innumerable names and forms. One should not be enmeshed with these names and forms. It is only when the names and forms are set aside and the underlying source is identified that it is possible to recognize the truth. And that truth is tattwamasi (That Thou Art). That is Prajnanam Brahma (constant integrated awareness is Brahman). That awareness is Ayam Atma Brahma (This Self is Brahman). When you analyze the mahavakya (Divine axiom) tattwamasi, it will lead you to the awareness “I am That” and “That I am”. When you are able to realize this truth, you will find that the principle “I” underlies everything in the universe as the principle of unity. We have to recognize that “I” principle, which is universal. It is a futile exercise to get into arguments and counterarguments over this matter and waste one’s time. The only aspect you have to realize is “I am Brahman.” When somebody questions you who you are, the proper answer would be “I am I”. “I am the word, I am the form, and I am the name”—this “I” represents and explains everything. When somebody questions who you are, do not reply by quoting your name. The name represents the name given to the body. You are not the body. Hence reply, “I am I.” Everyone should strive to attain that state of unity.

“Unforgettable Experience”

“Unforgettable Experience” Dr. Baranowski is a scientist who has explored the recesses of the human body and mind, especially, the auras that form the bio‑magnetic field around the body and that reveal, when photographed and interpreted, the traits of emotional make‑up and the predominant features of the urges of the mind. Facts gleaned from a study of the holy men of India have played a major part in his research into the workings of the mind and in clinical hypnosis. Last July he was in Bangalore, India, for over a week, and he addressed the students of the Sri Sathya Sai College on the July 30th on the Phenomena of Man, illustrating his conclusions with slides depicting in color the human aura. That same evening, he spoke to the 665 teachers from Andhra Pradesh undergoing an Orientation Course on Spiritual Education in the Divine Presence of Bhagavan.  “I am very glad to be here this evening and talk to you on the Phenomena of Man. We are understanding more about man each day, and about the most important aspect of man—that simple four‑letter word, LOVE. I am sure you must have heard that some years ago a camera has been perfected for what is called Kirlian photography, which takes pictures of the energy bands that surround the human body. With this camera, we can photograph the `aura’ of man, which very often extends beyond the limits of his physical body. The aura is generated by the inside of a person, the energy, the love, the emotions. It comes out clear in the picture that we can now take. Since 1969, thousands of pictures have been taken and studied by means of this bio‑magnetic field radiation photography, and we can now say whether or when a person feels Love, extends Love, and showers Love. The halo or aura around people is of pronounced colors. Energy is white; when a person is full of Love, the aura around him is blue, and when the Love is pronounced it becomes pink. When a person is filled with hate, the blue becomes red. These bands can be seen, too, by trained eyes after a series of exercises. Time does not permit me to show you the photographic evidence of what I am saying, but let me assure you, we have it. Strange things happen to your body when you hate and are angry. In one moment of anger, you use enough electric energy to light a two‑cell flash‑bulb for three months! So, scientific and clinical evidence tells us to Love. Love is what you must develop and share with others. We can, with our perfected cameras, now photograph five different types of auras—physical, psychical, moral, spiritual, and intellectual. They are basically five, but the auras can change color as affected by the emotions. I have met over a hundred holy men is India. Too many of these holy men are involved with their own personal egos. Their auras show mostly their concern for themselves and their institutions. So, they are only a foot broad or perhaps two feet. I am not a devotee, I have come here from America as a scientist to see this man, Sai Baba. I saw Him on Sunday standing there, on the balcony, giving darshan to the devotees singing below. The aura Swami projected was not that of a man. The white was more than twice the size of any man’s, the blue was practically limitless, and then there were gold and silver bands beyond even those, far beyond this building, right up to the horizon. There is no scientific explanation for this phenomenon. His aura is so strong that it is affecting me, standing by the chair on which He is sitting. I can feel the effect and I have to wipe my arm off and on, as you must have noticed. It is very difficult for me to admit. I am a scientist. I have given over 6000 lectures in all parts of the world, but for the first time, believe me, my knees are shaking. The aura that emanates from Swami shows His Love for you. I have met a number of holy men, but no one of them has made himself as available to you as He does. That is a sign of greatness. Many years ago, we had a philosopher named Ralph Waldo Emerson in the United States. He was once asked, “What is success in life?” And he replied, “To laugh often and much, to win the affection of children, to find the best in others, to endure the betrayal of false friends, to make the world a little better place to live in than when we were born into it by rearing a little garden patch, improving some social condition, or helping a child to grow healthier. To know that one life breathes easier since you lived, that is success.” Swami has given you the key to success—the simple four‑letter word, LOVE. If ever I can use the phrase that I have seen LOVE walking on two feet, it is here.” (Dr. Baranowski resumed his seat, and Bhagavan began His Discourse. Dr. Baranowski sat watching Bhagavan with amazement and avidity. when the discourse was concluded, the Doctor asked for permission to speak for a little while more.) “I have been watching Swami while He was addressing you. The pink aura that was manifesting was so vast and strong that it went even beyond the wall behind His chair. It filled this big hall, embracing all of you gathered here. There can be no scientific explanation for this phenomenon. I have watched Him for a week now as He has walked among you morning and evening. I have seen His aura, pink in color, go into the person He is talking to or touching, and returning back into Him. This is because we draw on His energy. His energy seems to be endless. It spreads everywhere and can be drawn upon by everyone around. An ordinary man will

The Purity of Heart

The Purity of Heart No sadhana (spiritual practices) would help in realizing God if one is devoid of purity of the heart. The different kinds of sadhana like fasting, meditation, etc., would help to develop one’s faith in the omnipresent God who, in fact, resides as the indweller in you. People generally think that God gave darshan (being in holy Presence) to such and such person. But the truth is God never gives darshan to people who have no purity of the heart. Hence, if you wish to have the darshan of God, you must develop purity of the heart. All kinds of sadhana are meant only to attain purity. The moment you attain purity of the heart, the omnipresent God will manifest right in front of you. Unfortunately, today in the world there is a dearth of gurus who can firmly lead the seeker on the path of purity. They confine themselves to some mechanical techniques of meditation in exchange for money. In fact, one does not need to undertake any complex system of meditation. One can undertake the simple sadhana of constant contemplation on the omnipresent God. Few teach such simple methods nowadays. People listen to and read about several intriguing kinds of meditation and start a sadhana that catches their interest or imagination. Source: Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 38, 2005 Whatever scriptures one may study, whatever sadhanas one may practice or pilgrimages one may make, unless one succeeds in getting rid of the impurities in the heart, life will remain worthless and meaningless. Purification of the heart is the essence of all scriptural teachings and the basic goal of life. In this context, the Gita refers to swadharma (duties that accord with one’s nature) and paradharma (duties prescribed for others) and says that swadharma is conducive to the ennobling of the individual, while paradharma is fraught with fearful consequences. Swadharmo nidhanam shreyah Paradharmo bhayavaha—“Adhering to one’s dharma is commendable, while practicing paradharma is full of dangers.” Swadharma does not mean the dharma (duty) relating to any caste, community, race, or religion. Swa means atma. It is the dharma that is related to atma, that is swadharma (Divine duty). Paradharma is dharma related to the body consciousness. All duties associated with the external world are comprised in paradharma. These duties will inevitably involve one in the bonds of Samsara (worldly life). Though they may confer temporary pleasures, they are bound to result in fear and anxiety. Source: Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 17, 1984 What is it that you should observe on this New Year Day? Many such days have come and gone. But how far has there been a transformation in the heart? Many years have come and gone. But your hearts remain unchanged. The first task is to purify the heart. You should not be content with celebrating the New Year as a festive occasion. To enjoy a feast, you do not need a New Year. The New Year should be marked not by a feast but by the awakening of new and pure thoughts in the heart. Of what use is it to be concerned only about eating from dawn to dusk? What is the purpose of life? It is not eating, sleeping, and dying. You must control the senses and use them for sacred purposes. The power of the senses is derived from the Divine. The small human eye enables us to look at stars billions of miles away. Where is this power got? It is from the divine within you. Hence, everyone should always think of God, whatever one may do. Then one will be free from bad thoughts. Man must manifest his humanness by transcending the animal nature. Realize your inherent divinity. Regard the whole world as your field of action. You have come as a pilgrim to this world of action. Ensure that your pilgrimage proceeds on right lines.

Love Offerings - Devotees Writings to Lord Sri Sathya Sai

How Do You Know He Is God?

How Do You Know He Is God? In connection with a job search, I once met an elderly and well-educated person. I showed him a copy of a book that I wrote. He looked at the second page where it was noted that the book was dedicated to “Bhagavan, Amma and Nanna”. He asked me who the “Bhagavan” was. I stated that the Bhagavan is Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The scholar quickly and unhesitatingly remarked that Baba might be a great saint, but certainly not Bhagavan (God). After a while I collected the copy of my book and left the company of the scholar. I left the scholar, but I could not leave my thoughts. The scholar’s remark was all the time in my mind. Apparently, his contention was that Swami could not be God. A response came to my mind. He who can say that Swami is not God must have to prove that he has known God. Suppose, I see a metal and say that it is not gold, it is implied that I know gold. Similarly, if someone says that Swami is not God, then it is implicit that he can recognize God. Indeed, the individual ought to be knowing God thoroughly well, otherwise he cannot distinguish God from others who are not. So, I have decided that if someone says that my Swami is not God, I will simply ask him, “How do you know?” Frankly, the fact that I have discovered that question has pleased me for a while only. After all, just as I can ask, “How do you know Swami is not God?” I may be easily subjected to the counter question, “How do you know He is God?” Naturally it is very desirable to know the answer to this question rather than to learn to raise the previous one. Until I progress in my sadhana and become closer and closer to Him so that I can see Him in absolute unmanifest as well as relatively manifest Swami, I cannot really know the answer to the question: “How do you know Swami is God?” But though it is not needed to begin my sadhana, simply to enjoy the bliss that Swami gives me, I ought to have some answer, more down to earth, of course, to the said question. Also, it is not palatable to my ego to evade the answer to the question by saying that sadhana alone will give the answer (though this is the true answer). Hence, I came to a conclusion. Until one can identify through sadhana the manifestation of the Absolute in the form of Swami, one needs some transient working proof to cultivate the faith that Swami is God, and to be guided by this faith on the path of sadhana. Most Sai devotees, I believe, have used the following characteristics of Swami as the proof of His Divinity and to say that He is God. It is important to recognize why the above characteristics are noticed as proof that Swami is God. I think it is because none of us wish to consider anything less than the above as characterizing God. This is so because the ego in us does not permit us to see God in everyone and everywhere. We direly need a personal God because we like to be corrected, questioned, patted, and loved by someone much higher than the average human beings. For all these reasons we see Swami as God. Clearly this is not the real proof. Real proof can be obtained only through sadhana and only when it can be realized that the Absolute has indeed manifested as Swami and when it is realized that the Absolute is also manifest in all creation. Thanks to Swami, I have learnt one thing. Every time I meet people who say that Swami is not God, I have learnt to respect them and not to argue with them. For, what I know is no superior to what they think they know. I cannot prove and they cannot disprove. If my faith gives me joy and bliss, they, too, get something out of their faith. For common people like me, the nice distinctions between yogi, saint, sage, incarnation, and Absolute God are totally irrelevant. All of them are divine just as one’s mother, father, and teacher are. Twameva Sarvam Mama Sai Deva. —Bhanoji Rao, Washington DC, U. S. A., 23‑24 November 1979Source: Sanathana Sarathi, March 1980

Divine Experiences - Omnipresence of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai

The Miracle in Reverse

The Miracle in Reverse Long ago, about 2,000 years in the past, Lord Jesus Christ trod on the surface of the earth in the small region of Palestine. He only preached for 3 years. He spoke to the simple folk in a very simple language, in the form of stories and parables to show them the way to the truthful path of life and righteousness. His life on the earth was a great message for humanity. At a marriage party, when the wine being served was exhausted, Jesus turned water into wine. Last year a couple stayed in one of the flats in Prasanthi Nilayam [abode of peace] and the man, who was a habitual drunkard, took along with him two bottles of whisky in his baggage to the room. In the night he started drinking in front of Swami’s photo that was hanging on the wall. He poured the drink in a glass and started drinking to Baba’s health in spite of his wife telling him that he should not drink in the holy place. But when he drank he found that the liquor had turned into water. As he could not remain without his drink, he opened the new bottle and to his utter amazement that, too, had turned into water! Therefore, the man had to remain without his crutch for that fateful night. The next day both the husband and wife attended the bhajan meeting and Baba came to him and made similar gestures [as if raising a glass to His mouth] as the man had made in front of Baba’s photo while drinking the liquor! He was amazed and shaken by Baba’s omnipresence and sat silent with folded hands. After that the couple left Prasanthi Nilayam. From then onward he gave up this bad habit for good. ~A. Divine Experiences - Omnipresence of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai

The Miracle in Reverse

The Miracle in Reverse “Then, suddenly from among the crowd, an old man emerged. He shouted in a loud commanding voice, ‘Give the child to me’. There were two women and one man with him, who also pleaded, ‘Give the child to him, lady! He is famous as a curer of children’s diseases.  He has saved many children from death.’ And, so, losing all fear, my wife handed over the child to him.” This is from a letter written by S. R. V on 28th November 1958. The incident happened on 25th November 1958. The ‘old man’ was no other than Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Himself. The two women and the man who accompanied Him were also creations of His grace and power, while He appeared in disguise in His mission of mercy!  …Let us now look a little closer at this strange story, this leela [play] of Bhagavan. A devotee, S. R. V. from Bangalore, had come to Puttaparthi with his wife and child for the Birthday Festivities of Bhagavan, on 23rd November 1958. He left Prasanthi Nilayam on the 25th at 12.45 p.m. taking leave of Baba and receiving from His hands the Vibhuti [sacred ash] that He gets by a mere wave of the Hand as well as a few oranges. At 5:30 p.m. that evening, when some devotees gathered round Him at Prasanthi Nilayam, Baba told them a dramatic tale of ‘death’ and ‘rebirth!’ He said that S. R. V.’s child, Geetha Sudha, called Sudha for short, had died on the way to Bangalore at 2:45 p.m., but He had left His body at Puttaparthi, hurried to the place, manifested Himself as an old man, and saved the child. His narration was full of details and very clear, and devotees who keep diaries of their experiences have recorded every word of it. He said that the child was sleeping on the back seat; that a scratching sound was heard by the mother; that when she turned she was shocked to find the baby stiff and blue and practically lifeless; that the moving car was stopped; that the time was 2:45 p.m.; that the place was between Palasamudram and Bagepalli; that a huge crowd of villagers gathered on account of the wailing; that everyone was advising all kinds of remedies and cures; that a bus proceeding to Hindupur came on the scene, was stopped and added to the confusion; that as soon as the bus moved off, He appeared as an old man and demanded that the child be given over to Him, saying that He heard about the tragedy and had come running to the place; that He asked the party for a little Vibhuti because He was sure they had it; that keeping the child on His lap, He showed it His real form, upon which the baby, as usual on all occasions when He took the child up in His hands, cried; that He pretended to go through some curative rituals and handed the baby to the overjoyed parents; that S. R. V. thanked Him profusely for His service; that he offered to pay Him a rupee [Indian currency], which He refused to accept; that he pressed upon Him an orange out of the five or six that He Himself had given him at noon while leaving Him at Puttaparthi, and that after invoking upon that fruit the calamity that had pursued the baby, He threw it away before reaching the Nilayam! On the 28th of November, a long letter written by S. R. V detailing the entire incident was received at Puttaparthi and it was given over by Baba to be read by those who had heard Him describing the miracle three days earlier within a few hours of the ‘death’ and ‘re-birth.’ What a surprise it was to read in the letter that the child was sleeping on the back seat (!) there was heard a scratching sound (!) that the body was stiff, that the child was breathless, that the villagers ran in from all directions, that there were suggestions galore, that the Hindupur bus was stopped at the scene (!) and then, the para quoted above! “Then, suddenly from among the crowd, an old man emerged……………” The letter continued, “The old man placed the child on His lap and she began to cry (!) He also heated a copper wire and applied it to the brow. We thanked him much for saving the child and I asked him to accept at least a rupee as a reward (!). But despite our best efforts he refused to accept it. I then gave him an orange from among the ones which Baba had given us while leaving. He asked us to leave for Bangalore without worry and do Arati to our Ishtadevata—Venkataramanaswami as soon as we reached home. I asked him his name and he gave it as Jodi Adipalli Somappa.” S. R. V. concluded his letter thus, “I am now certain that the Old Man was no other than Baba Himself. I also suspect that the three villagers who asked us very forcibly to give Sudha into His Hands were also ad hoc creations of His leela. My inference is that Baba must have gone on a ‘trance’ about 2:30 or 2:45 p.m. on the 25th.” We who had heard Baba relate the whole thrilling story on the 25th evening itself have no doubt in our minds that Jodi Adipalli Somappa is no other than Baba Himself, Baba manifesting Himself 48 miles away to save the child! Om Jodi Adipalli Somappaya Namah. . . Mysterious are the ways of the Lord.  Words are of no avail if one desires to describe Him. The mind is too feeble an instrument to measure His glory… aprapya manasa saha [our mind is unable to conceive]! ~N. KasturiSource: Sanathana Sarathi, May 1959

Bhagwan Shri Sathya Sai Baba spiritual guidance
Divine Experiences - Omnipresence of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai

Blessings

Blessings Guru in Hinduism means a personal spiritual teacher or guide. The syllable ‘Gu’ means darkness or ignorance and the syllable ‘Ru’ stands for repeller of darkness. So a Guru is the light of awareness that removes the darkness of ignorance and reveals the ultimate truth of the Supreme Self. Guru is also a guide who ensures that the disciple is sailing toward the right direction. “Guru bin gyan na upje, guru bin mile na mokshaGuru bin likhe na satya ko, guru bin mite na dosh” Meaning: “Without Guru, no one obtains spiritual knowledge or achieves salvation. Without Guru, no one can see truth or have his doubts removed.” I am a humble devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba. Now let me share one of my experiences. When I was staying temporarily in Koramangala area of Bangalore [now Bengaluru, India], I used to visit various temples nearby, like temples of Ganapati, Raghavendraswami, Hanuman, Yellammadevi, Nagdevta, etc. I wanted to visit a Sai Baba temple but could not find any at walkable distance. Then I thought that I will request my husband to take me to a Sai temple by car someday. It was on 23rd November 2018, that I had this strange experience. After visiting the temples, as I was walking back home I realized that I had gone one lane ahead of my house. But I did not turn back. I kept on walking on as if in a trance. Then finally my steps stopped, I reached a building with a signboard “Sai Sparshan” where there were photos of both Shirdi Sai Baba and Sathya Sai Baba. I was really surprised to be there. I could hear devotional songs and Aarti songs about Sai Baba. Puja (prayers) and ‘Havan’ (fire rituals) were going on there outside the building. After attending the puja for some time, I came back home. The next day morning I again went to the building. I was glad to see that it was a small temple of Sai Baba. There were idols of Ganapati, Sathya Sai Baba, and Shirdi Sai Baba. Inside the temple there was nobody—just God and me! So I prayed to my heart’s content and thanked God for bringing me there. Then an old man came and gave me ‘laddu’ as ‘prasadam’ [consecrated food] saying that yesterday (23rd November) was the birthday celebration of Shri Sathya Sai Baba who is believed to be the incarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba! Then I realized that I was guided by my Guru Sai Baba to reach there on that auspicious day. This strange experience changed my life. I trust in Sai Baba and strongly believe that Sai Baba is always there with me. Whenever I had to face obstacles, painful experiences, or trials in life, I believe that Baba will take care of me. When I write about Sai Baba, or when I sing Sai bhajans on stages or temples, I could see the affectionate smile on my Baba’s face! And when I am blessed with awards and recognitions, I can feel Baba’s blessing hand on my head! Sai Baba is like a father to a humble devotee like me. Definitely, Sai Baba is the Guru in my life who teaches and guides me and inspires me to achieve more and more! OM SAI RAM!                                                                             ~Dr. Nalini Janardhanan
