Four great miracle stories

Four great miracle stories By R.D. Awle Here are four representative stories, from among the thousands I’ve heard and read, which reveal a glimpse of Sai Baba’s divine power, compassion and sense of humor.  The first is the account of Bhagwandas Daswani, a prosperous businessman of Hong Kong (reprinted from Face to Face with God, by V.I.K. Sarin, former senior journalist at one of India’s leading newspapers): “On May 10, 1977, I was struck with a massive heart attack.  I was admitted to the Queen Mary Hospital on May 11, and I learned later that at 4 a.m. on the same day Baba had called my son, who was studying in Swami’s College at Whitefield, and told him, “Go to Hong Kong immediately, as your father is having a little heart trouble.” Daswani said, “I actually died for two minutes and was revived by doctors.” Although Daswani came around, there was no improvement in his condition and he was confined to the Intensive Care Unit.  On May 20, he suffered a relapse and started hemorrhaging from the anus.  He was losing about four pints of blood a day.  He had drips in both arms and a pad over his heart.  The hemorrhaging continued for three days and by May 24, his family had lost hope for his life, and so had the team of doctors. “On the morning of May 25, at exactly 4:10 a.m.,” recalled Daswani, “Sathya Sai Baba walked through the wall of the room and sat on the bed. came pouring out of his hand in a never-ending flow.  With the vibhuti bath I suddenly felt a surge of strength all through my body.  I was completely baffled by the appearance of Baba in the room, and thought I was dreaming or hallucinating.  I therefore said, ‘Baba are you really here or am I dreaming?’  He said, ‘I am here all right.  What would you like me to do?’  I said, ‘Just put me on that couch over there next to the bed, so that I know I am not dreaming.’  He then lifted me up as though I was a feather and placed me on the couch.  The drips in my arm remained intact, nothing was disturbed.  Baba then left the same way as he had come. “I then rang the night bell to call the staff nurse.  A horde of nurses came rushing into the room.  Their astonishment was beyond description.  ‘How did you get here?’ they asked.  ‘I walked,’ I said, aware that it would be impossible for them to believe the truth.  and the staff kept questioning me as to what had happened.  Finally an Indian doctor showed up and he said to me, ‘Look, I am an Indian.  You can tell me what happened.’  I told him, and he kept my secret.  On May 29 I was able to walk by myself to another ward.  I made a complete recovery, and what is more, my diabetes has disappeared and my blood sugar is normal.  I owe my eternal gratitude to Bhagavan Baba.”1 Here is the testimony of Kitty Lamonte of Scotland (as related in Divine Glory, by V. Balu & Shakuntala Balu): “My story begins sometime last summer, when I first became aware of Baba.  I was invited to visit some Indian friends of a friend of mine and they talked so lovingly and honestly about Baba that I decided to read more about him.  I read ‘The Holy Man and the Psychiatrist’ [by Samuel Sandweiss], and in fact used it almost like a Bible, in that I read the writings of Baba everyday.  “At this time I had something of a drinking problem and was consuming far more alcohol than was good for me, but was unable to stop.  I decided that I would enlist the help of Baba, so for three nights I sat there with the book, Baba’s photograph and the whisky.  I poured my drink on the 27th November, at 11:45 p.m. and sat down to watch T.V.  I put my hand on the book, looked at the photograph and said, ‘You really will have to help me to stop this.’ ‘Who has been in here?  And what is all this dust all over the bed, and all over you?’ they asked.  I said, ‘Don’t ask me.  Just collect that dust and put it in a paper bag for me.’  They did this and collected one and a half kilograms of vibhuti.

False Materializations?

False Materializations? Some people have accused Baba of “faking” materializations, saying, for instance, that they have seen Him clandestinely pull a ring from under His cushion and then wave His hand and pretend to miraculously manifest the ring.  Although these stories may just be more lies from the jealous ones, let’s assume, for the sake of discussion, that Baba does occasionally throw some cheap magic tricks in among His miracles, and allows a few devotees to glimpse His sleight of hand.  What could be the reason for it? First of all, there could be many devotees whom Baba wishes to bless with a faith-enhancing gift, who are simply not karmically ripe enough to receive a divinely manifested object.  (Most souls in this age are immersed in dense worldly ignorance, and are neither spiritually ready nor karmically deserving to witness genuine miracles.)  So, although Baba definitely has the power to manifest anything He wishes, and transform one object into another with a single puff of His breath (something He has proved time and time again for decades), for certain souls He might instead engage in a bit of beginner’s magic, and pull a ring from under His cushion rather than materializing it.  This would enable those devotees to receive the gifts from His hand that they craved, thereby giving their faith a boost, while satisfying the requirements of the Law of Karma. By allowing one or more devotees to glimpse the trick, my guess is that Baba would simply be exposing a doubt that was already lurking within their minds, bringing it to the surface so it could be faced directly – and in the process giving them a severe test.  I imagine He might be saying, ‘So, you claim to be My devotee!  But after all these years of experiencing my omniscience and omnipresence and witnessing my miracles first hand, and after hearing and reading thousands of accounts of the healings and blessings I have bestowed on others – you still doubt Me? Then perhaps you are not worthy to be My devotee.  Here, you see?  I am a fake!  I have pulled the ring from under the cushion!  Now, isn’t it best you leave Me and begin denouncing Me to the world?  Then other immature souls will also stay away.  V e r y  happy!’ When the doubting devotee is thus challenged, he will either make the choice to leave Baba, or else receive the grace to remember Baba’s Divinity, infinite power and mischievous nature – and then cast aside all doubts and emerge with fully renewed faith.  Using such a test, Baba can filter out devotees whose faith is only ‘miracle deep’ and shallow in true devotion and understanding, while retaining more mature devotees whose faith and devotion are based on a profound soul experience of who He is – a faith unshakable by such leelas.  (I would guess that only those of the second variety are ready for the full-out quest for Self-Realization, the ultimate Gift, the one Baba took birth to give.)  Another possible outcome: by shocking a devotee out of his ‘miracle-based faith’, Baba’s tricky test could serve as a wake up call from the duality laden Guru-disciple dream, breaking the devotee’s attachment to worship of the external Guru, and leaving him with no recourse but to put all his focus on the non-dual Atman – which is, after all, the true spiritual goal.  Through that sudden shift of focus onto the Self within, the devotee just might find Baba in a whole new way; it could even propel him all the way to Enlightenment – to the permanent realization that Paramatma Sai is his own indwelling ‘I’. And remember, to bring us to Enlightenment is the Guru’s one essential task – their very raison d’etre – and they will accomplish that task ‘by any means necessary’, including lying, trickery, the breaking of taboos, and any other available method of shocking us out of our complacency and making us thoroughly miserable in our spiritual egos! (Sometimes a painful whack from Zen Master Baba can be far more valuable than a miracle…) One thing to keep in mind: intentionally bringing up doubts in the devotees’ minds is a time-tested technique used by many Gurus; I have personally experienced it with Ammachi, and also read about Neem Karoli Baba using the same method.  What better way to bring the devotee face to face with his own Doubting Thomas, and challenge him to rise above all doubts into the true Atmic quest, into unflinching faith, surrender and Divine Love? Knowing Baba’s playful Krishna nature, I certainly wouldn’t put it past Him to be playinggames with His materialization leelas.  He is, after all, an embodiment of Mahamaya, the Creatrix of the whole cosmic illusion, the One who is fooling all beings!  Yet He is also the supreme Truth, and the supreme bliss – and if we can learn to enjoy His mischievous games as much as He does, without insisting He play by our rules, I believe we’ll have gone a long way towards attaining that bliss, which is our true eternal natureI know a young man from Mexico who witnessed what he thought was a fake materialization done by Baba.  He went into anguish over the doubt it created in his mind, and secretly prayed that Baba would clear it away with something truly ‘unfakable’, such as making water pour out of His hand!  The next day Baba called him in for a private interview, rolled up His sleeve and held out His down-turned hand – and suddenly, a stream of water poured out of His palm like water from a tap!My friends, is it wise to doubt Him? For those who have studied Sai Baba in depth and witnessed His materializations first hand, there can be no doubt that the vast majority of them are bona fide miracles.  I and many of my friends have seen numerous unquestionably-genuine miracles up close: necklaces and watches literally popping

Divine Leelas

Divine Leelas Our Guru, Everyone’s Guru Once Seva workers of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization reached the outskirts of a remote battered village with packets of food, medicine, clothes and blankets. When they arrived at the village, it was past noon and the entire area was submerged. It was still drizzling. The volunteers stood at the gate hoping someone would come forward to show them where the survivors were most in need of their services and goods. Finally, some villagers saw them and came running. The volunteers thought that help had come and they would be directed to where they could be of the most use, but the villagers began snatching and grabbing the rescue items. The volunteers stood there dumbstruck not knowing whom to pacify and whom to control. They were themselves drenched and exhausted. Then a Girl appeared and pacified the villagers. She told sweetly the necessity of being patient and disciplined and to allow the helping team to carry out their mission. She enabled the volunteers to reach those with the most urgent needs first, such as first aid, medicine and food, and helped organize the entire rescue mission. When the villagers became impatient, she spoke a few kind words and also lent a helping hand in the distribution of food packets and medicine. Throughout the day, she led the team through the muddy and flooded roads to every nook and corner where people were who required help. She never looked tired and her face was always radiating with gratitude and loving-kindness. The Seva Dal team finished their work and sat down for some rest. Suddenly one of the Seva Dal team members recollected that while the girl had taken them to all the needy people and helped them distribute food and medicine she had not taken any food for herself. They asked her why she had not taken any food packet. Hesitatingly, the girl said that her GURU had told her that duty towards others should be the prime concern and when that duty is fulfilled He himself will take care of their needs. Such a small girl, staying in a poor condition and imparting the knowledge of the highest teachings reflecting implicit faith in her Guru held the team in awe and admiration. They inquired about the Guru and also wanted to know how she had met her guru. The girl said, “I have not met or even seen my guru personally but I have his photo given to me by my teacher who stays in the nearby town.” The team members got more curious and asked her the name of her guru. “Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba,” came the prompt reply. “I am a Bal Vikas student,” she said further with a voice soaked in reverence and pride. Everyone of the Seva Dal members were in Tears. Swami always and every time reminds all of us, “There is no other quality nobler than Love in this world. The highest spiritual practice is to transform this love into service, Serve and help the Needy, Swami will be closest to you when you do Service and help the Needy”. Om Sai Ram. SWAMI LEAVES HIS BODY AND COMES BACK TEN MINUTES LATERNarrated by a Dear Sai Brother: (A Trayee experience, happened when one of our sirs Devsen was a student) We, students, have great experiences at Prashanthi and Vrindavan. But the most memorable experiences have been at TRAYEE BRINDAVAN, the official residence of SAI BABA, where we spent the closest moments with HIM… SAI BABA during the sessions in Trayee is most informal, asking students individually about their personal problems, their families and other things. It was during such a session that the following incident, which shocked the students beyond measure, giving them an indication of the kind of phenomenon SAI BABA is, took place. The students had assembled in TRAYEE and Baba was on HIS way from HIS room to take HIS seat. Before that session Baba had given a discourse on the purpose of life — the need for an individual to experience his divine SELF, only after such an experience does a person reach the end of the cycle of birth and death. As a part of the discourse Baba also asked the assembly to keep reminding themselves of they (all of them) being a part of the divine from which everything emerged and everything will one day merge into. As soon as Baba came into the room, He looked around at everyone and stood silently for sometime. Then HE started asking each one those present there, “who are you… who are you”. Surprised at such a question, many replied ” Swami, raja … Swami Shyamkumar” etc, many others said remembering the discourse of Swami, telling all to remind themselves of they being a part of the divine, said “Swami, I am Sai Baba”. “Swami, Any drop taken out of the ocean has the same quality as that of the ocean. Since we all have emerged form you Swami, we are all same as you.” so saying they justified their answer. Baba then said, “All right if you really are Sai Baba, then leave your body and show me.”. Taken aback at such a command from Baba, the students did not reply back. Obviously none present there could ever think of doing what SAI BABA had asked tem to do. “Come on, Come on”, He commanded them back. Finding the silence still pervading in the hall, He said ” As you experience your divine self, you will have all powers given to you to perform do acts that are above the laws of nature.”…So saying He got up all of a sudden and said ” SEE I AM GOING TO LEAVE MY BODY”, a moment later He collapse into the chair, leaving everyone in the room shell-shocked. Commotion, pandemonium, confusion… Hell seems to have broken loose. Almost all the people assembled there stood up in their places and tried to rush

Baba’s miracle at Akhanda Bhajan

Baba’s miracle at Akhanda Bhajan Nine families started an Akhanda Bhajan Mandali in 1944, consisting mostly of our relations. We had bhajans every thursday evening regularly. In 1946 , we requested swami to attend our first annual Akhanda bhajan, which He did. Swami stayed with us for full 24 hours of the bhajans. We had originally planned the Bhajans for about 150 people with our limited means. As Bhagavan attended the function, over 500 people attended, including several distinguished devotees who came with swami. We had a problemas to how to give prasadam to all of them, as we had not anticipated such a situation. We represented our problem to Swami. Baba with his merciful love, came to the kitchen and blessed the food. after the functionwas over we served Pongal to over 1000 people till the evening. it never got finished. This miracleis one of the earliest experiences in our lives, which is still green in our memory. We did this annual Akhanda Bhajan for twenty five years continuously. Once or twice Baba could not attend the function, but we took into account only the years when He attended. Bhajans becomes global In the year 1974, we celebrated the 25th year of our Akhanda Bhajan in the golden Jubilee Hall, Lalbagh. By then our Akhanda bhajan had become very popular and ever increasing numbers of people attended the function. Nearly 10.000 people attended the 1974 celebrations. Swami, in his concluding speech, declared that in future instead of our family conducting this akhanda bhajan, the entire world should conduct the bhajan on the same day . He materialised a Navarathamala and gave it to me as a benedictory blessing to our family. From the book Sanathana Sarathi, page 128 from the chapter ” five decades at the lotus Feet” from Dr.R.S.Padmanabhan. Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust Bhagavan’s 70 th birthday. Baba’s Holi Meal in Hemadpant’s House

Baba’s Holi Meal in Hemadpant’s House On Holi festival in 1917, Baba appeared in the dream of Hemadpant at his house in Bandra and told him that he would be coming to his house to participate in the Holi meal. Hemadpant told his wife about the dream and asked her to prepare food for one more person. The festivities of Holi were over. Arrangements were made for serving the meal. They reserved a seat for Baba. All the members of the family sat down for the meal. After offerings were made to God, ghee was served; they were about to start eating, when someone knocked the door. Hemadpant opened the door and found two persons standing there. They handed over to him a photo of Shirdi Sai Baba with a request to keep it safely. They asked him to finish his meals first and then they could discuss the details about the photo later on; they left the place. Hemadpant was surprised at the arrival of Baba in the form of photo, exactly at meal time. He shed tears of joy. He felt happy that what Baba had told him in the dream had come true in this manner. He immediately put the photo in the place set apart for Baba. All the food items were kept before the photo and only after offering them to Baba, did the others eat. The same day at the same time Baba told Shama at Shirdi that he had a sumptuous meal at Bandra in Hemadpant’s house. Shama could understand Baba’s words only after sometime when Hemadpant went to Shirdi. Now let us see how the photo was delivered at Hemadpant’s house. A long time back, a saint by name Abdul Rehman gave a lifesize framed photo of Baba to Ali Mohammed. After sometime, Ali’s brother-in-law fell sick. Someone said that if the photos of saints were put in the sea, the illness would subside. So he sent for this manager and asked him to collect all such photos in his house and also in the houses of relatives and put them in the sea. After some days Ali Mohammed came home and was surprised to find that Baba’s photo was still there in the wall. He began to think to whom it should be given. As per Baba’s order given to him through his thoughts, the photo was handed over to Hemadpant.

Baba’s appendicitis operation

Baba’s appendicitis operation A pilgrim to Puttaparthi suddenly developed acute appendicitis. At the time, there was no hospital there nor was there a surgeon, so Sai Baba was asked to come to the room where the patient lay groaning. He waved his hand in the air and produced a surgical knife out of nowhere. A second wave materialized vibhuti which he used as an anaesthetic. With these aids he performed the operation to remove the inflamed appendix. Then the surgical knife vanished into thin air. He applied the vibhuti on the wound which healed immediately, leaving only a small scar.

Baba reveals His omnipresence

Baba reveals His omnipresence Baba was talking to some of the institute students (studying in SRI SATYA SAI INSTITUTE OF HIGHER LEARNING). They had just returned from holidays. Baba suddenly turned one of the students and asked — “kyon re, picture dekne gaya tha — theatre mein (did you not go for a movie in a theater).” The student said — “Nahi Baba, mein to ghar par he tha. (No Baba, I was at home).” Baba then swirled his hand in the air and created a picture of the student sitting in the same theater to which he had gone . The picture also showed the position he was sitting in most of the time when he was watching the film with his hometown friends. Baba asked the student — “Ab kya bolta hai? (What do you say now?)” The student fell at Baba’s feet saying — “Baba, maf karo.Galti hogayi. (Baba, forgive me. It’s my mistake.)” Baba said — “Tum kya karte ho, Kaha jate ho,Sai sab jaanta hai. (What you do, where you go, Sai knows everything.)” Like this Baba has revealed so many times his omnipresence. He is as he always says– “One in all. All in one.”

Baba on His miracles

Baba on His miracles “You elaborate in your lectures the unique powers of Sai, the incidents that are described as ‘miracles’ in books written about Me by some persons. But I request you not to attach importance to these. Do not exaggerate their significance, the most significant and important power is, let Me tell you, my Prema (Love) and My Sahana, (fortitude). I may turn the sky into earth or earth into sky but that is not the sign of Divine Might. It is the Prema, effective, universal, ever-present, that is the unique sign. When you attempt to cultivate and propagate this Love and this Fortitude, trouble and travail will clog your steps. You must welcome them, for without them, the best in you cannot be drawn out.” “I use My Shakti (power) to attract people and to draw them towards the Godward path. These miracles are merely baits with which I lure them towards Me. Once their faith is firmly established, they begin to look beyond the miracles and slowly start stretching their hands out for what I have really come to give- Knowledge and Bliss.” “There can be no limit for Sai Power, no hindrance, no opposition or obstacle. You may believe it or you may not, but, Sai Power can transform earth into sky, the sky into earth. only there is no call for that transformation. This Divine behaviour is far distinct from the mean exhibitionistic tricks of the inferior powers. This is spontaneous manifestation, not those that are calculated to collect customers and exploit the ignorant.” “Those who profess to have understood me, the scholars, the yogis, the pundits, the jnanis, all of them are aware only of the least important, the casual external manifestations of an infinitesimal part of that power, namely, the miracles! They have not desired to contact the source of all power and all wisdom that is available here. They are satisfied when they secure a chance to exhibit their book-learning and parade their scholarship in Vedic lore, not realising that the person from whom the Vedas emanated is in their midst, for their sake. They even ask, in their pride, for a few more chances. This has been the case in all ages. People may be very near (Physically) to the Avatar, but they live out their lives unaware of their fortune; they exaggerate the role of miracles, which are as trivial, when compared to my glory and majesty, as a mosquito is in size and strength to the elephant upon which it squats. Therefore, when you speak about these miracles , I laugh within myself out of pity that you allow yourself so easily to lose the precious awareness of my reality.” “I am determined to correct you only after informing you of my credentials. That is why I am now and then announcing my nature by means of miracles, that is, acts which are beyond human capacity and human understanding. Not that I am anxious to show off my powers. The object is to draw you closer to me, to cement your hearts to me”.  “You may infer from what you call my miracles that I am causing them to attract and attach you to me and me alone. They are not intended to demonstrate or publicize; they are merely spontaneous and concomitant proofs of divine majestys.” “This Sathya Sai Incarnation is one where you see the full manifestation and exercise of all the sixteen attributes of a Poorna Avatar. This happened only once before, at the time of Krishna Avatar. I am the Embodiment of Shiva and Shakti, that is Universal Consciousness and Universal Energy. And I show evidences of both to the fullest and maximum extent”. “Do not crave from me trivial material objects: but crave for Me, and you would be rewarded. Not that you should not receive whatever objects I give as signs of grace out of the fullness of love. I shall tell you why I give these rings, talismans, rosaries, etc. It is to mark the bond between me and those to whom they are given. When calamity befalls them, the article comes to me in a flash and returns in a flash, taking from me the remedial grace of protection. That grace is available to all who call on me in any Name or Form, not merely to those who wear these gifts. Love is the bond that wins grace.  My miracles are part of the unlimited power of God and are in no sense the product of yogic powers which are acquired. They are natural, uncontrived. There are no invisible beings helping me. My divine will bring the object in a moment. I am everywhere.”

Baba helps deliver a baby

Baba helps deliver a baby An aged man sitting for darshan got up as soon as Baba came towards him and said — “Baba, daughter-in-law not well. She is pregnant and doctors are saying one of the two will survive. Please save her and the child ”. Baba said — “ Ek nahi–Do hain (not one, two are there). Don’t worry, Baba will save all.” The man left leaving all his worries at Baba’s feet. The very next day Baba gave a dream to both the man’s son and his daughter-in-law. He said, “Worry not. Baba has taken up your case. Your operation will be done but don’t go to any hospital.” Both the wife and the husband thanked Baba for His grace and the next day after bhajans they placed a letter at Baba’s photograph agreeing to follow his command. Again the next day Baba appeared in the to-be-mother’s dream in doctor’s uniform and materialised all surgical instruments (required for operations) and proceeded to operate on her. In between He would speak to her: “Abhi operation karne wala Hai” — Now I will start operation. “Abhi baccha nikalne wala Hai”    — Now the child is going to be delivered and so on and so forth. Once the operation was completed, Baba showed her both the children in the dream, snapped his figures and said “ Delivery over. Now get up.” The woman woke up from dream to find two cute twins (looking exactly the same as Baba had shown them in the dream) by her side and a letter in one of the child’s hands in which Baba suggested the names of the children and ended it signing — “WITH LOVE, SAI BABA”

Sai Baba healed a crippled boy

Sai Baba healed a crippled boy Let me narrate my own experiance about Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I am a retired Railway Officer from Indian Railways, now residing with my son in USA. Aged 76 plus. I am ofcourse a native of Hyderabad & am a devotee of Baba since 1965. In july 1974 I happened to visit Puttaparthy along with my wife for Gurupornima celebrations. On the following day of Gurupornima (sorry, I do not remember the exact date), we all sat in the open on the sands just in front of Prasanthi Nilayam in the morning hours for Darshan. As usual Baba came from his room on the top floor of Prasanthi Nilayam and started walking towards ladies side first. In the front row was an Assamese lady sitting with her crippled son aged abt 9 to 10 yrs. It appears voulanteers used to carry this boy every time to assit the mother as the boy was crippled & just canot walk. Baba went ahead, but suddenly made an U turn & came to this lady & enquired abt the boy. When she explained abt him Baba gently took hold of the boys arms, made him stand erect, patted him, applied vibhuthi on his fore head and asked him to walk. Immediately he started walking gently with a to & fro walk within that area much to the delight & surprise of those present. The mother was in tears unable to express her joy at this miracle. Later on the mother explained to the gathered few including me abt their efforts to get the boy cured at various Hospitals including Bombay but failed in their efforts. It’s only after hearing abt Baba, as a last resort she undertook the journey all the way from Assam to Puttaparthy along with the boy. & here she got the cure, though she waited for abt 10 days. Till then, I only heard of Baba’s miracles, but this was my first ecperiance of witnessing His miracle personally from whence I developed more faith in Baba’s Godhood. Abburi Balakrishna Rao—
