Shree Moteshwar Mahadev Temple

Shree Moteshwar Mahadev Temple

Shree Moteshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Shree Muteshwar Mahadev, is an ancient and revered Shiva temple located in Kashipur, in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, India. The temple houses a sacred Shivling and is believed by many scholars and saints to be one of the earliest Jyotirlinga sites, sometimes also associated with the Udar Khand mentioned in the Puranas.

― Shree Moteshwar Mahadev Temple

The name “Moteshwar” is derived from ‘Mota’ (meaning large) and ‘Ishwar’ (meaning Lord)—thus referring to “The Great Lord Shiva.”

Mythological Significance & History

The temple dates back to Vedic times, with strong references found in ancient texts and Skanda Purana.
Kashipur was once known as Govishan, a prominent cultural and religious center in ancient India.
It is believed that Lord Shiva manifested here as a Jyotirlinga and was worshipped by sages, including Rishi Kashyap, after whom the city is named.
The current temple structure was restored and expanded over centuries, with notable contributions from Katyuri and Chand dynasties.
The temple has witnessed centuries of spiritual practice, tantric sadhanas, and Shaiva rituals.

Significance of the Temple

The Shivling here is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested) and is held in high regard by both Shaivite and Tantric traditions.
Devotees believe that offering prayers at this temple fulfills wishes and grants liberation from karmic cycles.
Many saints have meditated here, and the energy of the temple is considered highly sattvic and spiritually powerful.
During Mahashivratri, the temple sees thousands of pilgrims and grand celebrations.
It is considered by some to be among the earliest forms of Jyotirlinga worship before the 12 canonical Jyotirlingas were established.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple reflects classic North Indian (Nagara) style architecture.

Constructed primarily of stone and brick, the sanctum houses the large Shivling set deep into the earth.

The temple complex has other shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Nandi (Shiva’s mount).

The atmosphere is serene, surrounded by sacred trees, including Bilva (Bael) trees, which are considered dear to Lord Shiva.Garuda, and Uddhava., where the Pandavas are said to have meditated.
