Significance of the Temple

Often dubbed the “Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh,” the temple is celebrated for its sensuous erotic sculptures woven into mythological and divine narratives—reflective of strong tantric traditions.
It serves as a significant site for Shiva worship, especially vibrant during Mahashivratri, with profound spiritual value to both local tribal communities (like Gonds and Baigas) and devotees

Architecture of the Temple

Built in a distinctive Gurur / Nagara style, the temple features a saptaratha (seven-projection wall scheme), an ardhamandapa, a mandapa hall, an antarala, and a garbhagriha (sanctum) housing a Shiva Linga

Set on a plinth about 5 feet high, the structure spans 60 × 40 feet, with a soaring shikhara (spire) composed of receding tiers—a design that mirrors the contours of the surrounding Maikal hills.

The temple is richly adorned with sculptural bands of erotic art, divine images (Shiva, Vishnu’s avatars, Ganga/Yamuna), lions, elephants, celestial figures, and tantric motifs—the exterior walls are particularly carved in upward tiers
