― Harsidhhi Temple

The temple is not only a sacred Shakti shrine but also an important cultural landmark of Ujjain.

Mythological Significance & History

Mentioned in the Skanda Purana, where Goddess Chandi (Harsiddhi Mata) destroyed the demons Chand and Prachand.
The temple is strongly associated with King Vikramaditya of Ujjain, who was a great devotee of Harsiddhi Mata. Legends say he offered his own head multiple times in devotion to the Goddess.
The temple structure has ancient origins, dating back to the Gupta period (3rd–6th century CE), and was later renovated during the Maratha era.

Significance of the Temple

It is believed that worshipping Goddess Harsiddhi here removes obstacles, grants success, and fulfills wishes.
The temple is especially important during Navratri, when thousands of oil lamps on the tall lamp-pillars (deepa-stambhas) are lit, creating a divine spectacle.
Devotees seek blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual strength.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple has four entrances, with the main gate facing east.

The most striking feature is the two towering Deepa-Stambhas (lamp-pillars), which are illuminated during festivals.

Inside the sanctum, three deities are worshipped:

  • Goddess Annapurna (Harsiddhi Mata) in the center
  • Goddess Mahalakshmi on one side
  • Goddess Mahakali on the other

The image of the Goddess is smeared with vermillion (sindoor).

The ceiling is decorated with a Sri Yantra, highlighting the temple’s tantric significance
