Thakurbari Temple,

Thakurbari Temple is one of the most prominent and oldest Hindu temples in Gangtok, Sikkim. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it stands as a spiritual landmark for the Hindu community in the region. The word “Thakurbari” means “the house of God,” and the temple serves as a central hub for various Hindu festivals and cultural gatherings in Gangtok.

Kaila Devi ko Chamunda Devi aur Durga ka roop mana jata hai. Har saal lakhon bhakt yahan darshan karne aate hain, khaaskar Chaitra Navratri ke dauran.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was constructed in 1935 on land donated by the then Maharaja of Sikkim. Initially, it was a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva but later expanded into a full-fledged temple complex to accommodate the growing number of devotees. Over the years, it has undergone renovations and now houses various deities from the Hindu pantheon.
The temple is an important part of Gangtok’s cultural and spiritual history, serving as a reminder of the city’s religious harmony.

By Air:

  • By Road: Located in the heart of Gangtok, easily accessible by taxis and local transport.
  • By Air: The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport, around 30 km away. The Bagdogra Airport (about 125 km) is a major option for flights from other Indian cities.
  • By Train: The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal, about 120 km from Gangtok. From there, taxis and buses are available.
